I have used these and they are great,but as you state only on softer mortar like sand and lime. I recently repointed a whole house that although was sand and cement mortar in some places it was as soft as lime,but in others it was as hard as granite. The customer wanted the whole house to look the same,so I had to use an angle grinder with mortar raking disk. It would have taken me a month of Sundays to do it with that setup you used in the video. A skilled person can rake the mortar without ever cutting the bricks,and I have done this for over 30 years so I class myself as skilled at it these days. I hate the dust,but I warn all of the neighbours to shut their windows and get their cars out of the range of the dust. Its a pain having to sweep everyone's properties but the speed allows me to do the job quicker saving the customer money.

The reason you'd remove hard mortar is in my experience because its been wrongly specified for brickwork that is softer than itself. A predominance of cement mortar in place of Lime mortar due to lack of awareness of material function and use.

Hi there, I tried the old one of these some years ago and found that not only did it wear out very quickly and was very slow the worst thing was that it could not cope with the small hard stones found in old rough lime mortar, it kept trying to go round these bits and eat into the soft brick!. I also tried with another type that has a tungsten carbide cutter which was much more durable and effective but the less durable bit holder gave up under the strain!. In the end I had to revert to the old ways on large areas of repointing, by hand!. The chasing for lead flashings I still use the angle grinder with an expensive diamond disc, they last much longer, make one cut at the 'top' of the joint, just along the bottom edge of the brick, and then another straight cut, parallel, at the 'bottom' of the joint, again just along the edge of the brick, make sure that both cuts go the full depth of the blade, never less than 30mm, finally break out the strip of remaining mortar with a two inch bolster and you will have a chase that will receive a 20mm turned edge of the flashing - straight in one go no messing. Another example of the extra time spent in preparation saving effort at the end!. The last trick in that little book is to dress the turned edge of the flashing as tight and true as you can, you should find that you can carry the 1.5 metre section to its place one-handed without it collapsing, if you then fix it with those clever little stainless steel clips the pointing will lock it all in, for god knows how long!. My final point is on dimensions, with all flashings and re-pointing it is very important that the depth of the chase is never less than 1.5 times the width of the joint, so if the gap between the bricks is 10mm the chase must be 15mm, this way no matter what happens with future adhesion the section of mortar cannot roll out of the joint!. I have posted this to you because I very much like your attitude and the way you explain things. Cheers,Richard.
@SkillBuilder
@SkillBuilder 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Richard. I take all your points on board. I have found the tungsten bits to be better than the diamond and cheaper.

I recently repointed my brick house and bought this tool along with a 10mm thick blade. I used two 115mm angle graders , one fitted with the blade and the other fitted with the router tool. This is what I quickly discovered. It would of took me absolutely ages with the router blade on standard mortar. Plus the router style bits really didn’t last very long at all The 10mm disc cutter was 10 x faster and with a little practice I became quite skilled at using it to get the correct depth etc. I only used the router blade to finish of off the perks.Thats my really life experience of using this tool.
