Today I explain how to Grind and Repoint brickwork, Restoring my home back to its natural form. This is what worked for me and how I did the process.

Yes its a huge project and I still have loads to do but I'm Trying to restore my home as well as be a Dad to 3 kids, work full time owning and operating my sandblasting business. Also try to make KZbin videos :)

Some people won't like to follow on as they like to rake out 7/12mm that's fine and all but I believe if your doing a job it wants to be the best it can be why not rake out at 35mm+ 😏 just that builders etc don't like filling so much back in 😬 I wish you luck and only advise I could say is don't rake out too much (area wise stay to small areas) and chip away at it so it's not so much of a big project and wait for spring make life easier for yourself its not a nice job to start with no point Freezeing at the same time 😂👍

I too think the original is lime mortar as someone has commented below, the house being built about 120 years ago, so about 1900, give or take twenty years. I suspect the removal of the render has taken the surface off the bricks, hence the ‘wire cut’ brick appearance rather than smooth. Time will tell if that’s a problem. Ivy is horrible stuff to remove from a wall and it gets into a brick often a little bit. Your lead-work looks fine to me. Sometimes when people use a grinder to cut out old mortar they cut into the brick leaving a wider mortar joint than the original, but the cutting disks are available in differing thickness. The new mortar does want to be in all the way. The jointer pushes it in besides giving a finished look, also it compresses the joint, squeezing the sand grains together where the water was. Mortar, unlike gypsum plaster, does not expand on setting, it shrinks slightly.

I always thort lime was a light colour and somewhat flexible in the areas that oxygen cannot cure. The motor looked like something they pulled out of the ground (with it been a coal village) and it been dark gray and small lumps of black stuff that resembles coal I persumed it was some sort of coal and ash mix with something else I could be wrong though

@@Mobileblaster Colour depends on the sand used. Gritty sand can be dark, see 'river sand' or 'sharp sand' at a modern builders merchant.

I know this is about a year old video, but man what a task to take on by yourself! The repointing looked awesome to me, you are doing great work! Your blasting videos are also great and very satisfying to watch. I help my son build his race cars and do a bit of media blasting of parts, in a cabinet, and its my favorite thing to do! Can’t imagine doing it on your level though! A dirty but satisfying job I would think!

Hi, sterling job. I've been pointing for more years than I care to remember. I now use King Fisher pointing mixed with their pointing solution. And a pointing gun. It's super easy to use and comes in different colours. I mix dark grey and light grey to get somewhere inbetween.

Thanks 😊 I ust to rake out for a job before doing blasting but I could never make enough money putting it back in 😂 we got £3 a meter to rake out and £4 a meter to fill in this is going back some years the boss was charging the council £35 a meter all them years ago he provided scaffolding and tools contract etc so not too bad I suppose 😆

What would you advice if removing the render as left chisel marking in the brickwork spoiling the surface of the bricks. Mainly minor but doesn't look great. Is there anything I can do to improve there appearance before reporting, suggestions would be much appreciated

Thanks mate it's been alot of work and alot of money evey room needed new floors new rewire windows plaster plumbing joinery etc etc basically bought the brick shell and I've had to learn how to fix everything els as I go haha

Yeah it would do a project this size(full house) no problem as for a daily basis job then a more professional bit of kit would be advised after doing quite abit with it it was showing some were but for the money worth every penny 👍

It's not very nice stuff to mess with and it's hard to get hold of good fitting waterproof gloves to keep his hands away from the cement plus he lost interest on the filling in stage 😄

Maybe use a softer brush then it won't drag it will just knock excess off face off brick.

Soft to medium is the sweet spot ive found but timing is the key when striking off taking the shine off the joints isn't a problem when it drys fully this won't be seen but the snotters left over are harder to remove as long as the face of the brick is flat (no chucks of cement) its really easy to remove staining with a week acid and a light jetwash if cement chucks are left on from brushing off with a soft brush the clean up then needs a stronger acid and harder hitting wash this may lead to damage of the joints that's why I prefer to use a slightly harder brush not really worried about the look of the joint so long as it's not pulling it out brush marks will dry and not be very noticeable 👍

Was good to watch - the mixes recommended, are all over the place ! I reckon I'll go 3-1, as got a Norfolk red brick, end terrace to do, in Gt.Yarmouth. Some of the bricks are rotten. Only thing that concerned me with your video, is the area that you racked out !? I was under the impression that you still have to work diamond shapes, especially at 30mm depth. Am I wrong in thinking that ?

Too strong of a mix anything stronger than 4:1 could be too strong for the brick and course the brick to rot rather than the cement not sure how this works but its definitely a thing. 30mm deep isn't a problem to a 102mm brick 👍 just don't leave it raked out but for a few months will be fine. (Look into chariot pointing that's 10/15mm deep and left like that)

Think I might have had the whole house rendered and then painted white.Looks like bond was 5 stretchers to one Flemish header.I did a church which had the manse like that the office draughtsmen called it Morrises madness.Split the money and was glad to walk away. I just had a quote from a so called “repointing specialist” and it states on the quote that existing mortar will be ground out to a depth of 5mm 🤣🤣🤣 i’m not a newbie to building

When I was working for the council they said a minimum of 7mm at its highest point so basically saying they could check any job any place and if it wasn't a minimum of 7mm they would knock the job we set the depth to 12mm if we dug in anymore we wouldn't make any money filling back in. It only really needs 10mm but it's better if it's deeper

We just found the original deeds turns out it was built and 1st sold 1883 😬 I original thort pre 1920s because its before cavity was standard practice

them mortar guns are only good for patio jointing other wise u get half the muck on the wall. use hand board/hawk (where ever ur from) and a pointing bar/small tool to compress the muck in firmly then finish off with what ever finish u want. only saying as it looks like u had a lot of cleaning up to do but otherwise good job on diy mate :)

Yeah I mentioned that in the video years ago this is how I did it for a living but I've lost my speed/skill and tools 😂 the gun is possibly the most DIY friendly as its real easy to learn and gets the job done. Normally you would only rake out 7/12mm so a hawk and jointer would be way more efficient for that. For me to learn the skills needed for the hawk I reckon the gun was the fastest option I don't intend on doing another project like this well a bit more patching around a door when we remodel the kitchen not enough to put the hours needed to master the hawk for what I do now 👌 but yeah hawk and jointer is definitely the way to go if you plan on doing this work full-time

Yeah. This crack is from my own doing and I know it won't move anywhere now as I had to lift 2x RSJ's and the acro prop was stuck so I had to try and lift the brickwork to free the beam and rsj it's all sorted now sat on pad stones 👌

They dont sell grout bags over there?.. it's very hard to watch someone use that hideous contraption , that just barely works. Get a good grout bag and save yourself hours and it's so much easier. We have always used grout bags and trust me , I've filled in thousands of feet of mortar joints.

If your doing large jobs with a decent crew it's worthwhile getting ready mix dripped off but they only deliver 8 gobo tubs at once = half of a cement trucks worth. Using pre mix works out very expensive it comes in 15kg bags and it was £17 a bag last time I looked could be close to £20 a bag now when I can buy 1 cement 25kgs £4 and 4x 25kgs sand for £7.40 I end up with alot more (125kgs) at a lot less for the privilege of using a mixer 👌👍

I've moved 2 rsjs and rectified this on the inside who ever put them in before dint use pad stones and over time the load cracked the bricks they was sat on making the wall shift a tad buts that's been done now 👌👍

Any dryer and the gun wouldn't pump the mortar. Stains isn't a problem from me. It's my profession to remove such 😎👍
