Here is an effective way to remove rust stains from your pool. I would stay away from any kind of rust stone scraping tool, as all they do is scrape the plaster off.
Dry Acid is a very effective method. You must be careful not to let it pile up in one are for a long time. As you can see in the video, I apply it and a few seconds later, brush it off. Brush the stain vigorously with a metal algae brush (6 in is perfect). Reapply the treatment the same day or you can do it over a period of time. Just don't over due it at one time. I did 2 applications in the video and the stain was almost completely removed.
The pool I mentioned at the end with the BB stains, took me a 2 months, where I applied the treatment each week an one spot and then another. Eventually I got all the stains off.
The sock method is effective but a bit slower since the Dry Acid doesn't actually touch the plaster directly. But it as a good way to actually hit the spot, since broadcasting it in the Deep End is hit and miss. A good size stain like the one in the video would take a couple of weeks with the sock method in the Deep End.

The sock acts as a barrier so I don't think you will have to worry about staining. Try a thin nylon sock. In the video I held it over the stain for about 5 minutes and I noticed good results. I think it will also fade more over time. Yes, the chlorine will eat up the ascorbic acid rendering it useless. Let me know if removes the staining.

You would have a more focusssed treatment if you poured your dry powder into a PVC tube right on top of the stain..... Just a suggestion.... I find it works well.

I am planning to film a Fiberglass pool with some a large rust stain using ascorbic acid (Vitamin C soon. I also heard that Citric Acid works well. The Dry Acid I use works well and doesn't mess up the chemistry if the pool water. I should have it filmed and posted in a few weeks. Thanks for the tip - others can benefit from it.

No. it will burn the vinyl. Try using a rust removing product from your local hardware store on a rag and rub it in a small area to test it. It might work on the vinyl liner since it is basically a piece of plastic. The dry acid is too strong.

if you have any vitamin C tablets in your medicine cabinet drop one on the spot and hold it down with the pool pole. You should see some results. If so then you can probably invest in 1 lb of ascorbic acid. If you watch the vitamin c video the chlorine needs to be near zero to be effective. For the tablet it doesnt matter.

Once you get the metal stain off the surface, you need to eliminate the metal from the water with CuLator Metal Eliminator and Stain Preventer so that the stain doesn't return. The acid dissolves the metal into the water, but you need to get those metals out because they don't get caught by the filter. Great video!

Hmm. I would test a small area with the dry acid in a sock first. It would be good if you can go down in the pool and apply it so if it looks like it is bleaching the plaster you can pull it off quickly. It is worth a shot, a slight discoloration vs a rust stain may be the better of two evils. The best way is to drain the pool and acid wash it but for one stain that may be impractical.

I would just try the Ascorbic Acid first. I have seen 1lb bags online for around $25.00. I am a little leery about dropping $80 on a product - is there gold dust mixed in there or what -geez that is expensive stuff.

Thanks for the video. I have a plaster pool with a new rust stain on the wall just below the skimmer. I have tried brushing with a chlorine tab, a stain stick, & a quart of Jacks Blue for stains but it is still there. Will this method work on the sidewall? Thanks.

Want to thank you and let you know the vitamin C tablets work! I went through a huge bottle, crushing a handful in a thin sock & holding it down with my pole until they dissolved. So far it removed the largest stains by 50%, but given the size & amount of stains I have this process will take for ever. So I went to buy ascorbic acid & the pool guy told me "Ultimate Scale & Stain Remover" will work much better. Wondering if you ever tried this stuff because it cost me $80 & now I'm a little leery?

It might. But a Vitamin C tablet may work better.

My pool is layered with diamond brite and has stains scattered around the pool, will this method work on that without taking off the little pebbles and is there a way to put the sequesterent all around the pool?

The only way to to do the complete pool is with Ascorbic Acid or Natural Chemistry Stain Free. You might want to call Natural Chemistry to ask about you pool surface type as they would know for sure if the product is safe for use. Their product is a bit weaker then pure ascorbic acid and I would probably lean towards that product in your case. That is a bit harder. Usually a pool is drained and the plaster around it is dug up and the rebar is cut off. Then a plaster patch is applied.

I was pumping my pool and didn't realize the submersible pump I used had a cast iron base. So as I was pumping for 6 hours it made a rust stain where the footing of the pump was. I have an salt water in ground pebble tec pool. Can I use this acid dry powder on top of stain directly like you did in this video? And you said you used steel brush? Please help.

Thanks! I saw the video after I posted that. I actually tried ascorbic acid but was never told my chlorine level needed to be zero, which explains why it didn't do jack. I will try vitamin C tablets. The rust stains are bigger then a tablet and located at the 10' deep end, so I assume packing them in a sock is best? How long do you usually hold it down with a sock, and can it cause damage if held for too long? Sorry if I'm asking too many questions, I'm just exited to finally remove these stains

I tried citric acid and it didn't do a thing to the rust stains I have (at least for a fiberglass pool). I was told there's nothing I can do to remove the stains (which I don't believe). I'm curious about using Vitamin C and would love to see a video on this. I appreciate all the videos you make... your videos on the polaris 360 have been a tremendous help to me. Thank you.

Sounds a bit like fertilizer pellets to me. You can try turning off your pool and pouring two bottles of HASA Super Stain out directly over the spots. This has yielded me some good results. It may also do nothing. That is just the nature of the stain out products. If it more organic in nature that the tri-chlor tablets will remove it no problem and won't damage the plaster. Could be a mustard type of algae that is very aggressive. Sometimes it doesn't brush off well and looks like a stain.

Vitamin c tablets placed in a pair of womens nylons or something similar and then rubbing on the stain acts like a magic eraser to this. Especially on a vinyl liner where you can't brush very hard. Just check your chemicals after because it will lower your PH a little and eat some of the chlorine, but it shouldn't be anything drastic.

My 3 year old threw a bolt in my fiberglass pool and I didn't notice till it was too late. The polaris moved it around so there's rust stains everywhere in the deep end. I've tried so many ways to remove them, nothing has worked! One method created a huge white spot, didn't remove any rust. Please let me know if there's a way that really works to remove rust? So honestly, should I really try this? Or is it going to be another wasted purchase to add to my massive collection of "stain removals"?

You can use a gas powered pressure washer holding the wond 2 to 3 feet right over the stain . Gone without harmful chemicals. Stay as far away from the pool surface as need use as little pressure as needed then clean the entire pool from the most center point aim at the walls and floor.

Yeah, there's something in there! My PH is off the charts now... way too high! Was perfect prior to adding this stuff and I use the neutral chlorine granules? I'll keep you updated as it said after 2 weeks the stains should be completely removed. Also said because I have a DE filter no sequestering agent is needed afterwards?

If it is a plaster pool the best way to clean that is with a drain and an acid wash.
