You guys offered a lot of other alternatives to remove the residue left behind from stickers. I haven't tried all of these but Isopropyl (Rubbing alcohol) has always been recommended to me for most surfaces and works quickly. Fast acting is important, because it means less rubbing. I've never had any issues using Goo Gone on more sensitive surfaces, but for these types of situations, I would also try using a putty or kneaded eraser to lift up the residue. I haven't tried all your other alternatives, but if they work for you guys, awesome! 👍

I actually prefer the stickers been left on. Just reminds me of how the videos were set up in video shops here in England but that’s me, but only if there not stuck all over the front cover

I found some stuff called "bestine" that stamp collectors use to remove rare stamps. Stuff works great, way safer then rubbing alcohol and not as messy as goo gone. Highly recommended, it might take some patience but it will do the job and wont ruin your stuff (at least in my experience).First attempt is always heat though! Glad this channel is back with regular vids!

Wouldn't mind seeing more of these videos! Not so much for informative purposes, but just to see the before and after restoration. Strangely calming and satisfying.

these glossy slipcases are easy, in my country most of the vhs's are clamshell with a paper like cover. I rub gently a piece of slightly wet cotton directly to the sticker and being extremely careful to not tear the paper cover
@zachary_attackery2 жыл бұрын
There's this stuff you can get called UnDu, it's similar to goo gone but works a little better. You just soak the sticker in it and it will slide right off, it soaks into the paper and disolves the adhesive

Great video. I highly recommend Zippo/Ronsonol lighter fluid instead of Isopropyl alcohol. It cuts the glue residue much better and dries very fast. Goo Gone can be oily and stain some slipcases. I’d advise against it. For tape shells themselves, Goo Gone is okay. Also, I recommend keeping the tape in the slip while removing stickers so it gives the slipcase some rigidity and helps avoid potentially bending or creasing the case. I love that plastic razor scraper though! I need to grab one of those. Keep up the solid content. Cheers!!

What about using Goo Gone on DVD cardboard snapper cases? Would that cause anything to stain on those?
@leatherfacex6662 жыл бұрын
@@austinwillcut4919 I would advise against it. Goo Gone has citrus oil in it which can stain porous surfaces. It doesn’t dry fast like Isopropyl alcohol or lighter fluid. A lot of those cardboard DVD’s weren’t glossy like VHS slip cases were. The gloss helps a lot with resisting stains. Use the heat gun/hair drier method to heat up the sticker and slowly peel it. You can try using some lighter fluid or alcohol to lightly dampen the sticker itself. That will help too. (Use a cotton ball to dab the alcohol/lighter fluid on the sticker)

@@leatherfacex666 Actually, I already have the stickers off. The problem is the sticky residue is still on it, it came from the security stickers that were on it.

Im super glad you mad a video on this topic. Here are a few I have noticed over the years of cleaning off stickers. Goo gone can pull color from Neon Green, Yellow and Pinks. I just a super tiny bit of extra virgin olive oil. A furniture restorer recommended it. Also I use a hollowed out tape shell in the slip when doing sticker removal.

I have an Exorcist 2 clamshell that is just as wrinkly as that Bay of Blood tape. Although I do have The Exorcist clamshell from 1979 and it has no wrinkles at all so ironically that one held up better.

Zippo lighter fluid works much better than rubbing alcohol and it won't damage the paint or stain the box, Goo Gone is oil based and can leave a deep stain, also keeping a tape in the box while your working on removing the stickers would keep the box nice and stiff, if your worried about the heat damaging the tape grab one of the billion crappy/worthless tapes that littler the planet and use one of those.

Pretty cool. Unless the sticker is large and obtrusive to the overall artwork, I usually just leave them for historical value. Especially if they have the original video store name and address included somewhere on it.

Thank you so much for making this, it’s very useful information for every collector. I know someone else who used lighter fluid to remove stickers. Lol. Also, I used to get my protective sleeves from a website, but they never carried ones for clamshells. Where might one go about purchasing some? I’ve also noticed that some companies make these types of protective cases with thinner, flimsier plastic than others do.

Thanks for watching! Check out "Buzz and Bingo's Moon Circus" on eBay. They're not perfect, but pretty damn close, crystal clear, and thicker than the ones I had bought years ago.

The Analog Archivist how do you get ink marker or white out paint off the slipcover/cassette itself? Same with DVD covers (mainly plastic cases), I have a few with someone's initials on the front written with marker.

So green was the original color on the side of Bay of Blood? Why would it turn sky blue even from sun bleaching? I'd figure it would be like a very light green, almost yellowish color.

I used 91% rubbing alcohol on a Star Wars 83’ slip cover… and it left some faded streaks. Under basic lighting they’re invisible but if you inspect it and reflect it under certain lighting, you can see the streaks. Do you know what I can do to remove those?

Nice video! I have a question for you. I have a movie that I recently got and is curious about the date it was made. Its the movie Chinatown Paramount Home Video from 1974. I know they say the first vhs movies were made in 1976. Could this be one of the first vhs movies made. Its says its made 1974 long road productions. Is this a rare tape?
@vhscollector2 жыл бұрын
Probably not. Chinatown is a Paramount title, and Paramount title were first distributed through the photo-development service, Fotomat, in 1979. These videocassettes had no cover art and came in a generic sleeve. The first Hollywood studio to release titles on VHS/BETA was 20th Century Fox through Magnetic Video, starting in October 1977.

@@vhscollector thanks for the info. There is also a betamax copy thats exactly the same but with a different style box. Check ebay someone is selling them claiming they are RARE. That's why I asked, because I have the same 1974 long road production vhs copy.

I leave the stickers on. VHS is not worth anything and the stickers do nothing to the tape. You also remove history by removing the stickers. I collect tapes from specific stores/libraries, and I love having movies on rental for extra nostalgia.
@MontagTheMagician2 жыл бұрын
The answer is YOU DON'T! You don't EVER remove rental stickers. Video rental stores are gone and don't exist anymore and the stickers are a part of the history. I wouldn't pay 50 cents for a mint copy of Last House On Dead End Street with the stickers removed. You say you'd never remove a video store sticker then proceed to remove two video store stickers. I don't get it. This was painful to watch.
