@Zamolxes77 > *imagine you're the 1st to fly* They weren't the first to fly. People had been flying gliders and in motorized balloons for a long time. Heavier-than-air machines are just another form of flying, but not the only legitimate type.

@@BullToTheShit The Wrights had the first patent on lift and control and propulsion. Jumping off a cliff and gliding to the ground is not flying. The first zeppelin flight was only a couple years prior and was not an upgradable technology. Where is it today? You would be insane to fill a baloon with hydrgen and motorize it with all the advancments in aviation over the past 100 years.

When Santos Dumont flew the 14 bis in 1906, the Wright Brothers had already built and flown three different heavier-than-air flying machines: 1) the 1903 Flyer, which took off under its own power and flew 852 feet (260 m) while remaining in the air 59 seconds; 2) the 1904 Flyer which also took off under its own power and was the first heavier-than-air craft to fly in a complete circle as well as covering a distance of 4,080 feet; and 3) the 1905 Flyer which also took off under its own power and flew a distance of twenty-four miles, including several circular maneuvers. On the other hand, Santos Dumont's 14-bis was uncontrollable and was only capable of flying short distances in a straight line.

I'm a Brazilian I would like to say that your account of Santos Dumont and the Wright brothers in the history of aviation... is absolutely right. "Santos Dumont made it first" is a fabricated controversy (in part by Dumont himself), that survives to this day (in Brazil) as a patriotic "anti-imperialist" conspiracy theory they teach at school. Not only Wright Brothers made it first, their Flyer airplanes were the basis of all aircraft built afterwards, they started piloting schools as well, they were businessmen, that's why they had little interest in public exhibitions and competitions, and were actually concerned about competitors trying to plagiarize their invention, that's why there are less records of their first planes flying, but there are enough for anyone seeking the truth. Santos Dumont was, at most, a dedicated hobbyist, and the first Brazilian to make and fly a plane (for what it's worth), who as a rich heir and never had to worry about money. The 14-bis flew only once, just barely, and even his most functional project, the Demoiselle, (first flight in 1908) was pretty irrelevant for the history of aviation.

The replicas that were built proved that they did not FLY. When you look at the sky remember that the real inventor of the plane is called Alberto Santos Dumont
@shawnoconnor3590
@shawnoconnor3590 3 жыл бұрын
To all the Brazilians who think Santos Dumont invented the airplane Another common objection of the Santos Dumont camp is that the Wright brothers used a catapult to launch their airplane. They ignore the fact that the Wright brothers made over 40 flights of varying lengths before they built a catapult, including the four flights on December 17, 1903. They also ignore the records of the flights the Wrights made in 1904 and 1905, which show that the catapult wasn't always used. If the Wrights felt they had sufficient headwinds, they took off without it. The Wrights continued to use the catapult and launching rail long after they needed to because they felt it offered an advantage over wheels. Aircraft with wheels needed a long take-off run; with a rail the Wrights could be off the ground in as little as 60 feet. Additionally, the rail kept the airplane headed in the proper direction until the air was flowing over the control surfaces fast enough to give the pilot adequate control. Ground loops and other accidents were all too common in wheeled aircraft that had to traverse some distance before the controls became effective. In 1905, after the Wrights felt they had worked the bugs out of their invention and had created a practical airplane, they invited the public back again. They sent out about 30 invitations to people whom they thought would make credible witnesses. Several hundred showed up at Huffman Prairie to watch them fly on October 4 and 5 , 1905. On October 5, Wilbur was able to keep the Wright Flyer 3 in the air for 39 minutes, flying 30 complete circuits of the field and covering over 24 miles -- in public. Wilbur Wright experienced this anti-catapult chauvinism in France in 1908 when he set an altitude record and the Federation Aeronautique Internationale denied him the record because he made an "assisted" take-off. To prove to the French that whatever assistance the catapult had provided was beside the point, Wilbur took off unassisted on skids alone and set the record anew. Two years later, the Wrights gave in to market pressures and began to install wheeled undercarriages on their airplanes. But they still used the same engine they had used when they first flew in France. Power wasn't an issue; they could have added wheels earlier. They simply believed that the catapult and rail system was better. Brazilians usually bring up the Wright catapult to imply that the Wright airplanes were somehow less technologically advanced than Santos Dumont's. So it's worth noting that on December 31, 1908, Wilbur Wright made a record-breaking flight where he remained aloft for 2 hours, 18 minutes, and 33 seconds, winning the coveted Coupe de Michelin. During his entire flying career, Santos Dumont never remained airborne in one of his airplanes for more then 15 minutes. Source: www.wright-brothers.org

The Aero Club of America, Aero Club de France, the Federation Aeronautique Internatioinale, Octave Chenault, Ferdinand Ferber, and the French Government all certified the Wrights as having flown in 1903. The December 1905 and January 1906 issues of L'Aerophile documented the Wrights' successful flights at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina and Dayton, Ohio. In point of fact, it was L'Aerophile's reportage of the Wrights that motivated Santos Dumont to cease experimentation with lighter-than-air aircraft and instead concentrate on heavier-than-air aircraft.

All the Wright brothers experiments were able to be GLINDING in the air with the help of external conditions, such as using a catapult, jumping off a cliff or having favorable wind conditions. Besides, they used to do their "flights" alone, or for few people because they thought people could steal their projects or ideas, and as a result of this the only thing we have about them are stories from witnesses. Santos Dumont literally CALLED THE MEDIA, made a big demonstration in Paris and has flown in 14-Bis by the plane's own power, IN FRONT OF EVERYONE without needing external conditions, catapults, favorable winds or jumping off a cliff.

Modern replicas replicas of the 14-bis incorporate modern alloys fabricated with modern technology (i.e. arc welding) and are equipped with modern Rotax aero engines & propellers. Any resemblances between them and the original are purely cosmetic. Furthermore, the primitive "air paddle" installed on the original was only 12% efficient. Combined with the high parasitic drag coefficient of the original and its inadequate (not to say non-existent) controls, the original 14-bis only ever achieved short hops in conditions of complete calm. Moreover, the excess dihedral of the 14-bis only served to increase its instability in even the gentlest cross winds.

The Aero Club de France were well informed about the Wrights beginning in 1900 when Wilbur Wright began corresponding with founding member Octave Chanute. Impressed with the Wrights' progress, Chanute traveled to the United States to visit them at Kitty Hawk in 1901, 1902, and at Dayton, Ohio in 1903. After his 1903 visit, Octave Chanute delivered a lecture to the Aero Club de France in which he described the Wrights' experiments with gliders and their plans to fly a powered aircraft. Present at Octave Chanute's 1903 lecture was a French artillery captain named Ferdinand Ferber who likewise traveled to the United States and visited the Wrights at Huffman Prairie in Dayton, Ohio. After meeting the Wrights, Ferdinand Ferber declared himself a "disciple of Wright" and in 1904 built a copy of a Wright-style glider, describing it as a "type du Wright." Relying on information gained during these and other visits to the Wrights, the December 1905 and January 1906 editions of L'Aerophile (the official journal of the Aero Club de France) confirmed the Wrights' successful flight of a powered heavier-than-air airplane.

I’m sorry guys, but Gustave Whitehead beat the Wright Bros. by 2 years in Bridgeport Connecticut and May have flown as early as 1899. There is evidence beyond a shadow of a doubt. There is a Museum built to his honor in Germany and I have spoken to the family who still live in Connecticut, not to mention the Park Rangers at Kitty Hawk have privately admitted to me that Whitehead beat the Wright Bros.

Did you know there was a steam plane in 1890 something that flew 300 metres in Yorkshire England? Technically the worlds first powered flight was done by an English man, the wright brothers were the first to make a powered flight that flew for more than just a few seconds using petroleum. WWI was one of the first wars to use aeroplanes but in 1910, there was a city bombed by plane.

I would like the author of this video, or the historian, to explain the great fiasco that was the celebrations of the centenary of the flyer in 2003, (among other replicas of 1903 that didn't fly), without using those cliché excuses, always used by defenders of the brothers, the wind, the weather, pressure, etc., as these conditions are for gliders!
