Removing Stuck Oil Filter

Firstly: Its better if you drive the screwdriver through both sides, so that the tip sticks out the opposite side of the filter. That way, the screwdriver has two side to "push" against when you apply pressure. Sometimes, if you put that much torque and it only pushes against one side, it will tear the hole bigger without moving the filter. Secondly, it really is not necessary to fill the oil filter with oil before hand. Some oil filters actually have instructions on their side stating that you should NOT fill it with oil before the time. And lastly, apply a thin layer of oil with your finger on the new filter's rubber gasket before putting it on, this will prevent it from getting this stuck in the first place.

jerks at ezlube made sure my cage needed this trick. you vid helped me remember which Direction it needs to go too! I never use dealers with this, and I live in an apartment, so I end up with ramps and jack stands out somewhere in the middle of nowhere late at night then go in and find the morons who last worked on it tightened the crap out of a cheap garbage filter. car runs so much better with ester and a k&n its unreal.

the 4wd x has a crossbar on the suspension right near the filter that makes getting a strap wrench in there impossible, so this is the only way I could get it out when the po took it to a chopshop for servicing and they fuck it up.

Driving a screwdriver through an oil filter has to be a last resort which may not work. There are better filter removers available.

Why would you need to fill the oil filter with oil ??? Never have i done this in 26 years as a mechanic

I personally don't want the first crank to happen with a dry filter (even though I am sure oil gets in there when you fill the engine with oil). It may not be necessary, but that's how I've always done it

This helps insure that there is as close as a constant oil pressure as possible during initial startup. The only downside to this is that some oil might spill during installation but that's it so I would recommend to always fill the filter with oil. I personally do this every time I change a oil filter.
