Before you comment. I am sure husqvarna problem was just a dull chain. The stihl ended having trouble cutting also. I had to sharpen the stihl twice while removing these stumps. Cutting stumps close to ground, there is no way to completely prevent dirt from dulling the chain.

Agree.. can always look at the sawdust which will give an indication a chain is getting dull plus when it runs it means filling is uneven.. it's a hard task to do without causing a chain issue. Great job though.

Dirt is a chain killer but is inevitable cutting fallen trees and stumps. I like to file the chains when the chips start to get smaller and the dust starts. You talked about your bar wear; you can squeeze the rails back together and "deck" the bar to re-square the rails.

You are so right, anytime I cut stumps off at the ground I always have to sharpen the chainsaw. Absolutely no way to keep the dirt and sometimes rock/gravel from migrating into it.

I flip my bar every time I replace my chain I found that it's better to have serval chains then just change out the chains when they get dull and keep the guilds below the guild tool set it on a new chain use that for your recordomed guild height

One good thing about ash trees are, there is no conversion once it's placed in your stove. All other trees change to ash but an ash tree remains ash once burnt. 😆 Merry Christmas from NL Canada

You can call an Ash tree the only religious tree too ( not the Palm tree ).. because all the other trees convert to it.

When I burned wood we used maple, ash, oak, and cherry. I'm from Pennsylvania so we had some cold weather. We were very warm with maple. All wood needs to cure for 6 months + to be good wood.

It's almost like those trees knew they'd end up as your firewood eventually, and decided to save you some haulage, lol. Been cutting a lot of tree service wood piled on the ground- esp Ash- and you're right, dirt will make very short work of a sharpening job. Even just rolling a log over to finish the cuts will expose it to dirt stuck in the bark, if you don't take the time to knock the bark off. FWIW, Ash itself can be tough on a chain. It's naturally dry, and it tightens up when it sits for any length of time. The result being that it's difficult to keep enough oil on the chain, it heats up, and dulls quickly. Those stumps make great firewood, though. A pain to split, usually, but it's dense, hard wood that burns a long time.

We cleared stump-littered fields by hiring an explosives expert. Boom and a few sticks blew all the dirt below and around the stump. Sometimes the stumps flew up more than fifty feet in the air But for the really big ones, all we did was get a good hot fire (tire) under the stump and by nightfall, the stump was carbon ash. Those days are gone but were quite enjoyable for young kids to watch. I can still remember the sound of the blast. BOOOOM!

Very ynice I was one that voted to remove the stumps first because you can work indoors pretty much year round. You can't do too much outside when the ground is frozen. The tractor can wait till it's too cold for you outside. And it being negative 1 here in Central Kentucky and you living up north of us I know it's got to be colder up where you are. Stay warm stay safe and Merry Christmas to you and Rebecca and your family.

A quick solution to keep the firewood shed from getting full of snow this winter may be a couple mesh tarps across the back and sides.
