Everybody keeps telling me they're "money", but I haven't found anyone whose interested in buying them and I don't know how I'd get them anywhere to be milled.

Not trying to plug another channel but Sawing with Sandy had a video today I think it was, where he had a little laser pointer mounted on the chain saw handle to measure out how long he wanted to cut firewood. Don't know much about it but it looks like a pretty handy idea if it's not too costly. Might want to check it out since you cut a lot of firewood. Those last, fast growing trees are Ash. Kinda crazy how dense and hard the wood is, for how fast they grow. Excellent firewood. Soft maple may not be anything special for heating, but it's ideal for campfire wood! Also works well as a "helper" for species that are hard to ignite, or if you have some wood that isn't as dry as you thought- it burns really hot and bright. Looks good, all cleaned up! And you got a nice pile of firewood as well.

Tree in question is Green Ash, nearly extinct in Northern Ohio, due to invasion of Emerald Ash Borer in late 90's. This was my favorite of firewood to cut, load, split & burn. It burns well, green/seasoned. Your grapple is the modern version of sawbuck. Grapple is more user friendly.

That last tree(s) looks like white ash. For firewood length we measure x inches from the tip of the bar back and mark a vertical line with a sharpie. Just renew the vertical line occasionally as it begins to fade. A quick check with the bar parallel to the log confirms where to cut.
@jimmieusaf-pol58182 жыл бұрын
Hi Evan, just a thought when you get ready to remove the stumps. I have used a sawzall with aggressive pruning blades to cut stumps at ground level or below before, nothing quite as big as your stumps, but might still work if the stumps are cut into pieces, and will keep your chainsaw chain out of the dirt.
@ericsheriff43172 жыл бұрын
I like how the front of the grapple works independently on each side. So when you were picking up the firewood rounds it grabbed more than if it was all one piece.

Evan, you need a smaller saw. I have cut firewood for my own use for 34 yrs and never had a saw that big. Only a few times have I had to borrow a larger saw to cut extremely large trees. My son has helped in those situations. That is what I call a logger's saw. Big enough to handle about anything, but overkill for a lot of things.

As someone who has run a chainsaw for 24 years and has degenerative disc disease (a.k.a. a bad back), I recommend running no less than a 24” bar. That lessens the amount of bending over drastically. That being said, anything that gets the logs off the ground is an obvious advantage. Always love the videos! Keep up the good work and Merry Christmas from Oregon!

Actually the walnut is funny stuff. You cut it and when it's stacked to dry the dark bleeds into the white and turns it all dark. Now that's making lumber, I don't know if it works with firewood. I used to work at a lumber mill years ago. We put all the heart of the tree stacked above the white and it all turns black,
@roscoejones45152 жыл бұрын
You could build a sawbuck in about an hour to cut the limbs and small logs. Saves your back and keeps the chain out of the dirt. Also, an electric chain sharpener is fast and accurate. Do a couple of chains at the end or start of your day and you're good for the rest of the day. Glad to see you wearing all the gear!

An alternate to using the spacer bar is to mark the saw logs with chaulk using your measuring tape. If you cut them at 16", just use the standard framing markings. Mike Morgan does this, but you never see him mark the logs.
