Removing the Gib Key from the Atlantic 4 Flywheel

This is our tutorial on how to use a traditional Gib key removal tool. First, we heat the hub of the flywheel using a propane torch (to about 150F-200F). This softens any old grease that may still be on the key, and causes a little bit of thermal expansion between parts. Next, we grease the back of the removal tool to minimize friction. We accept the friction on the front side of the tool that makes contact with the key. Not doing so may have caused it to slip off the key. A series of hits with the hammer was all it took to walk the key out. You’ll notice the pitch of each hit changing as more of the tool is driven past the key. Once out, you’ll want to inspect the key for any damage. If you need a new key, feel free to file/sand it to spec. Just leave the shaft keyway and the hub groove alone!
Next, spray some Liquid Wrench between the hub and shaft (on both sides of the flywheel) and let sit overnight. You’ll use a wheel/hub puller to safely remove the flywheel (see next video for details).
