Removing the steering wheel from an old tractor, International Cub Lo Boy 154 184 185 and Cadets

On a lawn tractor that uses a bolt, soak spline 20 minutes with penetrating oil. Back center bolt out 2-3 turns. Pull up HARD on steering wheel (use a buddy if necessary) while you whack the bolt with a 20oz hammer. Find an old socket (or similar chunk of metal) to set atop the bolt that sticks above the hub to hammer on. One or two good whacks will do. If you have an air chisel, use a flat spud in place of the hammer. Much more effective and more gentle. For a weekend warrior, this is an insane area to be spending $$ on a tool you will use once for something so simple.

You can also grind the weld off the bottom gear and pull the whole shaft out if you dont want to ruin the decal like on sears suburbans, that dont have a cap covering the bolt. They have a sticker that gets ruined if you pry on it. I have had some that just would not come off without ruining the steering wheel. Thanks for the vid.

Great Video! Auto Zone has the Bearing Splitter Separator #57381 & Push Puller #8099 which work together as one tool to get steering wheel off!!! Whack away does nothing if you've a snap ring on the shaft to keep it stationary. Again, great video!

wish I had seen this video 3 days ago, my brother's Kubota M9000 tractor needs the Steering Wheel removed, he drove it on with a hammer many years ago, without any Anti-Seize on the splines.... we used his 3 prong gear puller and destroyed the Steering Wheel... ( he gets a bit frustrated, and says it DAMN WELL WILL COME OFF... um he needed to back off and rethink this....

Two guys pulling up on the steering wheel while buzzing the shaft with a blunt air chisel spud will usually provide enough vibration to break it loose. Protect the shaft with the original bolt or a nut with a lot of threads engaged. Soak with penetrating oil ahead of time.

@@martymartin2894 There is not any play in the spline even when it is perfectly clean, so it won't rock much. The most important part is breaking the bond, which is corrosion or rust. Pulling straight up HARD is very important if you are going to smack the shaft (protected with the nut!) with a hammer. Read my other post from 9 months ago.

How is that tire at the bottom of your compressor holding up? Any plans for replacing it yet? It was nice that the steering wheel came off so easily. 👍 Gotta love those bearing separators. 😊

That tire and rim is off of a geo metro from the 90s. Seems to be holding up ok, I assume lack of direct sunlight is saving it. LOL

Might be a stupid question, but do you have to use the puller and reverse the process to reinstall the wheel or do you just line it up with the splines and use that main nut and an impact wrench to get it back on?

You do not need to use the puller to put the wheel back on. Just use the nut and a good wrench or ratchet.

That is a 2 jaw puller tool but you can get a bearing separator tool for around $40.00 that is just as good but easier to use in my opinion
