Thankyou for this video. My friend just bought a brand new machine just like this one, amd I only know how to use the newer style machines. This video was very helpful! My buddy is old school and we work on a lot of older vehicles with 15" wheels.

nice tutorial, but you need to keep better control of that lever when operating that thing. It comes popping of the shaft, hitting you in the jaw, believe me - you're definitely gonna put the "hurt" in Frank Hurt Auto. Keep the heel of your hand on it. Humble advice from somebody who knows his way around a coats 4050A.

If I've told you once I've told you a thousand times. USE RUBBER LUBE! lol. If that customers comes back complaining about his tire leaking your fixing it free! Just giving you a hard time dude. Been in the Automotive business for a long time.

I learned on one of those even older than that one..Always put the valve stem toward you closer to the air hose ;)..I lost a tooth on one of those machines..working on a tire too wide for that machine then the tire iron slipped off and whacked me in the mouth cracked a tooth had to have it pulled..

@euonymus1980 Steel is it's only real use. Haha you could use alloy or chrome but your going to scratch the real like hell. The best fits are 13's, 14's, 15's, 16's. You can use it for 17's and 18's but it's best not too. In this video it he obviously is doing it step by step to show people how to use it but if you know what your doing you can change tyres in a flash with the 40 40. Easily one of my favorite changers.

We used atf to seal our rims back in the 70's. Of course everything we did back then is a big no no know days. How did we ever make it out of the era? Lol
@iansanderson11 жыл бұрын
I use a long crowbar with a nylon tip to apply pressure to the tire on 16-17's. You can pivot it off the center of the rim and it does the job with minimal effort.

Not a bad video but you missed a couple of important things. The first thing is when placing the tire ing on the machine, the valve stem should be at the 4 or 5 o'clock position when facing the tire machine other wise you will cause yourself undo headaches when "airing" the tire up. Second is apply lube to tire beed(s) when mounting \ dismounting tire and use "tire beed lube" not soapy water there is a big difference. Another reason not use soapy water is it damages the rim & tire beed (cond)

Good vidio but I dont call that old school I was busting tires by hand and when we got a new coats40-40 I could break and patch a tire quicker by hand then my co worker could with the new machine and yes we did race many times
@colinhepworth79208 жыл бұрын
Why is he using the lever on this side of the tire? I always use it on the other side, 180 degrees from me, that way if the lever comes off the pole it goes away from me but more importantly it is easier to push the tire on to the rim without reaching over the moving lever which could pick up on your cover all, I am sure the experts will disagree with me but I have found it much easier mounting or dismounting tires starting from the far side of the machine.
@superrodder20027 жыл бұрын
Ya,the first thing my boss told me when I started my apprenticeship was to never get to close when dismounting and mounting cause if the bar pops out from between the tire and the rim it can swing around like lighting and break your arm or catch you in the stomach. Either way you will be in a world of hurt. And the coats 40-40 isn't old school,they were still making them a couple of years ago cause I could have bought a new one when I replaced my machines several years ago.

In the time It took him to try and use that machine I would have had 4 tyres stripped and fitted he was doing it all wrong the coat's 40/40 has to be one of the most fastest and easiest machines to use it should take no longer than 10 seconds at the most to remove the tyre and maybe 15 seconds to put a new one on

Little soap on that can help prevent rubber tearing on those tough tires. I lube up both sides of the tire good before mounting them on. Much easier. Some tires are tough due to the way the rim is made. soap goes a long way.

This is the machine i learned on. Just mounted a set of tires on my BMW using the plastic alloy wheel protectors on it. Luckily, they are only 16". Trickiest part is mounting the final bead on. It's really important to make sure the tire sits in the inner recessed part of the rim or, as the video mentions, it may rip the tire or get stuck.

These machines are GREAT! I have two of them at my shop. They are very easy to use, well built, and quick. Unlike these newer tire machines. Although, I do have to say, this guy made it look a little harder than what it is to put the tire back on. Try this, it might help you out on this machine. Have the Valve stem to the lower left side. When setting the outside of the tire onto the rim. Make a fist, and apply most of your body wait to the part next to the stem.

We finally retired our old 40-40 a couple years ago. The new generation tire techs hated using it for some reason, plus with everything having 18-20 inch wheels and tire pressure sensors made it not worth the real estate it took up in the shop. I really miss it.
@garyv64422 жыл бұрын
I've used a coats 40-40 for 20+ years never had any trouble with anything under 17inch even with wheel sensors .. just gotta know how to make the bead slide over without catching the tpms sensor. Easiest way to achieve that is always set the vstem closest to you and you will never touch the tmps

aye...this isn't old School...the old school way is by hand.

The machine has optional alloy wheel protectors for both sides of the arm. If you are careful, it won't scratch an alloy or chrome rim at all.

Good tutorial, something to consider ... when demounting or mounting you should always start at the valve and finish at the valve, otherwise the tyre has to ride over the tubeless valve base to drop down into the well. Less of an issue with a tubeless tyre but consider the valve stem on a tube getting in the way ... many have been torn off.
@stevecharette44213 жыл бұрын
Yeah try that with tpms valves and you'll be replacing them every time.
@michaelraymount41083 жыл бұрын
@@stevecharette4421 ... say what? That is the ONLY technique to avoiding contact with any type of valve including the tyre pressure monitoring type. 14 years experience in the tyre industry fitting 4 inch tyres to the largest earthmoving types, years working in the retreading field both hot and cold process's and years working as a retail store manager teaching young blokes like you how to fit tyres. What are your credentials? :)
@stevecharette44212 жыл бұрын
Almost 30 years here for every type of tire on every type of rim or wheel. 4 different shops. You do it the way he is showing and you will pull the tpms off. And you not knowing the reason why shows your lack of actual experience.
@stevecharette44212 жыл бұрын
Even though you have vast knowledge in the tire business, I'll clue some not so experienced tire people on on these old coat coffin tire changers. The side of the spoon that puts the tire back on the wheel has sort of a 'J' hook to it. Just enough so that it will catch the tpms with the bead of the tire as you stretch it onto the wheel. There is no way to clock the wheel on the old coats so you wouldn't pull it off. The coats will destroy mag/alloy wheels. The force they put on the lip of the wheel is ALOT. No plastic protector is saving the finish.

I dont need to explain properly positioning a tire for break down or reinstall on far more modern or conventional tire machines. There are alot of good vids of this being done by far more "qualerfied" folks than any explanation can show.

boy brings me back you do a couple old hard tires and you know to watch that bar when it slows down its either goin to get stuck n stop or go from barley moving to lightning fast n your hand ect.. better not be in the way and have fun with those low profile 35 rubber ban tires

Lastly make sure to keep the "nut" on the turning post tight when mounting or dismounting a tire but loosen it slightly when airing up the tire or else the tire may "jump" off the machine and or get stuck on the machine. Also while it can be done I do not recommend using this machine on the 1960's 1970's Eldorado, Toronado, and Riviera . Lastly only use a machine is in good order, and let the machine do the work for you not you work the machine.

When I was working with them, we never used the protectors simply because we didn't have any and we had a hydraulic machine especially for alloys and chromes. So no point in using those types of wheels on the 40 40
