Sounds like you are just filling in your own version of a silent protagonist, because from what I see - the anime is basically same thing that he says in the game + some extra bits (which is what they did with P4A too). It can't be less personality, quite the opposite, if not only the personality you are talking about is your own headcanon.

The English dub changed this by making his voice more emotive, recontexturelize him as a rather awkward and dorky person. I was wondering if the same case happened with Yu. If that's true, I can understand in Yu's case, it was intentional and part of his character arc.

@@MinhLe19303 Whether it's Japanese or English voiceover, I don't see much difference in how they conveyed his emotions. Yu is still stoic for the most part, even though in the beginning it is indeed seems like he is uncomfortable. Then he becomes bolder in his actions and words ( he is not called a chad for nothing), still maintaining that stoic persona (except for some moments, of course).
