It'a funny, this is the second song of his I heard after Hi Ren about six months back. It just hit me wrong (without any hiphop baggage and having heard anything else of his? Cmon, it'a a bit of a strange performance) and I almost stopped right there. But something inside made me go "nah, let's give this guy a second chance". Sooo glad I did, became a die-hard Renegade since, and I absolutely love this performance. His breath work absolutely shines

I’m not mad at you for checking out the live version. I know it must have been very tempting 😅 And I think a lot of people prefer it. But I do think that with this and a lot of his other songs, it’s a good idea to check out the studio version/official MV first, because you appreciate what he does live even more when you know what it is he took and reinvented. At least it’s the case for Genesis, Animal Flow, Murderer, and Blind Eyed. Also you mentioned Suicide… I recommend doing a few of his songs in order of release (though maybe not in one sitting cause they’re tough): Freckled Angels -> Suicide -> For Joe. It gives you the context to make the experience of the last performance so much more meaningful. Anyway I highly recommend checking out one of my personal favourites for yet another side of Ren: Crutch feat. Bibi. It’s an older song from before he finally got diagnosed correctly and was written after a breakdown following multiple emergency trips to the hospital. It is heart wrenching and absolutely stunning. Ren is special 🐰🕳️

Great reaction, as usual. Honestly, I have yet to listen to anything Ren does, whether it be alone, with The Big Push or collaborations with others, that isn't great. Definitely also do the studio version of this. It's got a totally different vibe. You need to react to "Humble," one of his collaborations with Eden Nash. He always seems to find the perfect singing partners, and perfect songs, to perfectly complement each other (too many perfects there, but I've run out of ways to describe Ren and his music).

That line “Genesis pain in the art” has had me thinking a lot about its possible meanings! It could be referring to how in the book of Genesis, God punishes Eve by making childbirth painful, and every woman would pay for Eve’s sin by suffering pain in childbirth too - like, ‘pain in the art of giving birth’. Or…is Ren paying tribute to the late counter-culture musician & performance artist Genesis P-Orridge who certainly incorporated pain in their art, quite literally too? Or the abstract expressionist artist Genesis Tramaine whose confrontational paintings are religiously themed? Or the anime character Naruto fighting Pain? Literally Pain in art? Ren does reference Naruto in other songs… Or something to do with the actual band Genesis? Or all? Or none? Who knows? Ren knows. 😵‍💫😅

My oldest daughter is Ren's age and I feel so maternal towards him, I want to protect him and give him a hug. That has never happened before except for my own kids. I had an aversion to rap, until Ren. I found it monotonous. His animation in performance, live or studio/video just makes me want to hear it.
