Wonderful theory but Gerard misses the fact that animals, not only primates, practise reciprocity too. Its in our hard wiring and many animals hard wiring behaviour too. Evolutionary ghost in all our genes.

animal reciprocity is not of the same character as human. the ghost of conscience does not visit animals, as animals do not contradict their nature, while we have the choice to act in our best interest or go against it. Girard is a human speaking to other humans, as I am to you. implicit then is the understanding that you are more than an animal, for only you, and humanity in general, is capable of concretely negating the "evolutionary ghost in our genes" through the act of sacrificial love.
