Ren famously studied many past masters, so this is a lot of Smokey Robinson who's vocals are close to Ren. The unmistakable Motown influence on the piece compliments it so well. We get a great sample of Stings classic, message. I'm also impressed with his willingness to shine on those girls for face time.
@mikemedrano85799 ай бұрын
Yup. I was just going to say that the 74 section had mad Smokey Robinson vibes. Ren can do just about anything, it seems, and exceptionally well.

I love your comment about true attentiveness from Ren. I am a people watcher, very sensitive to micro-expressions in human faces (actually animals too, which is why cats will always become my bestie, I understand them because I understand their tiniest moves and respond with respect). This has its downside by the way, in my marriage for example. The poor lady can't have a moment of privacy or confusion without me seeing it, though I have worked on not responding to it. Anyway, everyone can see Ren is very expressive in his facial expressions, but in this video, he is both leading and following. He used his eyes to urge the bassist during their dueling solos. He intently watches the lady singers when they are leading and he is matching them. He once signals to the camera person, I believe, that a switch is coming. He has some moments where his eyes are gentle, slow blink style to project relaxation. What I am saying is for all of his musical gifts he has a natural charisma that makes him a leader. Not an aggressive, boss style leader, rather, he is a Robert Greenleaf style leader, a servant leader. He serves others when he leads, strives to meet their needs and help them actualize. That is why his collaborations are absolutely top notch. And my guess is he honed his musical leadership during all of those years busking. He had to attend to the other members, and if solo (and in group), attend to the crowd. A literal random group of people. But he is sensitive to human expression, that is plain to see.

Part of what makes this video fascinating is REN’s shifting balance, like a dance really, between the times when you can see him focusing intensely on his own vocals, and the times when he’s watching the ladies so closely, to make sure that the timing and vocal blending is immaculate. And I haven’t seen the camera work mentioned enough in discussions of this video. Sam accomplishes the same kind of thing visually, with almost flawlessly accurate focus choices as it lingers on the different performers, even when it necessitates utilizing some creative angles.
@LuluThinking9 ай бұрын
Ren literally embodies music. It is in every cell of him.
@CabinFever529 ай бұрын
Yes, you can see just that in his early busking with Sam.
@ClearTheRubble79 ай бұрын
Yes! You see that in The Big Push busking sessions. I noticed that each rendition of the same song or mashup (like I Shot the Sheriff) has a different sound, feel, tempo or arrangement. A big reason for that, I think, is because Ren is a natural conductor who likes to switch things up and almost "plays the band" like an instrument. All musicians' eyes are on him most of the time. In Money Game 3, when he's sitting before the string quartet, he not only counts out the tempo with his fingers or the waving of the gun, but his continued hand and head gestures (like reaching into the cookie jar repeatedly) set the tempo for the quartet to follow--exactly like a conductor. Cool to watch!

That mix of his head voice----I first thought of it as a mix of Portugal. The Man and Sting. I also thought he brought out a lot of the same sounds of Sting at the end of Hi Ren! However, I had been listening to a lot of Portugal. The Man earlier in the day before listening to this and was stunned at the similarities. I love all three singers, but Ren has a knack for making his voice adapt to the sound he wants, like Bob Marley on his cover of I Shot the Sheriff. He has so much breath control and just plain control over his voice.
@patcow99999 ай бұрын
Thank you Chris, super breakdown and yes, Ren is very playful with this. I love how he hints at the Police song to come, gently offering up the MIAB riff during the Jungle piece. Did you notice the switch of mics, I presume they had different set ups for the singing and rap so allowing a seamless transition. The backing singers make this extra special and could the bassist look any cooler?
@samanthazwickel9 ай бұрын

After many listens to this I was looking for your react and it makes me more focused on the vocal technicalities. One thing that I did not notice until today was towards the end of "Message," that backup singers are switching up the "Let it go" lines. The first time it is more of a "forte" "Let it go," then they switch to more of a mezza-piano "Let it go" with the soprano voice staying up there, but the second voice dropping while they both go breathier. They alternate this. Ah, the details you make me listen to!
