It's astonishing he picked a perfect song 'breaking down' business economics to all the money people behind the industry. And they all sat in rapt attention listening. He really must have made a good, challenging first impression to a lot of that audience. :D I laughed my socks off!

It's so difficult to perform a piece like this in front of an audience like that. I can't see what he is seeing from the stage, looking down at the audience but, I get the feeling that they weren't really giving him much indication of their feelings. Live performances are usually an energy transfer. The artist puts energy out and receives energy from the audience in return, to keep it flowing. I can't tell how they were really receiving what he was saying. Make no mistake, it was ballsy to do this song on a televised awards show. Any nerves he was feeling are more than justified. He put some boom on that MF line for a reason. You can bleep it for TV but, everyone knows what he said. So proud of him for choosing this song for this moment. What a way to announce yourself to an entire nation! Ren saw an opportunity to spread a message and he grabbed that thing with both hands. He could have chosen any number of songs that he's written about himself or his struggles. He chose the one that wasn't about him at all. It was about all of us. I hope people pick up on that. He didn't use this moment to glorify himself or even sell his latest record. He chose an older song with a profound message and facts of our lives that need to be more openly discussed. Such a God tier boss move. If you watch the videos of the broadcast, the host was kinda bitchy in the intro and he looked fairly stunned after the performance before the video cuts. 🤣🤣🤣

Think he was pretty nervous - first time performing on tv. ❤ He did so well, and I love that Romain was there with him and got to watch Slash live on stage too! MG2 fit the theme of the awards which was very anti-establishment (ironically!) and political about the cuts to arts funding.

Spot on @MissMeKate. Whilst his audience did include a lot of the arts industry bigwigs (who might have felt that Ren was holding up the mirror to them), his performance also fell into the anti-establishment feel of the night, and the upholding of grass-roots artistic performance.

I watched the live show up to Ren, went to bed a wrung out mess, id been so nervous for him and so happy at his performance. I think the audience were stunned into silence, they had mostly talked during some othere performances.

He chose to do this raw, could easily hide behind doing it over the backing track. But deliberately slowing it down stripping it back, even simplifying the chorus so he can put more energy into the verses and deliver it with this more aggressive personal tone. Excellent choices all around and shakes off the little mistake like a pro.

IMHO, I get the feeling that Ren was 'asked' to specifically perform this song as it fitted into the narrative for the rest of the evening at the awards, (the cutting of funding from the arts in the UK by numerous governmental bodies was mentioned frequently throughout the show). I don't think he would just 'choose' that song without the producers knowing full well that it contained F Bombs etc as it was broadcast in the UK during primetime TV. The 'Elites in the audience' that some commenters refer to, (as if they are all rich and powerful so don't care about art, in all it's forms), are actually some of the very people who champion the arts and are just as dismayed about the lack of funding and the corruption in governments as Ren is!! Sir Lenny Henry, Melvyn Bragg and many others in the audience at the awards ceremony regularly lobby the government in the UK for more funding for the arts. They aren’t just an ‘elite’ who paid a lot of money to be at the ceremony. They actually care and will have understood, loud and clear, what Ren and Money Game represented.

Top picks for live songs - agree with Murderer and Univited, so to pick another, very hard to choose, I think maybe Animal Flow, simply because I love the beat and the vibe. But it's 1 of so many, I just want to sit and watch him for 3 hours and have him deliver us banger after banger none stop. (I'm not asking too much, am I?). I was watching a live stream of this from another reactor in the UK and not too long before Ren finally came on (he was the second to the last performer - Justin Hawkins (The Darkness) came on after Ren) they had on some goofy cat opera song with all these women singing "meow" in operatic voices. OMG it was atrocious! The chat was filled with WTF's???? and it went on for what seemed forever. In reality it was probably 4 or 5 minutes of meow's. Utterly too long, LOL! I'm sure the reason they had Ren and Justin Hawkins on at the end is they knew they'd have the fans tuning in to see both of them. It was a looong show, too. I think it was around 11:00 p.m. my time (MST) when it ended.
