Ren said about half of his Freckled Angels CD was recorded when he was signed to Sony. When he became so sick he couldn't continue, the work stopped. He was able to get these tracks, and make more songs from his bedroom that he released 7 years ago. Judging by the production of the drums on this song, I'd guess that this is one of those songs from 11 or 12 years ago. His voice also sounds very young. It breaks my heart to think of what he went through.He was on the verge of having his dreams come true, only to have it taken away in a most terrible way. The way his fans have supported him in this second chance is very inspiring.

Ren's biggest musical influence/idol is John Fruschiante, the guitarist from Red Hot Chili Peppers and this sounds EXACTLY like a RHCP song. I love when his influences bleed through into his music.

This album is the unfinished work from when he was signed and became so ill. Can you imagine if this music that feels so new now, had came out in 2016 or before? With a label backing him and promoting him? It's just so devastating. Just makes me want more for him to be successful and have so much more respect for him. Go Ren! This was one of the songs he did with SONY before they had a mutual parting of ways because of Ren's sickness. He said they were recording when he got sick and he was breaking down on stage getting worse. They told him to take some time off to get better and figure out what's wrong. He moved home to his mom's and didn't leave the house for almost a year. After the stem cell treatment he had he hit up the guy he was working with and asked if he could use the songs they already recorded and the producer said go for it. Which is rare! Ren added songs too it like Freckled Angel and a few others. He didn't think he'd make it to 30 years old and he wanted something his friends could listen to and remember him by.

I caught the Alien Ant Farm reference. When you said it, I thought, he's similar, sometimes, to other artists, but that is every artist you hear. We all draw from something. We, intentional or not, can replicate those before us, because of the vast differences in experiences, and the minimal amounts of notes and words available to us. The appreciation comes from somebody who is willing to repeat what we've already heard in a new and compelling way. Ren has this gift. He's also talking about taboo subjects. The things we don't want to hear, but need to. That said, when he wants to have fun with it, he can. I use his music in my ESL classes , because if you can attach emotion and creativity to learning, we all learn faster, and we care about our learning. As always, great reaction and understanding!
