Hi Joel. Very helpful video. However i would like to know, how does the mac sequence the files? How does it know which becomes Chicago 1, which photo becomes the ‘2’, the ‘3’ and so on.... Does it depend on your file sorting selection? Date created?

Thanks for watching @Syafiqah Bisnu! Honestly I have no idea. For me it seems to work based off the current order of what I select, but when I try it several different times in a row I switch between the "add counter" and "add index" and that seems to help rename correctly. There's a popular app called "Renamer" that is probably far more robust than the feature in Finder, especially if you're renaming a ton of files! setapp.com/apps/renamer

Hi Joel, thanks for your great videos...I am learning a bunch from your channel. I have over 20 years of personal photos on an external drive in a mess of folders that I want to import in the Apple Photos app that I haven’t use up to this Day on my Mac ...Question: 1) should I batch rename all of them before importing? What is the main benefit of doing all this work? 2) Once these pictures are imported, I plan on turning on iCloud Photos Library so all the Photos currently on my iPhone and the ones just imported onto my Mac merge together...how to go about renaming the pictures taken with my iPhone before they upload to the iCloud Photo Library? Thanks

Hi @TheMr20100! I'm so happy to hear the videos are helpful! I appreciate you watching as well as the continued support! To answer you questions: 1. I really wish Apple brought back the option to batch rename files within Apple Photos. You can select a bunch of pictures and rename the title of the file, but then they all get the same title, so for me I don't do it. The benefit to renaming in the Finder is the ability to have a sequential prefix or suffix number to append to a file, however to do this with all pictures it could take forever. The biggest thing it would give you the ability to do a search based off of the title of the photos. Instead of doing this, I would utilize keywords, places and people in Apple Photos. You have ask yourself the question, "What photo am I looking for, and what best attribute will help me find it"? With photos having the ability to organize and find photos based off location, people, date and keywords, it makes it pretty easy to find pictures you're looking for. I would focus the time on that instead of renaming the files. 2. It sounds like a good plan to use iCloud Photos and merge together. Same answer applies as above. First off you can't even rename a photo on the iPhone or iPad. You can add a caption, but that's about it. So once those photos start to sync, you can categorize and organize using all of the other tools Apple Photos offers rather than just the title of the file. I hope this helps! Let me know how it goes!

@@Learnwithjoel Thank you! Would you first activate iCloud Photos Library on the iPhone and the Mac and then import all the photos from the external drive to the Mac Photos app or the other way around?

My photos are on iCloud and when I click on Finder and go to my photo library it doesn't show the folders or the individual photos, it just takes me to my photo library. I don't see a way to rename the photos in the photo library - can it only be done in Finder?

Yeah..so a while back if my memory serves me correctly you could batch rename files in Photos with sequential numbering, but that's not the case anymore. If you're looking to batch rename multiple photos with a numbering system like; photo-01, photo-02, photo-03, Apple Photos doesn't seem to do this anymore. Hopefully they do in a future update. What you can do is name multiple photos with the same "title". Select multiple photos at once and then open the "Inspector" (either by doing keyboard shortcut of "command + i" or go to Window > Info) and then changing the "Title" of the photo. This will change the title for all photos selected.
