Grande immensa Tebaldi.

Finally, somebody else says it! I've tried to figure her out for 30 years. I always heard something which made me try again. And, yet, clearly, for me, most of the time it sounds as if she really did not know how to sing; as if she had this INCREDIBLE instrument and no technique upon which she could rely in "bad weather". I have listened and listened and listened. I know vocal technique and science. I can prove that I do. Her breath management is horrible, sort of spur of the moment, whatever happens, and I suspect she is going the dreadful "vaginal" breathing!!! Bahahahahahaa! What were they thinking? One can actually see that in her stance. Although, I treasure that she stood and sang! None of the insanity of today. She SANG! There is usually great tension in her upper body, a squeezing. Now, when she studied teachers were still doing the "my method" stuff; they didn't know a hell of a lot themselves. The science which made voices more reliable came in the late 50s and 60s. I have literally thrown things across a room BECAUSE I LOVE HER SOUND, and yet PITCH! OMG! The squawks! Yet, such glorious phrasing you never hear today. Yes, this may be the best I have heard her, but the range here is not terribly demanding; it seems to suit her. How anyone could hear Tebaldi use that stunning sound and still like CALLAS I will never understand. You probably love Callas. I'm not sure she even had a voice lesson!!! But, I do love Tebaldi. I would love to have had some hours with her in the studio. I realize how this sounds, but at my age I don't care. :))
