I have been a professional theater director for more than 30 years. And as to the wild variance of opinions about any given experience of any given form of theater, there is one thing I can state with absolute assuredness: “You had to be there.” Judging overall experiential legitimacy on the basis of a short audio extract from a unashamedly melodramatic opera is ludicrous. The trajectory of “Tosca” takes us to perhaps the most incredible climax of any work of theater that I know. The descriptive “incredible”, as opposed to “non-credible”, is where debate abounds. Only if one fearlessly immerses oneself in every dimension of “Tosca” is it possible to even guess what one’s experience of the climax might ultimately be. Those dimensions comprise music, words, singing, acting, and visual design, along with inherent characteristics of each performer as well as the manner and truthfulness of their unique interactions with each other. The effect, in opera more-so than any other theatrical form, results in both a cumulative and amalgamative experience that at once strains credulity while concurrently taking us places we’ve never been before… and perhaps didn’t know existed.

When I first saw, "Tosca," in was completely unaware of the plot. At that ultimate scene, I felt that it was actually happening and I was fucking horrified! This performance with the scream is the only one that reproduces my initial reaction of ultimate horror. I've watched it literally 100s of times.

I know it’s over the top but I actually enjoyed it. It terrified me yet she did everything else right so it was an addition versus compensation. So much of the last 50 seconds are rewritten and have different versions in the Mario Mario presto part that it was exciting to hear the parlando expressions. The scream was dark but it still worked. Tebaldi sounded glorious in one of her best roles.
