Hell I always saw these cars as AMCs answer to the k car. I didn't think they was that bad.

Loved them. Slow but fun even as a DL 1.4 with 3 speed auto.

French plastics weren't the best in the 1980s. They became brittle after a few years and certainly didn't like the sun. But then again, that was the blight of most car manufacturers in the late 1970s to early 1990s. US build quality was marginal at best. Overall, the R9 and R11 (the car the Alliance was based upon) were pretty decent little jiggers and most people should get a good run with it.

We had them here in Canada - wouldn't start in the cold, broke down almost as fast as you could parts in it, and rusted out in 3 years. Renault "appliance"

I almost bought one brand new in 83. I thought better and bought a Cavalier Type 10.

My mom was in the same position in 1986 and ended up with a Plymouth Horizon that I learned to drive on.
