You are worth your weight in gold. My Kangoo had this fault, which was the only reason it failed the MOT. I took it to a local garage who told me that a fault on the vans engine management system meant their diagnostic equipment would not talk to the vehicles system which meant my next step was the dealers & a whole bunch of money & stress. So I decided to check out Y.T. & found your video, as soon as I wiggled the connection you indicate the fault disappeared. I can't thank you enough. :)

Thanks a mil for this helpful video. My lights came on about 3 weeks ago and have been doing their on/off thing ever since. My 2006 Mk2 Clio was having its 2 yearly Irish NCT test on Friday and the guy failed it on this point. I asked him why he failed it when there was no passenger seat airbag fitted. He couldn't answer. Of course he couldn't, he wasn't a mechanic, just a poxy test jockey. Being a mechanic of 25 years I gave a good account of myself before leaving the centre. On Saturday morning I reached under the passenger seat and jiggled the loom. Bingo, the lights haven't surfaced since. I returned today (Monday) and had my visual retest done in 2 minutes, got my cert and if the lights come back on they can fuck themselves for another 2 years. Once again, many thanks.
@peugeotCitroen2CV10 жыл бұрын
Great to hear you got through the test, i did not know the NCT was every other year. As for the light coming on even if there is no airbag mounted in the passenger seat, the pretensioner for the passenger seatbelt is found on all models of clio and the wires can get loose for it, they all run through the same system as the airbags with the pretensioners detonating around the same time.

Yeah the NCT is every 2 years from 4 years old to 10 years old. Then it's every year.

@@Mixbag Has it stopped as a direct result of the work done on the driver's side, or phrased another way has the fault with the passenger side window only presented itself following the completion of the work on the driver's side door? Although its possible that something may have been disturbed on the connector to stop the passenger side window from working. Hi, Thankyou for the video. My renault clio had the same problem. The car was rejected in the vehicle inspection due to it. Basically it was due to the loose wires under the driver seat so when I pushed the wire inside that white plastic socket, the air bag light went off. Do you know if this is enough to pass the inspection or the symbol needs to be removed by the machine which is used to check the electrical system (the ones which they use in inspection centers) of the car?

Conductive yep, but thats good because when the connection is rusty or dirty it isnt conductive, the wd40 restores that conductivity, you could blow it away with an airline if your worried about the pins shorting through the wd40, nonethless thanks for the comment, and good luck with the soldering

The purpose of the plug is to connect the wires for the pretensioner and seat airbag up with the airbag wiring loom in the car, because of how cars are made plugs are used because this is the quickest way on the assembly line to make the connection. The plug does nothing more than connect a series of wires together, so it can be removed and replaced with soldered connections if it is giving trouble. The soldered connection (if soldered well) is much more reliable than the plugs.

By the way you described it your car has a few plugs under the seat, do you have side airbags in the seat? They can also break when the car has had the steering rack disconnected if the joint isnt put back on straight the wheel can be slightly off to one side so turning it on full lock can snap the clock spring.

If soldering the wires for the pretensioner doesnt solve it, then yes try the black plug aswell. Although i normally find the grey plug to give trouble first, the black one has cable ties on either side to hold the wires tight to the plug, the grey one does not and therefore the wires can get loose easier.

Its best to check renault forums first to see if this can be done

The airbag light comes on for a variety of reasons and in the video i only look at one reason, although i find it to be the most common reason. The grey and black plugs are separate, grey is for the seatbelt pretensioner, black is for the seat airbag in the video i cut the wires going into the grey plug on the passenger seat and soldered each pair of wires together @1:16 you can see me cutting the wires; the pink wire is connected to the brown. and the orange wire is connected to the blue.

The drinks holder bit pops out of place, i never cut it out. If you then see the airbag ecu covered in any spilt drink, then you can take the rest of the trim surrounding the area out of the way, which is also held in place with a few clips, and having the drinks holder out of the way makes it easier to get the centre console out.

The impact sensor on the car, have you changed it? There would be a front impact sensor somewhere in the front bumper and one in the B pillar near where the seatbelt reel is If they haven't been replaced then they are still sending crash data to the ecu, a diagnostics machine will say exactly what sensor is detecting an impact
@peugeotCitroen2CV11 жыл бұрын
The impact sensors once they sense an impact they need to be changed, my cousin tried to get second hand sensors from the scrap yard but none worked new ones for the dealer were the only solution unfortunately. Did you replace the ecu with a new or used one, its possible the donor car has crash data in it, but you can send the ecu away to have its crash data erased some companies do that service, although if you can find one in a scrapyard car that hasnt been hit its usually cheaper.

Hi Peugeot. Thanks for the video. My car has got airbag light on constantly and failed MOT test recently. In my case, my car is a bit diff. to your demonstration one. It has the seat airbag, that means the red plug has its own use. That leads me to two questions: (1) Not sure which plug (red for seat airbag, and grey for seatbelt pretensioner) has caused the light on. (2) In your case, you cut and soldered the parallel wires. But does it mean the pretensioner would fail in case of car crash?

The diagnostic equipment helps to identify which plug is causing the fault, but in most cases if I'm fixing an airbag light for someone i just do both plugs under the passenger and drivers seat without using the diagnostic stuff. It takes a bit more time doing them all, but after it you can rule out a bad connection. When i cut and soldered the parallel wires i just made the wires connect again (the plugs go faulty and stop the wires from connecting right), thus in a crash it should work
@peugeotCitroen2CV11 жыл бұрын
Not many people have these i accept that, however it is possible to fix the airbag light without the fault code reader. the wires under the seat or ecu if fixed as shown in the video will get rid of the light, i just show the computer screenshots to show what is going on. In them cases you can get rid of the light without the computer. But if they don't fix it, its probably cheaper getting it hooked up to the diagnostics machine to find out whats wrong. I only got the lend of this machine.

It depends on the fault code reader, a proper renault clip reader or a cloned one off ebay can read the airbag module, as can high end diagnostics machines, cheaper diagnostics machines cant communicate with the clios airbag system. Nonetheless check the wires under the seat, if that doesnt work try somewhere with a high end fault code reader that can read airbag ecu's and see what it says. There will definitely be a fault code if its putting the light on.

There is a clamp that holds the battery in place, on the clio its just a bit of cast aluminium shaped so it grabs the lower edge of the battery, and is held in place with a bolt. You could get one out of a car in a scrapyard. Or alternatively try a DIY approach, get two threaded bars, bend one end so they catch on something below where the battery sits, put them on either side of the battery and get a flat bit of metal to bolt onto the two bars holding the battery down.

The probelm with putting another ECU into the car is that the impact sensor that detected the crash if it hasnt been replaced will still be on even with another ecu, i would plug the car into a diagnostic machine first to find out what impact sensor has been triggered, then replace the sensor, and whatever airbag has went. With the parts changed see if the airbag light goes out, if it doesn't then use the diagnostic machine to clear the crash data.

Hi I cut and joined the wires under the passanger seat and the light didn't go of, I seen the same connector under the drivers seat, could that one give the same problem ?

It was a car a friend gave me for doing some work on another car, this car had sat outside his house for a year, and i cleaned most of the rubbish out, but there still was a lot of mould and debris left. The smell was awful. The car was only good for spare parts. My car is the one you see at 1:10-1:15 its two years older but a lot cleaner.

The radio code comes in a card found with the books that come with the car, unfortunately as the clio is an older car and likely to have had many previous owners the books and card can go missing, as with the code. I think there are sites on the internet that can retrieve a missing code its worth a google to find out, otherwise car audio specialists normally offer a radio decoding service

At 1:31 in the video the wires are soldered together showing the colours, its orange to blue, pink to brown. Although thats just for the pretensioner under the passenger seat, if your unsure about any of the other wires have a look under the seat of another clio to see the colour combination. I just cant remember off the top of my head what colours go where. Any confusion or problems feel free to send a Private message.

It sounds like it, although im not 100% sure, try the renault forums with that specific code number just to be sure of what it is.

Hi. I spilt red bull in the cup holder and now the ecu is water damaged and the car will not tart. The ignition turns and the immobiliser light flashes. It happened every since I spilt the drink.

Hi ,nice video .Just wondering which wires to connect on the drivers side, as there are more than the passengers side, i think ?. More than one orange . Which colour goes with which?
@peugeotCitroen2CV6 жыл бұрын
The best thing to do is remove one pair of wires from the connector at a time and solder those together. Ie one wire from the male connector and its corresponding one from the female connector. The airbag wires are orange, possibly ones for the seat airbag (depending on specification) and another for the pretensioner which i think they came with as standard.

Hi Peugeot,citeron2cv, thanks very much for replying. It was and is a bunch of strange electronic problem. Managed to find fault, causing strange lights situation, it was a bad earth to one head light. Ever since I got this car(47000,only)it was serviced and mot last February. I hate to accuse the garage as he's my dad's mechanic, if u get me.but when I put the clio in for service it had absolutely no problem. I wonder if they knocked something or...well I just don't know. When I try to squirt front screen with washer it comes out the back screen washer, and when I squirt back it still comes from back, sometimes it does as asked but rarely. Also the interior light has stopped working and the horn. Also have this airbag service lights, which people on here say is common. I've done their recommendations under passenger seat, no joy. It's a lovely tidy little car with a great engine. I'd hate to lose it cos I don't know what I'm doing. Any advice will be gratefully received. Thank you,Jay

Hi Jay It may be worth looking into the wiring to see if perhaps someone has bodged a repair in the past casuing the washers to work in that manner. Check that the front wiper motor works if you supply voltage directly to it, then work back from there. The interior light, has the bulb went faulty? As for the horn that could be the horn itself or the contacts in the steering wheel For the airbag plug the car into a diagnostic machine to see exactly what it says is wrong, the wires under the seats is a quick fix that works most times but there are a number of other reasons why the light would come on and plugging a computer in to read the codes tages the guessing away.

My airbag light and service light only comes on when it is cold. If it is warm then it won't come on. Also if it's cold and it comes on, drive around a bit then restart it won't come back on. Does this help find out which is the cause of the problem, under the seat or the airbag ecu?

I know this is somewhat a stupid question, but, what device do you use in order to know what's wrong with your Clio?
