When I had a lesser Clio, I remember visiting the dealership in East Yorkshire, finding a Clio Williams in the showroom awaiting it's new owner. The dealer principal told me the new owner was 78 years old, but also an ex-Spitfire pilot, who wanted "the last thrill of his life"... Sir, who ever you were, I hope you enjoyed that iconic car as much as I was envious of you!

172/182s are actually getting more and more difficult to find now, and prices are definitely starting to rise. Used to be easy to find one for £1500 - £3000 now they are more. I had a friend with a WIlliams Clio a loooong time ago. He took me for a spirited spin in a car park and I giggled like a school girl - at the time I owned a Vauxhall Nova Antibes with a leaky sunroof. I've had the great privilege to drive in some fairly exotic cars since that tender age, and I can honestly say that the little Renault (closely followed by my girlfiriends Renault 5 in the late 90's) are still among the very best cars I've ever experienced.

Would really love to see Henry get behind the wheel of an SiR Civic, also built as Homologation specials, they had 160hp in 1990 and 170hp by 1993, from only 1.6 litres. They were also made in far larger numbers, in the 10s of thousands, rather than just a few thousand. They were sold in the UK and Europe, with slightly less hp as the VTi, and the Japanese market models have been appearing in the UK as used imports for a few years now.

For sure. But I think the DC2 & DC5 integras are worth a visit too as values for these are set to go even higher, maybe a euro r too? Lots of interesting Hondas out there.

Williams have been commanding good money for some time. If we’re talking Clios, I bought a good condition 182 Trophy with 100k miles on for £7500 6 months ago. Low mileage original cars are already selling for over £20k and the market is still rising, with cheaper cars being dragged ever higher. Good news for me as I still get to drive and enjoy it without worrying about the value disappearing. Grab one whilst you still can, unbelievable fun on a B road.
@acarguy37733 жыл бұрын
Wow! What is the Trophy like? I almost got a 182 (cup or Trophy, I would have been happy with a cup still I'm sure) but ended up getting a 200 FF instead and absolutely LOVE it! I was so torn between a 200 or a 182 (don't like the 197 that much and 182>172 imo ) and part of me still isn't sure if I would prefer a 182, but I suspect the 200 is nicer to live with even if it is stiff as anything and bounces me out of my seat over some bumps haha. I've done 2k miles in 2 months of ownership so I care about the interior and stuff like that a bit. The main difference is how much lighter the older cars are, the 200 is over 1200kg which is light by today's standards but it barely has any more power than the 182 really and is significantly heavier) But the chassis is phenomenal, It's so easy to rotate and just wants to turn in faster and faster each time, absolutely fantastic on a B road! :)
@MrGrentch3 жыл бұрын
They were a "bargain" five or ten years ago. The Clio Williams is _long_ past the bottom of its value curve. Great little car though. When the Hagerty chap talks about similar era cars having "gone through the roof" in the majority of cases the big money prices are for _ultra_ low mileage, essentially NOS examples. When one of those makes a big price then for a time anyway people selling much lesser cars of the same model think theirs is just as "valuable" and for a time a few buyers think the same, but it quickly enough stablises. Yes there was the what 30K plus? Pug 205 GTi, that fell out of a time machine where the original paint was still wet, but now they run anywhere between 5k for a ropey example to 15k for a half decent one with a couple of dealers chancing their arm above that. And I can't see how something like the Renault 5 GT turbo values "have gone through the roof" either given the average price seems to be between 10-15k Sterling and they've been like that for a good while now. Interestingly the 90's Japanese stuff have gone up in value over the last couple of years and they don't have any of them in this Hagerty expert guide. Never mind that the Hagerty chap suggested the Williams 3 as a good bet, when if you're looking to "invest" the 1 is clearly the model to go for. TBH this just sounds like industry marketing speak hoping to increase the perception of higher values for these cars and hoping it will reflect reality. Though of all the ones I can see in their lineup the Porsche Boxter is a car that is a good bet. Under appreciated and undervalued for too long.

@@nathanb2100 Yeah I heard there was a thing with the Vauxhall/Lotus Carlton that it was too fast for even the UK police cars to keep up with it at the time, so it was generally driven by drug dealers and ram-raiders etc. for that reason. The UK government even tried to have it banned because it was relatively inexpensive and fast. This also inevitably added to the car’s infamy and ironically was the reason why it was so hot at the time. Me personally I just think it looks gorgeous. I think most of the cars here have already appreciated somewhet. 986 Boxster was pennies on the dollar pre corona, now they're asking about 4 times what it used to be...for a car with an even less reliable engine than the 996's. The Clio Williams as many have noted has already gone through the roof, I'm seeing 205 GTis worth less than this and that was arguably a more landmark a car. I've read that this might be the best hot hatch ever though so I dunno. Money talks I guess. Too much of it around on everything.
