The Renault Sandero Stepway is a well-specced budget car offering with a modicum of crossover appeal. The range recently underwent a facelift and received an equipment update in a bid to remain competitive in an increasingly cutthroat market. Here’s a closer look at the newcomer.
Still powered by a 0.9-litre 3-cylinder turbopetrol motor, the top-of-the-range Stepway derivative features nice-to-have features such as LED daytime running lights, a redesigned multifunction steering wheel and 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system replete with a navigation function.

Have had the 2016 model now for just over a year and the sandero keeps surprising. Brilliant Renault dealership service at its 1st service. truly reliable bargain in this segment packed with tech. That 900cc motor is a gem with great tractability when needed and a real world fuel consumption average of 5,3l to 100km. My 1st Renault ever and certainly not going to be the last.

Today, I just came from a Renault dealership here in Durban Umhlanga and was blown away with the Dynamique. Really considering buying it. On a serious note though, how good is it with fuel? And does it have the Hill Launch Assist? No rolling back on a hill?

How is the fuel consumption? And how does it do on the freeway and long distance drive?

I have a 2015 Sandero Expression with 45000km on the clock. No problems thus far. Tokai Renault has so far provided excellent service. The service came to R1700.00. I am happy with the car and are looking at upgrading to the STEPWAY.

The Sandero is still an amazing car for its price. Especially the New Stepway Plus. Fuel consumption is awesome and people underestimate this vehicle.

Thank you for a highly informative, well produced and entertaining review! I was hoping to see some performance comments too though. I understand that speed and acceleration is a little irrelevant in a 0.9l but I'd love to know how it handles real-world issues like overtaking and traffic crawling on idle. Thumbs up nonetheless!

This is simply the best car in the segment. Why would anyone buy a Vivo and pay more when it is outdated using old technology and has no features. Same goes for the extremely ugly and horribly cheaply made Etios that feels like a cheap tin can with old technology. None of those cars come with LED lights, sat nav, cruise control, rear pdc or steering wheel controls. The Sandero even has a far superior and way more modern turbo engine. Not to mention safety coming with ESP and hill start assist across the range. Then there still the 5 year 150000km warranty AND standard service plan!! What an amazing value for money car that doesn't make you feel like you're shopping on a budget. People who buy the Vivo and Etios will never know how much car they could've gotten for their money. Renault has shown all of them that cheap doesn't have to mean ugly, low tech or cheap feeling. Well done!!

I agree very much . People mostly go for the common stuff like toyota and vivo but those cars are outdated and very boring nonetheless, very easy to steal too and that means because its common car , insurance prices are more than likely to be much higher . Especialy when more young people tend to go for these cars...... id rather be the odd one out and purchase the stepway which looks awesome .

I don't agree, the best option here is to buy a used, slightly more upmarket car, like a used Honda Jazz or Toyota Yaris.

This is a clear cut Dacia model, not Renault (although Dacia is their property for almost 20 years, so technically they own everything Dacia, including this car ;)). In most places in Europe, these - i.e. Dacia - cars are considered the very bottom of the range in all segments they're sold, especially in terms of price. Consider this: as I'm writing this, the most expensive, all included, Sandero Stepway with a diesel 1,461 liter, 90 HP engine is by 22% less expensive than the cheapest, bare bones VW Golf (a.k.a. the dullest car money can buy). And if you go for the cheapest Sandero, you can buy two and still it will cost less than the cheapest Golf does. This is a no brainer! And still nobody drives them, you will be pressed to see one on the streets (but you will see thousands of Golfs ;)). Such is the perception of these cars. However, stick a Renault badge on, ship it to the opposite side of the globe, and all of the suddent car reviewers think it's great! That's the kind of insane world we're living in ;)

So you don't have the option of the 1.5 dci engine. Why is it marketed as a Renault in south Africa and not a Dacia?

Because no one will buy it. It's better to market it as a renualt

If u look at Dacia Sandero presentation the conclussions are very different. It s the same car with different badge. So Renault Sandero is good and Dacia Sandero is bad. Tottaly wrong. It s the same car.

wyndts4 The engine is excellent. It is very tractable and unlike many cars in this segment like the Etios and Vivo, it doesn't slow down on inclines because the turbo allows it to make full use of all the torque from low revs

Yes, It is known in UK and other markets also, like the Duster as Dacia badge. It is rebadged in South Africa. SA also has the Kwid, which is made in India and is very basic (with a 1 star Ncap rating vs Stepway's 4, and thus not safe enough for Europe) compared to Stepway, although much cheaper at about R 130 000 (2018)
