One of the new features we have to enjoy in DaVinci Resolve 17 is Render in Place. In this video, we'll look into why Render in Place in Davinci Resolve 17 is so helpful to your workflow. Render in place saves you tonnes of time thanks to how easy and convenient it is to use but also that it can help you get real-time playback of effect heavy clips.
Also, we'll look at a real professional example that I had recently when working on a project using Resolve Colour Managed colour science but also wanting to create graphics and animated titles in Fusion. There is a current issue (at the time of posting this video) that means when working in Resolve Colour Managed colour science and the Davinci Wide Gamut colour space the colours of Fusion generated compositions (particularly texts and backgrounds) will not look correct in the Edit page. I therefore really needed to use Render in place in Davinci Resolve 17 to help me get around this issue and deliver the work on time.

In the video, I am focusing on the professional project where we used it to fix an issue caused by a bug when working in Colour Managed and doing motion graphics in Fusion. Do remember that it's a huge time saver if you're just colour grading with lots of nodes or perhaps using intensive effects in the Edit page and you need to get real-time playback in Davinci Resolve 17.

Pretty impressed that you came up with this workaround. Not sure how you stumbled on it. In the Resolve forums the other day a guy was going on about using ACES and Fusion problem - not sure exactly what the problem was, but I suggest he look into using "Render in Place" but he couldn't get it working. Which is not surprising considering the steps you had to make here. Doesn't sound like a little bug to me - kind of resembles a big bug. The good news with your work here is that it look to me that if they fix the bug, that it won't break your video. So great video for being so clever and working this out. cheers.

That's so kind of you Jim, Thank you! I think editing is so much about problem-solving and slowly getting better at it, day by day. Yeah, I agree it's actually quite a big bug as this should just work. It's also not new for 17 as it was present in 16 too. I spoke with the awesome Fusion Guru that is Bernd Kilmm of VFXStudy and even he agreed it wasn't right. Hopefully, they can sort it for a future upgrade and glad that Render in Place is there as an option. Actually, it didn't slow us down in production either which was key. Basically, stay in yRGB until you've locked the image and titling work (having rendered the bits from Fusion out) then switch over to Colour managed and Davinci Wide Gamut for the grade and then export once complete. You can switch back and forth if necessary but easier to do it all in one and then switch over to grade and export. All the best!

Thanks for this video :-) Working on a project with a 4:3 aspect ratio. Render in place renders in 16:9 and thus gives me a stretched image on the timeline. Was looking for a setting to change that behaviour, but cannot find anything. Suggestios?

Does this also apply to Standalone Fusion? Because this is basically the reason I use it, too much weird behavior from fusion tab. Too many extra steps and some adjustments that automatically happen in the background.

Good question Tony...I must say, I don't know! I haven't installed the stand alone version - the Studio licence key does allow you to install Fusion and Resolve I've been told (although haven't tried it myself yet).

@@AlexCameron-Depiqd Yeah I bought a Fusion Studio 16 dongle and it let me install Resolve studio as well. I started on standalone and for me the tab is just inferior in every way. Especially the UI.

In DR 17.4, opening a render-in-place file, there’s no sound. Is this correct, or another bug?

Thanks Alex, very thorough. I had some serious issues using render in place, may of contributed to my graphics card needing to be replaced. Or perhaps the unlucky last function I tried to use before said graphic card died. Moving on, I was thinking of using Render In Place to use to actually replace BM Production 4k DNG sequence, just to reduce the size of the file footprint. Would you recommend! Also the colour management is great. Will immplement.

Thanks Albert for your comment and watching the video. Sorry to hear the graphics card died (🪦). Hope it wasn't just the Render in Place that did it. What you've suggested sounds interesting and initially I'm thinking that it would work, but are you trying to reduce the file footprint on your storage (internal or external)? With RIP (unfortunate abbreviation, given the GPU issue you've had 😂), it's making new media that, depending on the format you render to, will take up space on your drives. It may not therefore actually help if that's you end goal. Would it help playback, yes I think it would again based on the codec you use. Would you lose the ability to grade the raw file, yes but a codec like ProRes 4444 would retain a huge amount of information still. Let me know if that helps. Sorry for the slow reply. Can only get to the YT comments ever so often. Much faster on BuyMeACoffee 😉

@@AlexCameron-Depiqd I have aborted the idea converting, since the process of the output introduced artefacts. Not on original footage. All my projects with the DNG's are old so don't need to worry about playback so much and I have it offline. On a different note; I'am finding artefacts being introduced on my 4k and 6k Braw footage. I'am spending a lot of time trying to get a clean Prores output. This is after 2 new graphic cards. Thanks again for your response.

If one is switching timeline resolutions to help playback and you render in place clips when working in a lower res 1080p timeline, what happens to them when you re-scale the timeline to 4KUHD for output? Will the lower resolution RIP proxy clip get scaled to 4K? Should you "Decompose to Original" all RIP clips before output timeline to 4K to get the highest quality?
@AlexCameron-Depiqd
@AlexCameron-Depiqd 3 жыл бұрын
That's a great question. I haven't checked this fully myself but I'm inclined to say that essentially you're right. The RIP will be set to the timeline resolution and is a completely new clip. However, if you have your input scaling of mismatched resolution files to be 'scale to fit' then the 1080p RIP clip will automatically be scaled up to 4K for you when you switch the timeline back. Of course you wouldn't want this as you'll be degrading the quality of your image. You could then change the Scaling to be centre crop with no resizing and use Super Scale (set to x2) to do the scaling of the 1080p RIP clip back to timeline resolution - as the SS feature is very good. For me though, I think I'd rather just switch the timeline back to 4K, let Resolve auto scale them to fit, then 'Decompose to Original' and then just render out from the native camera files and not the RIPs. If when you render them you change the clip colour or flag the RIP clips so you can easily identify the RIP media (or a smart bin) then that should save you some time. Hope that helps.

Hi there. Another fix might be right click on the compound clip in the Colour page and choose 'bypass' colour management' this should fix everything while staying in your colour managed workflow.
@AlexCameron-Depiqd

You’d think so right? Sadly it doesn’t though as it is something I’ve tried. Unless it was fixed in recent update since the video was published. It may be a bug so have reported it to BMD but for now this is the only work around I could find. Still, glad that Render in Place is a thing now! Thanks so much for your comment and watching the video.

Thanks for watching and great comment. However, good news…It does allow alpha renders but you need to remember to use a format that supports an alpha channel. In my case that’s Pro Res 4444 (I’m sure there’s a DNxHD or HR alternative that would work if you’re on windows - can a windows user jump in here?)

@@chumcool Is that DNxHD/HR don't? Or they don't support Alpha Channel Renders? I may have misunderstood then, using ProRes 4444 I am able to export graphics created in Fusion and then rendered in place to have a transparent background. Were you referring to something else?

If you have time to create your own video that means your bussines is not working properly or your hourly rate is ridiculously low. I understand you are an educator but your initial statement is just laughable in any point of view and give absolutely false hope to people. If you have a bussines you need invest your time and resources on your core bussines not on losing time try to do what a professional can do faster and for cheaper. Sound like you don't want people get rich. The secret of successfull buissinesen is hiring people that are better than you and not trying to do most of you can (and lose time) because is cheaper. This is the loser recipe.

Appreciate your view on things. I feel there are lots of ways that a successful business can still produce their own content with the right training, strategy and processes in place. I’ve coached several. Remember not all businesses are one man bands and can dedicate a team member to do this work. Day to day, regular content can easily be produced internally and it helps businesses grow awareness (which can often be hard to justify spending money on when the ROI is so speculative).
