A trick I learned when rendering fat, start out with water in the pot. The water and steam will bring the fat to rendering temp more evenly and quickly, with less chance of burning. It also increases yield and makes a purer tallow. Pour the liquid into another container and let the fat separate and solidify on top. Heat the skimmed tallow to remove remaining water. Steps in this process can be repeated to get the last drop of fat or purify the tallow further. The defatted broth could also be used in soups and such.

Loved this vid Dave my neighbor always rendered skunk fat for colds and was used as a chest rub. It does not smell as strong as one would think. The finished product does have a faint skunk order. I save all the tallow from deer make a lovely smell when lite I usually end up having a vension steak

Excellent video thanks. I've harvested a few raccoons and the fat content was impressive then when I thought I could make a candle I was pretty disappointed lol. I just made an oil lamp and that was fine. Interesting timing I just ordered some trap wire from SRO plus an earth anchor for my dog proof ( also from you guys) so I will definitely be copying this concept thanks again.

Will this rendered tallow go rancid in the long term? And if so, are there things you can do to prevent this? An additive perhaps. Also, is it ok to use on a simple firearm such as the H&R or will it gum it up? Thanks

This stuff works great for making your own trapping lures too. Rendered skunk fat is said to aid in many respiratory ailments as well. Have not experienced much in the way of odors when I render, but, I may be used to it. Find your path.

if you have some bees wax. or even really short unusable candle pieces, you can mix it with that tallow to make a longer burning candle.

Rendered fat from animals will smell tons different that most are used too, especially nowadays. A handy trick is using wild sage or other herbs. A few leaves will help cut down on the smell. Just throw them in the pot with the fat. Julia

Couple of tips ; Fat contains a lot of water , so rendering fat uncovered will speed up process (evaporation) . Also once rendered you can strain/pass thru a fine chinois . This will give you a cleaner final product . BTW, a chinois is nothing more than kitchen speak for a fine strainer . Not so vital in a camp setting , but nice to have around the homestead !

would chopping the raw fat into small chunks make more tallow or help the speed of the process?
@notyourname1
@notyourname1 7 жыл бұрын
I'd think smaller chunks would go a little faster, better heat dispersion and all. But being done in a covered pot it might not make the most noticeable difference.
@juliacampbell5881
@juliacampbell5881 7 жыл бұрын
Notyourname1, Actually rendering in a covered pot works better. Smaller chunks are optional but you will still have a certain amount of water in the fat. A covered pot will steam off that water at a low temperature without burning it. Julia

Dave, how do you keep rendered animal tallow from going rancid in it's raw state or rancid on the items you use it on i.e. wood, leather, canvas or bullet patches??? Also how do you keep the high acid rate of tallow from pitting metal items over many years of use (20-30 years and then aged in, this is why many old firearms are pitted due to the acidic rate of animal fats)??
@AnythingArtist
@AnythingArtist 7 жыл бұрын
