Cool video, but here's a warning: if you render all the tracks via master, and you have a compressor and a limiter on the master, the sum of the stems will be dramatically different than what you're hearing within the DAW. That's because the comp+limiter are not reacting to the sum, but rather to the single files. A way to solve this is to use compressors and limiters that can receive a side chain signal, and feed a "ghost" render of the sum to them. Unfortunately, reaper is unable to account for these ghost tracks with any of the rendering options, so you have to render all tracks one by one or use a custom script.

Yeah, but there is a problem with your method, too... For example: if an (film) editor decides to start with your soft piano as an intro (bringing the other parts of the song slowly in, say section B), the pumping effect is recognisable at the very beginning because of your sidechain function... how do you work with this issue? sorry for my bad English, hope you get the point.

the thing with rendering by "selected tracks via master" that I found, is that effects like compression and saturation will apply individually to each track as if it was soloed. Once I heard a great mastering engineer define "stems" as a selection of tracks that if were put together out of phase with the mix file, would completely cancel it. As in, the sum of stems is a carbon copy of the mix. Rendering "selected tracks via master", won't apply, for example, the ducking in compression that would create the kick drum on the rest of the tracks. The SFX in the master track will only apply individually, as if each instrument was soloed. And therefore, the sum of stems will be very close to the mix, but not exactly the same. At least that's what was happening to me last time I checked, though. Maybe this has been worked on by Cockos in more recent updates!

Yes. You're correct. But I don't think REAPER should change this behavior because when it's done the way you're talking about, the tracks will sound weird by themselves. So if you were to use a vocal stem in a completely different track, it would pump and breathe based on the old track. The correct way to do what you're talking about (if you have FX on the master track) is to sidechain everything to those FX. Yeah. It's a PITA. But this way everything is feeding those FX whether they're ON or OFF. I might make a video showing this. Stay tuned. Thanks.

I was just about to post the same. I don't even think it is possible to have the master fx duck as it had all the tracks fed without including in the file the tracks themselves.... at least without routing workarounds in the project, as mentioned.

Not sure if this a work around i set up stereo buss and feed everything there before hitting the master buss so i use monitoring plug ins only on my master track like insight span metric ab so i think that would bypas this problem plus i can adjust the level of everything before it hits the master channel if i need to do some fine gain adjustment i think the stems then would print as per your actual mix

I use a Kontakt template with 16 midi tracks in the folder and was never able to break out the individual tracks to convert to WAV file for mixing until I figured it out yesterday after months of looking.Everything was routed to the master track.And here I wake up this morning and lo and behold you have a complete soup to nuts tutorial on rendering.Thanks for being so comprehensive.I suspect a lot of people are in the same boat as I was,being confused as to how to mix midi from templates who have big libraries of instruments to want to make use of.Most of the tutorials I have seen on Reaper deal with audio tracks not midi.Render selected tracks from master did the trick for me and now I can proceed to mix.Your tutorials are always very useful and thanks again.

Hi Kenny. For stems, I also like to add the wildcard $filenumber[001] at the beginning of the filename as it can help with the import ordering in the other daw.

I always render stame with names starting with $tracknumber, that way if imported into another project they are automatically in order.

Re: FX. Say I have a great H/W Reverb like a Bricasti M7 and want to add this reverb for a group I've stemmed out. What I've done in the past is print the return of the reverb as well so that the mixer can choose to use the return, increase or decrease the amount mixed in, or not use it all together.

I have 24 individual files at different times. When selecting the source to stem and the wildcard to track, I'm getting all files rendered at the same length. How do I render all at once while keeping each files time. 24 Track (Stemmed ) Different lengths.
