Rendering the fat in the slow cooker looks so much easier than in a frying pan like I've done before.

Girl! I love that I was introduced to your channel through Fermented February this year! Not only do we share the same first name, we have A LOT of similar opinions and interests! I'm still fairly new to deer harvesting, though my honey has been hunting pretty much his whole life. (We've only been together for three deer seasons so far. LOL) I mentioned using the deer fat "for something" and he said he'd been taught that deer fat is no good for people. So now I am going to use this knowledge you've shared and plan on using venison tallow for our homemade soap and see if it lathers and moisturizes as well as coconut oil soap (which is my personal favorite). Your videos always get me excited to do dtuff! Thank you!

It must be a "Heather" thing!! 😉😉 I'd better make the soap from our tallow before the busy spring season sets in!

We don't care for the mouth feel of deer tallow. We use it for our chickadee pie . The birds have shown they prefer it to lard ..
@SageandStoneHomestead2 жыл бұрын
It's got to be the different types of oils and acids that they crave or need!! That is a great use for it!! My husband and I were talking and wondering if the diet of the deer is what makes an impact on how palatable it is. The deer around here are always eating from the corn and soy fields.
@floydlenz22802 жыл бұрын
@@SageandStoneHomestead Absolutely !! If they're eating browse and acorn mast, they'll be stronger tasting everywhere.. I could tell by the carcass that the deer was on ag fields.. That doesn't happen here, it's all oak hickory forest and cow pasture.. So even if they get fat like that one was , we trim our meat and use it for the birds..
@SageandStoneHomestead2 жыл бұрын
That makes so much sense!!

Happy birthday! Hopefully your wish comes true! Nice deer. We've been seeing an above average amount of fat on all the deer we harvested this year... a bad sign for a long, cold winter ahead! The beaver dams had had ridiculously high feed piles too.

This was from one of the two deer that he got this season!! This was the second deer. It had a ton of fat on it! Over a half gallon rendered out.

Happy Birthday Heather!!! Hope your birthday was an especially blessed one! Loved this video! Great information! What a valuable harvest of tallow, both deer & goat. If the deer in your area have access to corn the tallow will have a much higher quality, better texture & flavor than if it just feeds on browse, etc. (Lessons from working in a meat locker) Here the deer are incredibly fat from all the corn. My dad always said it much improved the flavor of the meat also. You have been abundantly blessed this year! Prayers for Christine!!!! God bless!
@SageandStoneHomestead2 жыл бұрын
That was our theory too!! They eat tons of corn and soy from the fields.

Happy birthday! 🎂 and Congrats on the deer Levy and great shot! Quick question when you had issues grinding the fat, was it frozen?
@SageandStoneHomestead2 жыл бұрын
So I froze it and couldn't get it out of the bowl I had it in. So I did thaw it back out in the fridge. I almost never have the freezer space to lay things flat to flash freeze or freeze in cubes!!
@Alpha1Farms2 жыл бұрын
@@SageandStoneHomestead I’ve never ground straight up fat but when grinding sausage I know it’s important, not just for final texture but also for grinding, to have it at least semi frozen

Interesting. I never would have thought to render deer tallow. Was that a doe? I wonder if it would be different from a buck in rut? If I don’t remove all the tallow from venison and it gets ground into burger it is just plain bad. Nice video!
@SageandStoneHomestead2 жыл бұрын
Yes this was a doe. There was some fat that Levi said he avoided because of scent glands? A lot of this was from the inside of the deer plus some of the fat off the back.
