These last a decent number of miles given how thin the rubber is. It is not a soft compound. The extra grip comes from the suppleness and the tread, which interlock with the fine grain of the pavement. Yes, the tread does grip better than slicks, especially in the wet. The tread also largely remains as the tire wears; it does not wear off as you might expect, but becomes less sharp. Wear 1.5mm off and you still can see the pattern clearly (which I did not expect and would wear them too thin as a result). I would recommend experimenting with lower pressures; you don’t loose speed with these like you do on stiffer tires, but you will gain grip, ride quality, fewer flats, and longer wear. Ultimately, if it feels good to ride, you are not loosing anything by being softer.

Yup. With a supple tire, lower pressures (but not so low that they get sloppy in corners) are almost always better. When in doubt, the Berto % drop chart is a good ballpark reference. Btw, have you ridden recent Vittoria Corsa models and if so, how different are Compass / Rene Herse from those? Would be looking at the standard version more so than EL

They are such a superior tire, I've run at 28c on my Trek Domane, then 38c and their 44c on my commuter bike, all with the standard casing. Even for daily use to and from the office, I got a couple years out of each set, a few thousand miles of commuting per year. The feel and enjoyment I get from riding Rene Herse far outweighs any durability complaints I have with them. Wear will appear as a slight squaring off of the center strip. I've never torn a sidewall, or suffered a catastrophic flat despite their 'suppleness' (knock wood). My only other recommendation: get the largest size your bike will fit. They all roll so well, the extra comfort and feel is worth it, with minimal weight penalty.

I can’t wait until Tuesday’s video vlog if today’s (Saturday) ride. Hopefully this tire lives up to the Shakespearean Velo nuts description & it doesn’t romanticize our wallets instead. This is why I love channels like Veloharmony which gives us insight on products whether good or bad. Keep up the excellent work El & Paul ✔️

I have been using these tyre in extralight casing for all my bikes. Racing, gravel and endurance and would not ride anything else. Just get the extralight version. I never had any sidewall damage despite commuting in pothole filled roads in Kuala Lumpur. Put low(er) pressure on this tyre and you will get less puncture. I put 45psi on my 32mm extralight and it is like riding on clouds. Super fast rolling, super comfort, super grippy. I wouldnt ride any other tyre even it is given for free.

René Hearse makes a good tire. They're made in the Panaracer factory. If you like these, I'd also recommend the Strada Bianca/Paris Roubaix Open tubular tires from Challenge. They're handmade and the tread is glued onto the carcass like a tubular but are made for clincher rims. Paired with a latex tube sends them to a new level.

Came across the channel last week, and saw the “Sew ups” video. Then some more... and now you have a portuguese subscriber. 😁 Those tires have a similar rolling surface as my Veloflex Master open tubulars (or racing clinchers as they also call them) that came with my carbon wheels that i bought used. I don’t recall if you spoke about TPI on your videos about tires, but i think it’s also an important aspect to take in consideration. The Veloflex Master are 330 TPI and i paired them with Tubolito inner tubes (40 grams only), and they are very comfortable and fast.

Love your channel. Just discovered it. "Stickiness" of a tire is almost always due to a soft compound rubber. They will have unbelievable adherence to the pavement over a hard compound rubber, but unfortunately this comes at a cost. The tire will not last as long as a hard compound tire. When the Acura NSX sports car was introduced several years ago the owners were up in arms when they had to replace the tires after 3,000 miles (today's passenger car tires will easily last 50,000 or more miles) and Acura just said that the tires were made of a very soft rubber to increase adherence to the road. Those Rene Hearse tires are probably made of a soft rubber compound.

Thanks for sharing Speed Racer. At this point, I plan to focus on enjoying my cycling and not how long the tires last. That is why I said I didn't think they were for everyone. I just love how they ride and really want to enjoy the feedback they provide when I am out doing what I love.

The tread compound on Rene Herse tires certainly isn't unusually long-wearing. But the tires are around 3mm thick at the centerline, which considering the thinness of the casing, means that there's a decent amount of tread rubber in there for a performance-oriented tire. Overall I've found their wear life to be pretty normal for a performance road tire at a given width (obviously the wider ones wear slower: the Rat Trap Pass ELs on my gravel bike are the most expensive tires in my stable *per tire*, but far from it *per mile*).

@@Veloharmony I have peripheral neuropathy which has weakened my hands. Consequently, it's not as easy for me to change tires as it used to be. I find a more supple tire easier for me to manipulate. That's why I use the Vittoria Corsa. I am darned if I do and darned if I don't, because the Vittoria wears faster and is more susceptible to puncture. However, when it does puncture, I'm able to change it by myself. With a more durable tire, I'd likely need some assistance. If the Rene Herse is as supple, it might be worth trying just to get the benefits of the softer (I suspect) tread compound. Did you use your Rene Herse tires with butyl or latex?
@Veloharmony
@Veloharmony 3 жыл бұрын
I think the Vittoria would still be easier to change. The suppleness of the tire does not necessarily translate to how easy it is to mount. The Vittoria and the Rene Hearse are close, but not the same. I think you should stick with the Vittoria because the Rene Hearse was not difficult to mount but not easier than the Vittoria.

Hello Veloharmony. A few of my viewers have recently referenced you in their comments on my videos. I’ve a seen a few of your videos randomly over the years so it think it’s cool that we share the same viewer base. I think the first video of yours I watched was on SMP saddles. One thing I learned on that video was the saddle rails are already angled so you don’t have to raise or lower the saddle if you move it forward or aft. I have used that in my fitting practice ever since. Thank you. I found this particular video because I was interested in reviews on Rene Herse tires from independent creators. This video is from 2 years ago. Would you mind making a new video on your experience since. Are you still riding them? Here you claim you won’t ride anything else. Is that still true? If not then what are you riding now? (See? Content idea 💡😉) Please respond to my comment here if it’s going to take some time to make a follow up video. I just became an authorized Rene Herse dealer and I’m looking to place an order for personal use and evaluation to sell to my consumers in my bike shop. In the meantime, I’m happy to recommend your channel when I find it appropriate for a topic I find we have similar principles or even opposing philosophies which give our viewers sound and safe advice and let them choose. Us little guys need to help educate the KZbin universe with quality content devoid of marketing BS.

Thanks for reaching out George. I still use Rene Hearse tires and love them, however, because they are 'premium' tires, I only use them on my biggest rides. They're not for everyday, simply because they wear quickly, can cut easily, but you enjoy them through that experience. Kinda like having 'race' tires..only use them when the ride really matters. My everyday tires cost about a third of Rene Hearse and they're Continental Ultra Sport III. They ride well and are very durable, so I use them all year, especially in training to stretch the dollars. I use Continental 5000 for fast rides and although close in price to Rene Hearse, they are a lot more durable and a great all around tire. I will make a video, as time permits to address this. I appreciate you taking the time to comment. I run a bike fit and a full service bike repair shop and am always looking for ideas.

One more joke for you El. Back in 1991 Honda had just introduced their new Prelude series. It was sleek & fast looking for its time. During the commercial it shows the Honda Prelude doing a mean spin out ( donuts ) & when the smoked cleared it shows the burnout caused a gaping hole on the concrete. All of my co workers in the break room were blown away with ooooooohs & Aaaaaaahhhs. I said to them I bet it’ll burn a hole in your wallets the same way too. We laughed so hard afterwards. But the Prelude did live up to it’s name hopefully these tires does as well.

There’s a big debate about these tires when compared to the gravelking. Being that the gravelking have the same tread pattern and cost a fraction of the Compass price. Not to mention the highlighted skepticism of Panaracer, the manufacturer of Compass tires but markets gravelking as their own brand of tires.

The ‘casing of the Rene H tires is what makes them so supple. They are a very different design than what is used on the Gravel Kings. We have experience working with Panaracer and they offer a variety of casing technologies, anti-flat technology and rubber compounds, so you can choose different tech to come up with a unique tire.

These tires are very temperamental for setting up tubeless. One of the two I set up tubeless blew off even though I followed their instructions on tubeless set up. Rene herse recommends using an inner tube in their own website and discusses extensively about why their tires should not be set up tubeless. Their customer support has been awful as well. None of my bike mechanics recommend their tires either. Very disappointed.

I have had no problems with their tires since I can't speak to their tubeless setup, since I use clinchers in their brand and sew ups with Continental.
