Even better than two other great exponents of the role, Lisa della Casa and Elisabeth Schwarzkopf. It helps greatly that Fleming speaks German beautifully. Brava.

Dalle undici in poi! Un vero destino. Fin dal sonetto... Indivisibili. Flamand sarà un poco deluso nel trovare Olivier in biblioteca al mio posto. E io? Lo scioglimento... Dovrei sceglierlo, deciderlo, disporlo? È la parola che commuove il cuore o la musica che con più vigore parla? (prende il sonetto, si mette all'arpa e comincia, accompagnandosi, a cantarlo) Nessuna rifulge al mio cor beltà se non la vostra, o deità regale; nessuna sarà mai voi l'eguale, sorga pur Venere a dir: son qua. Tal è negli occhi vostri potestà, che un guardo loro ad annientarmi vale e un altro poi mi fa rinascer l'ale, vita donando e morte a volontà. (interrompendosi) Ozioso tentar di dividerli in due. In uno fusi son musica e versi in una entità nuova. Mistero dell'ora... L'arte un'altra arte riscattò! (riprende l'arpa e canta il sonetto fino alla fine) Vivessi pur io mille anni e mille, fuor delle vostre mai vedrò pupille tali da indurre a palpitar il cor. Scorrer dovrebbe il sangue in altre vene, ché queste son del vostro amor sì piene, che un altro mai non conterranno amor. (Si leva, agitata dalla passione, e muove verso il lato opposto della scena pensierosa.) L'amor vostro m'avvolge teneramente intessuto di versi e note. Dovrei io lacerar questa trama? Non ne son forse un filo io stessa? Decider per l'uno? Per Flamand, quell'anima grande, occhi grandi e chiari... per Olivier, l'intrepido, l'appassionato Olivier? (improvvisamente si vede allo specchio) Cosa dice il cuore di Madeleine? Amata sei e non puoi donarti, Dolce ti sarebbe l'esser debole... vorresti patteggiar con l'amore, ma sei tu stessa in fiamme, non puoi salvarti. Se scegli l'uno, tu perdi l'altro! Ché sempre si perde quando s'acquista! (di nuovo alla propria immagine allo specchio) Non c'è nel tuo sguardo forse ironia? Esigo risposta! E tu quel tuo sguardo che indaga! Tu taci? O Madeleine! Madeleine! Vuoi tu bruciare fra due fuochi. (s'avvicina allo specchio ancora d'un passo) O immagine dell'invaghita Madeleine, sai tu consigliarmi, sai suggerirmi lo scioglimento di questa loro opera? Ce n'è uno che non sia banale?

Impossible to be too slow with Cappricio. This passage is transcendent, so might as well bask in its infinite scope.
