I stopped studying and performing for a number of reasons. I could blame it on my nearly paralyzing stage fright. I could blame it on money. I could blame it on being lazy. All of those things are true. But.. the real reason is that I chose drugs over opera. And now I have health issues that interfere with my throat. 1/2/07 is my clean and sober anniversary (7 years), by the way.

thanks for your insightful comment. I happen to really like Fleming's Mozart in general (especially her Countess, but that's besides the point). I would totally agree with you, however, if your were talking about her baroque interpretations. Wow, she's amazing and all, but when she tries to do Handel-- it's just not right. So I understand where you're coming from, I just like my Mozart this way.

Normally I am not a huge fan of Ms. Fleming, but she certainly does this rather difficult work with grace and poise. Probably one of the more consistent performances of it.

What would you consider educated? I studied voice from the age of 14 until i was 27. I sang professionally from the age of 16 until about 30. I moved to New York at 36 and auditioned for 3 opera companies including the Amato Opera (a big deal here in New York), all of whom offered me lead roles. I don't like her, either. but I am glad that you know all 99% of the educated opera community; it's so nice they have a spokesperson.

It sounds like she’s pushing her voice through most of this song. She can afford to relax a little more. It would make her coloratura a lot clearer and cleaner too. Love her voice though.

Agreed!! That is the definitive version. I always think of Anne Sofie also. Of course Eliot Gardner is a class act also. I want for Renee to do well. I know she puts a lot of effort into her singing. The trouble is that people like Anne Sofie von Otter, Kiri TE Kanawa, Lucia Popp, Gundula Janowitz and Maria Stader are in a different league. They never sing anything badly.

my comment had less to do with her voice, and more to do with her interpretation of mozart, which was good. the original comment said she did not interpret correctly. but, she did. her stylistic choices are fitting with the period and particularly mozart's works.

It's not a big deal nationally, but it is a big deal locally, regardless of what your opinion is. B ig deal doesn't imply big stage or big theater. It has a great reputation as a training ground for future starts, including George Shirley and Mignon Dunn. I would never say that it compares to NYCO or the Met.

I don't agree at all. Every good love song or sacred aria is in facts both (love and sacred), joined in joy. Particularly when it's right in the lyrics ("Laudamus Te"). Here someone asked about Renée's hand moves; I think she is just in joy singing this - which is fully appropriate IMO. Thu 13 Dec 2007 12:41 GMT
@matazerbo17 жыл бұрын
Sorry, maybe there is a misunderstanding. I agree with you that sacred aria should be sing in joy. The problem is not her smile, but her "musical interpretation". Normally insiders (as me) could find this performance far from the style requested for the music of Mozart. Donizetti, for example, is quite far from Mozart. Musicians know that very well. Apart this performance -- doubtful only for the style - I think that Renée has realised a respectable career.

Because my stomach is paralyzed, my throat is exposed to a lot of acid due to acid reflux. Singing can be a rather painful experience, not only physically, but enotionally, because my voice is a shadow of what it once was. I still sing for myself, though. Oddly enough, I can sing better marking than full voice, so I sing alot walking down the street.

Try chopping up a fresh garlic clove in small pieces and swallowing it whole with a glass of water. This kills any bad bacteria in your stomach that can lead to acid reflux. It works wonders for me. 🙂

All I can say is that compared to great Mozart singers of the past, such as Edith Mathis, Anna Moffo (her Laudamus Te is stunning), or Elly Ameling, this is isn't such great singing. I have trouble separating style from substance. I think her coloratura is sketchy at best (although early on she was more accurate, and she sings this - to my ears, like it was written about 40 years later. Opera is sooooo subjective. We are all correct, because opinions are never wrong.

@@janetflier6192 Do you know anything about singing? It sounds like you're reacting from an emotional viewpoint and not at all from an educated place of awareness. There are correct and incorrect ways of singing classical music. That's one of the beauties of this genre: that there is still a standard to aspire to, unlike most other genres. Renee's voice is undoubtedly beautiful, but it is her technique that people are speaking about here. And she is far from perfect in this area of her voice.

She holds into most of the rests and her coloratura is questionable at best. The holding into the rests obscures, if not destroys, Mozart's phrasing. The poor coloratura obscures the very essence of the melodic line. If a clarinet or flute played like this, they would be ejected.
@maryvallettakeith61462 жыл бұрын
Wow, I didn't know this was a love song....oh, it's not? Then why does she act like she is trying to seduce the audience? Once again, Renee exhibits how little understanding she has of the content of which she is singing. Soccer mom meets classical music, ugh. Where are the great singers of the past who not only had astounding voices and great style (that dress is dreadful) but also understood and respected the music? Long gone, sad to say.
