Let's not gloss over the fact that each of the 5 men who actually went through the Squeeze to get to Floyd (Homer, Miller, Gerald, Burdon and Casey Jones) could've all easily gotten stuck themselves at any time (Casey Jones was a particularly close call). And potentially 3 of them had no prior experience doing anything like this (Homer, Miller and Burdon). All 5 of them were absolute legends for going so far to try and save Floyd.
@Bendakid

This story is a modern tragedy. Homer, Miller, Gerald, etc. went so far to save Floyd from Sand Cave, but that damn cave wouldn't give them a tenth of an inch. It's heartbreaking that Floyd wasn't allowed to properly rest until FAR after his death.

@@thelordofthelostbraincells It kinda hard at that time because when you dig further, the longer the exhaust line is, and any accident that leaks the gas will kill him. Furthermore, the cave has a natural sucking air, which can invisibly gather the gas into the cave, a small amount that no human can detect can become deadly not because of the gas itself, but because the gas block away the thin air he had, and that's the true problem

To be fair though, without the publicity from the public 4 of those 5 men would have never arrived to help in the first place so it's a double-edged sword. And to be fair to Homer hindsight is 20/20 and it's not like Homer ever had any experience rescuing someone trapped in a cave that deep before and it's unknown how the locals would have reacted to him ordering them to leave (it's not like he was a cop or anything). There's a ton of wasted time and manpower during the first couple of days of the rescue that could have made a difference; it isn't until the military and mining guy showed up that manpower and resources were being organized efficiently but by then it was just too late. This is why it's so important today that we have an actual trained emergency response team in every town. Having someone take charge and lead people early on can and will save lives.

Look up the "Gladbeck Hostage Crisis", and you'll see an even more modern example of media and public not only obstrucing in an ongoing emergency situation, but even actively helping and aiding the criminals in this case. To make a tl;dr: two criminals robbed a bank, then took a bus hostage (later were given a car for a getaway in exchange of most of the hostages, keeping two or three though), and public and journalists, the first to gawk or being morons and sympathizing with them, and second so to get interviews, photos, and keeping the emergency going, helped them by offering them food, drinks, directions, tips about the authorities plans, lying to authorities, preventing police from intervening or getting close, and more (plus the police being ridiculously incompetent and fucking up at every turn imaginable). It was a complete shitshow, and it's almost a miracle "only" 3 people died (two were hostages, one was a policeman who died during a chase).

Miller only came for news coverage, but ended up risking his own life multiple times for a man he didn't know and even declining a sh*tload of money in the end. Burdon may had the wrong idea, but his heart was in the right place. After the rope pull failed and the 2nd try was rejected, he could've just left. But he stayed and went back in to help the others. And Gerald with his insane stamina moving half a ton of rock in 3 hours. Also, just crawling through the squeeze alone was dangerous enough, especially after the snow melt started softening the walls, but they still did it.

The story the SCP Foundation told everyone: The body was removed from the cave and buried before being callously dug back up and put on display. The leg was lost when vandals removed his body and tossed it into a bush. His body is currently buried at a church. The reality: When Floyd was first buried, they couldn't free his leg. It was only partially covered, but they assumed there was something bigger pinning the leg down, gave up and sawed it off. Sometime after the initial burial, the grave was found empty, and the body was found back in the cave. Amnestics were administered to any witnesses, and the story about the callous land-owner was constructed. Anyone who thought they saw the leg attached to his body while he was on display actually saw a prosthetic. The prosthetic is what was lost when the vandals took the body. Someone tried to retrieve the leg. But the leg. Just. Won't. Move. It is still in the EXACT spot where it was when Floyd was buried alive, even though it's been completely uncovered at least once. Further more, the morning after his body was buried at the church yard, it was found sticking half-way out of the freshly-filled grave. They reburied it multiple times, each to the same result. One day, the area was evacuated for the day after a reburial due to an anticipated natural disaster. When people returned, the body was found back in the damn cave. It was theorized that returning the leg to the body would stop the body from moving, so D-Class were sent into the cave to make doubly sure that the leg was completely immobile by digging all the way around it. There was a cave in, and one D-Class was buried alive, dying nearly instantly. The body of Floyd stopped moving on it's own. The D-Class is to remain buried.

When it comes to caves and underground things it’s never that simple. You can’t just dig randomly even if it’s connecting a cave to another cave. As shown in the video there are boulders which will slow progress. It also took an entire professional excavation team around a 100+ hours to not even get to him with heavy equipment that the first four actual rescuers didn’t have. Stability has to be considered not just of the dug hole/passage but the entire cave. Another thing is wether the dig will cause more danger, like will removing the rock weaken stability too much. Most importantly you never know what may be above you and wether or not the rock removed was the only thing supporting it. And you never know what’s below you and a step you took now leads to you falling into another cave.

I find it interesting that a lot of reactors react the same way when they were about to attempt the 2nd rope pull (and were stopped by the locals gatekeeping). Perhaps that could have saved him, but as they say hindsight is 20/20 They could probably try to install a pulley down there to transfer the energy, pulling him parallel to the floor instead of upwards (ok, just reached the part at the end where you guys had the same thought)

If ya'll do a recap react to some of IH's content, I highly suggest reacting to SailorVince's reaction to the Costa incident, he offers some insight to how the industry works such as for example Nate when you thought the captain was just promoted out of the blue from head of security, SailorVince actually notes that's illegal to do so for the captain to have even been given that job they would have been required to take a few classes and exams just to get the documents needed to land you that position but that doesn't mean your guaranteed to have it.

I used to be fine around motorways building sites until I saw final destination 2 never saw the rest of the series didn't want to... but ever since then I don't go near scaffolding I walk along the path on the opposite side of the road where it's safe 15-50 metres away when in the city I keep my distance as much as possible... also an episode messed me up from smallville a kid was bullied in school tried to run away got hit by a car and became incapacitated... lex luthors dad decided to pay for treatments and well they used kryptonite as one of em it gave him electro magnetic ghost powers every time he got a shot and he use that power to get swift revenge on the bullies leaving lex for last (for joining the bullies) and going for oliver queen which was the main school bully! The first guy this guy killed was at the reunion party for the school a spear from the statue on roof was psychically moved and then the spear came loos fell down and impaled the guy directly through the middle of his chest in front of everybody in the middle of the day... and the scene in final destination 2 that messed me up was the crane with the large skyscraper glass pane falling on someone instantly flattening them into a bloody mess and the glass doesn't break at all I'm talking literal bug on a windshield from above pancaked! so I have a reasonable fear of falling construction resources and equipment which is why you'll never find me at a construction site... if I start a business it's gonna be in a building that already exists!... and hopefully far from any construction sites! in fact anything heavy even falling birds or anything falling fast enough to kill me just anything from above I got a fear of it, then I got irrational Arachnophobia & Acrophobia (fear of heights) I could probably treat my fear of heights with skydiving... but the spider thing isn't mental it's actually an involuntary instinctual reaction... My body just starts setting off all the alarms f&flight kicks in and I get dafu out of there... but in reality small spiders don't bother me but certain shaped spiders, fast moving towards me spiders... and incredibly large spiders will make me leave to another room so fast you'd think i'd used instant transmission! but I know all the ones in the house are harmless and until 2021 i'd actually gotten over my arachnophobia it was gone... but a series of waking nightmares at early hrs of the morning of crawling armies of spiders just flashes of all their legs moving fast towards me... hate me waking in cold sweats... I struggle to sleep for months and my hyperactive imagination doesn't help I don't even have to close my eyes to visualise flashes of spiders a gift from my autism that used to be helpful but now it's a curse because my brain keeps injecting it into real life scenarios I can't stop picturing it... honestly most spiders bodies don't even scare me some are even cute like money spiders... but hairy spiders like tarantulas shiny black spiders like widows are a no go and those camel spiders and the worst part not only do I have an amazing imagination... but I have a photographic and videographic memory so I don't even need to dream or close my eyes to see them! But the main trigger for the fear is not the bodies but the legs... which means this extends to daddy long legs now, and anything with similar double legs bent with knees up in air or worse the multi join legs are the worst trigger if a spider has 3 leg partitions I go into hyperventilation need a paper back level and I start having panic attacks and palpations. But no spider has ever bitten me, the worse thing to happen to me is have a tarantula crawl up my arm as a kid... but I was over that the past 4 years before 2021 it didn't bother me Now let's clear something up: it's not really fear it's panic outside of the moment I think bakc and realise how irrational it is and shrug it off going about my day just trying to forget what happened... it's my body tensing up and the urge to run like my life is danger! but I was fine before how did I get this bad... the only way I could conceive that this makes sense is that there is such thing as a hereditary phobia it's genetic and instinctual not mental... every fibre of your body tells you NOPE! (I like to call it the NOPE Gene as In see ya later I plan on living) kind of the same way your body tells you with pain that a part of your body is damaged! but why do we have this heriditary gene and why is it only active for some people but completely skips others... also I believe that the mental fear of spiders can trigger and unlock the genetic side of things causing a physical response this usually comes in the form of some kind of arachnid related trauma that causes the body's dormant genetics to unlock a fight or flight response for survival if the persons mental fear of such things is high enough in which it becomes a deeper and much less easy to treat issue! When your whole body is saying nope the aversion therapy is not gonna work and I think while it might work for heighst with skydiving it's not gonna work with such a deep seated fear of arachnids... that being said scorpions don't bother me as much except their similarities so it's clearly spiders that are the focus here and not all spiders just some features! i'm not geneticist or psychiatrist so I'm going on what knowledge I do have in that I mean it is a theory or arguably just pure speculation but I feel like i've seen enough evidence to believe that this is the case! So heres my theory... whether it be large or small there was a version of spiders in very ancient times that was deadly... had triple jointed legs hunted in probably swarms and attacked humans for food they wouldn't have to be particularly large just think of mosquito swarms and you get the horrible terrifying picture! this had to be tens of thousand if not hundreds of thousands of years back to have a genetic effect on humanity... but whatever this spider like creatures or just ancient species of spiders was, it was hopefully doesn't exist anymore but here lies the issue if there is a gene like this we need to identify it and remove it... because it's crippling some people to the point they can't live life like a normal person anymore... because we no longer need that gene and given technology today if such a thing still existed like killer spider swarms then we likely wouldn't need a fear gene because we would have the technology to fight it... like flamethrowers (thats a good start kill em with fire) that being said I am not prejudice we need normal spiders to keep insect and mosquito levels down especially... because then the more threatening species are less of a problem I'd gladly take whatever pill to remove my instinctual aversion to spiders specifically... theres nothing else I have a fear of or couldn't overcome (except asphyxiation or drowning) also I love birds and lizards and i instinctually feel akin to them so i'm not afraid of snakes or birds at all, I also want to learn the proper way to deal with venomous snakes but even if I got bit and survived i'd probably never be scared of em... I feel physically drawn to em except jet black shiny snakes because they remind me of spiders!, but yeah frickin love bearded dragons... and if real dragons were real and I could get the chance to ride one without it trying to barbecue me I'd do it... might even fix my fear of heights! I'd also like to ride godzilla but I know full well if He was physically possible his radiation would kill me!
