I've started looking into an AuDHD assessment because of her video. Everything she describes I have personal experience with, I just thought it was normal or I was jumpy and couldn't focus because of social media, etc. After I finished watching it, I looked up accurate and government approved assessment tests online (such as Raads) and the results stated there's a strong probability I have it, and should seek a medical professional. Sorry for the info dump, but long story short, you are absolutely right. For the longest I thought that was all normal until I watched her video.

Fair enough. I don't think I am as extreme as what's described in the video, but some of it does sound rather familiar. I mean, I've been highly suspicious that I have some kind of autism for quite some time now (I'm not officially diagnosed, but I know enough people who are to not notice the similarities), but I guess that's another thing I need to put on my list to have looked at... eventually. It's just kinda hard to do when you have an office job and are at work when the specialist are open.

I was an honor roll student with perfect attendance for years in elementary and middle school. During parent teacher conferences, it was always "Mel is so bright and smart, she is so well behaved, but she tends to draw on EVERYTHING and doesn't seem to pay attention. Still she's a dream to have in class." MY parents heard that and just assumed I was just sitting by the window too much and told me to sit in the middle up front so I wouldn't daydream. Once I hit college, all bets were off, I went from a 3.5 GPA to a 2.9 GPA in 1 quarter! I graduated with a 2.2 GPA after 8 years of trying to get my damn bachelors. A part of me knew or felt like I had ADD or ADHD, ESPECIALLY since my parents stated that they thought I had autism growing up but didn't think to get me tested since "It didn't affect my school work". Still haven't plucked up the nerve to actually get tested for either, but starting to think I should if only for my own self interest.

You are very brave to try to get one. If only to help you figure out how it made sense to you after all these years. I speak as someone with autism, ADHD, and OCD spectrum. I am not a good student - mostly having low attention span and being interested in something else and...acting out - but mostly got my sh1t together in 9th grade. But yeah. I was diagnosed when I was little, and didn't remember until I talked to my sister, and she told me that I have autism. Suddenly, it made sense after I noticed a few symptoms from a friend I got. But yeah, you are brave enough to get a diagnosis. It can be scary to learn if you are just being lazy or if you really do have ADHD. I hope it goes well for you when you make an appointment.

I had a similar experience, switching my major 2 years in and finishing a 4 year program in 7 years. I actually found out a few years back that my parents got an unofficial diagnosis of me probably having ADD when I was young, but them not really pursuing it further because I was high-functioning enough at the time, and culturally having certain habits and routines helped a lot. Personally, I'm a bit ambivalent of ever actually getting tested now. I know how my brain works, what my blind spots are, and how to compensate after decades of experience, and being easily distracted doesn't *really* impact my day to day life? A medication assist might make my life easier, but who knows? if it's not [critically] broke, then I get the right to decide whether or not to fix it

When I got to my early 30s, it hadn’t been long since i was seeing a psychiatrist Who suggested I have a neurological psychological evaluation done, which was the first my parents and I had ever heard of it. 21:00 this works from the autistic side most likely. It helps eliminate the harsh inertia we call autistic inertia which makes things ridiculously hard to start or be stopped on doing. Getting the ball rollling is the hardest part so turning that engine on often helps out a ton even if its minor, it just has to convince and influence your brain into it.

I myself am on the Autism Spectrum. I was diagnosed at least when I was 4-5 years old in the early 2000's (about 2007-2008) From what family told me, my teachers around that time noticed I was showing traits that were different from my peers. They told my mom about it, she at first didn't make an appointment, just thought I was a hyperactive and shy kid. One day my grandparents were coming home and they heard an ad on the radio talking about ASD, listing the traits, etc. They had realized that I was showing those traits, had told my mom, she then brings me to a doctor. After some time the doctor told her I had Aspergers (Not a different thing, still Autism either way) I am part of the spectrum where I am verbal but will be selective mute when overwhelmed, hyperfixation is art, games, and history. I also have pretty good memory when learning different stuff. It's also funny because I learned a while ago my mom, herself has ADHD. Thank you for showing this video and sharing what you guys have experienced, this helped teach me a little about what my mom could have been through before she had me :)

Hot damn… after hearing your stories about college, I feel blessed that I only run into one teacher I really despised really early (and in my worst subject, history, so I didn’t even sting that much when he insulted us). Honestly, most of the pushback I got was from a few churchgoers (specifically a deacon I was friends with) who thought my choice of an art/animation major might not be the wisest choice. I mean… with the state of animation today, he’s right! But back then, I felt much more secure, especially since I had a few connections (one of those church friends was buddies with Dee Bradley Baker, and a high-school peer had an in with Cartoon Network Studios so I got to tour and they showed me how to apply) I’m on the autism spectrum too and bipolar depression hits like a truck, but my school time felt way more miserable than my college time (even if my school grades were better, if only because college I felt like I could pace myself and most teachers were neat).

As someone who suffers from the combined type Adhd and did not realize until well into adulthood. Why I was constantly in trouble at school for lack of impulse control and also not paying attention, eloping, reading and even at home for the same things. I was having full breakdowns at home in my 30s about feeling like a failure who is to stupid to do anything. Then my mum finally brought to my attention that both my kindergarten and 1st grade teacher told my mum that they thought I could have adhd and that's why I'm struggling. Yeah she decided for me nope and never even told me. I also suspect that i could be on the spectrum as well from other struggles but oh American medical system that is likely never going to be diagnosed.

A the one notebook per subject vs one notebook for everything. as a kid we were encouraged to have different notebooks for different classes. but as we got older, I discovered that I never looked at my notes later anyway, so I ended up using one notebook for everything, if I actually wrote something that I needed for later, I would just rip the page out, and put it in a folder that I also had (We also got so many loose papers from teachers, so the folder was needed anyway). Mostly, I got through school based on the work I did in class, I never did anything at home, the only preperation I did for tests was the small break before class started.

15:24 i honestly dont mind my autism. sure its really fucking hard to socialize irl sometimes, but its way easier for me to socialize with people that have nearly the exact same interests as me (especially now that I'm in college). I might be hella shy and socially awkward, but man am I good at art. I honestly think that my above-average skills in art and animation might be related to my autism considering it was my special interest (animation more so than anything else), especially with my good sense of spatial awareness, to be completely honest. Though, and unfortunately, thanks to my autism, not only am I just absolutely horrible at lying, I tend to be extremely straightforward with my answers (especially in situations where lying would benefit me, but to me, lying just doesn't feel right and sometimes it feels like the guilt of lying to someone would catch up to me and I would just want to out myself sooner than never telling them my actual thoughts). Ik not everyone on the spectrum is like this, but that's how it's like fo rme.

omg the Gundam thing lol.... i have the RG Wing Gundam half completed for over a year now, my fiancé has now started calling its leggy because i have the legs and torso built and just sitting there next to my first completed MG Gundam which i super went hard on. Im like well i need to clean my desk so i have room to work. well if i am going to clean my desk i need more storage before i can clean my desk. (WEEEEEEEEEE FUN times with ADHD) As for tips honest if possible work with a consoler... i am in my late 40's now work a great job but super straining for ADHD, about 3 or 4 years ago i was re-diagnosed when was trying to figure out why i couldn't control my eating and extreme levels of stress. I was originally diagnosed when i screwed up in the ARMY back in 2003. Lets just say a lot had changed about our understanding on processes and ways to handle ADHD. According to my counselor / dr they said i had managed to mask my ADHD extremely well the issue was i also ended up increasing my stress to the point that i would be sent to the hospital for blood pressure multiple times for fear that the people checking my pressure thought i was having a heart attack. In the end i use a combination of medication, try to set up healthier accountability mechanisms, ie setting deadlines on work that can be enforced in some way, mutli layer reminders ie have multiple reminders for tasks so its harder to ignore. realize if you cant engage on a task step away for a little bit then try and come back later, this is why i also do multiple reminders so if i step away and forget another remind pops up and beeps at me. Also reminders from multiple system, ie phone, compute, notes in places. My old method of accountability that was unhealthy was i would tell myself if i screwed up my son and his mom would suffer and she would get sick again because i was not able to provide the money to help them live. Basically like putting a mental gun to your own head and use your greatest fear coming true to keep you on track. But again if you can afford it get professional help. If you cant afford it, having friends around / can talk to when having a hard time and maybe help motivate and keep you accountable to them, and sometimes your just going to have a bad day. Hell even with medication their are just some days i am not productive, normally if i have been under stress for long periods of time they dont work as well. The most basic things you can do honestly which for me are some of the hardest are, eat healthy, exercise, and sleep well. Which i fail at most of those things, honestly when i was very physically active i had a easier time thinking, i still had the symptoms but not as bad as i do now. Most likely the exercise help give you more dopamine and serotonin levels, healthy eating helps regulate chemicals and sleep is when you regenerate chemicals. But again consoling is worth doing and when you do the counseling they will not tell you exactly how to fix it, its going to be a lot of back and forth to tease out what works for you. If you decide medication is the route you decide to go be patient and realize this is trying to adjust brain chemicals, it can be tricky and not all medications work on all people. so it may take a few tries and different dosages to iron out what works best for you as a person. Medication does not always make the noise stop completely, and you will still have to use other techniques as well, but me medicate vs not is defiantly noticeable to the point that my fiancé can spot when i forgot to take my medication and will ask me if i took my medication. And normally 9 time out of 10 she is correct and when its not working and i took it, its normally on days where i am under extreme stress for some length of time. I don't consider the medication to be perfect in any way but it helps with a large portion of the noise in my head, at least enough to be functional 85% of the time. I do use XR, the IR seemed to work better but i would forget to take it more often and so i decided XR was more controllable in my day to day life. Doesn't work as well in the sense of effect but i am much more consistent in my ability to work another things is as life move forward you may need to revisit consolers if your approach stops working because items in your life as well as brain chemistry may change enough that new methods or processes have to be setup that work better with you current life. About 1.5 years ago i had second visit i had with the counselor after my most recent diagnosis was when i ended up getting put into a job position that cause me to have an extremely bad stress reaction to. We had to come up with some new ideas on how best to handle my new responsibilities. The irony of doing well and getting my ADHD in order was i got a promotion at my job which led to more stress and i had to make adjustments to how i handle things. I suspect if i get another promotion i will need to make more adjustments and even possibly adjust medication if it doesn't work as well.
