Incubation and fruiting temps for this oyster grow ranged from 66 to 68 F. Pinning was initiated with a 24 hour cold shock at 40 F at full colonization.

Nice! I've used your method for several batches or oyster, lions mane and shitake. Sounds good, a bit of contamination is all part of the learning curve but you should be able to all but eliminate it with time and experience. Remember, where the contam appears is a very important clue to what caused it. On top only usually means a bad seal or filter membrane contamination. Throughout the jar or bag usually means it rode in on your spawn, LC, or during innoculation/shaking.

Another great video! Just finished up a round of LC jars from your LC video this afternoon. Was also wondering if reusable large wide rubber bands might be another option for the "taping down" of the bag (just before the pinning stage)? If you hydrate them properly in the beginning using the process I show in the video, there is no need to rehydrate them. I just leave them in high humidity with no added moisture and they will produce 3 to 4 flushes no problem. Oysters don't need a soak.

Another awesome vid. I love the commentary with all the tips added in! Question - With your awesome pasteurization tek, do you think it will work in a monotub? Ie mix and pasteurize the hardwood supplemented pellets in the tub, then proceed from there? Or too risky for contams? (or not worth going the monotub route?) Also, any newbie tips on the incubation process? Ie. any specific conditions needed? Or just throw on a shelf? I've watched quite a few of your vids (they are the best imo) but I don't recall you showing your incubation shelves! thnx!
@RenegadeMushrooms
@RenegadeMushrooms Жыл бұрын
You could do the process in a monotub, but monotubs don't work great for most gourmets. Bags or plastic containers work far better imo. Any kind of shelving will work for incubation, but I prefer wire shelving. Just make sure your bags aren't touching to prevent contamination from heat build-up. Normal room temp, 65 F to 70 F is great for incubation. Thank you for the kind words, glad you enjoy the videos 👍

As far as my operation goes, you've already seen it lol. It's basically just me growing in my basement and wandering the woods. I used to have a farm setup, sell to restaurants, etc. but I scaled all that back for now, probably until I retire from my day job anyway. hey bud, thanks for all the great videos they've helped me a lot! Question: have you ever tried doing the oysters without pasteurizing, ive read the fuel pellets go through a high heat extrusion process thats what makes them stick together? meaning just add the water to hydrate and go for it?
@RenegadeMushrooms
@RenegadeMushrooms Жыл бұрын
Fuel pellets do go through a high heat extrusion process. But, this only renders them what I would call "relatively clean". They are far from sterile. That being said, yeah, you could probably just use cold water and go for it and pull it off with an oyster strain with minimal contamination as long as you spawn heavily. I prefer the hot water pasteurization process for two reasons. First, the heat and steam perfectly hydrate the fuel pellets, much more evenly than cold water. Also, the pasteurization process allows me to make these bags with zero contamination for a minimal time investment. I would say try it and see how it goes for you, but if you experience any contamination, skipping the hot water isn't worth it.

So I have my first ever flush going on now with 2 blocks of Blue Oysters. The first block got a little leggy so I increased air exchange and that definitely helped on the 2nd one but on both blocks the center mushrooms caps were semi closed (upwards) kinda looked like coral growing. I harvested the first ones and got a great harvest but what causes that issue? Do you know if this is related to humidity or light or what?
@RenegadeMushrooms
@RenegadeMushrooms Жыл бұрын
It's likely fresh air exchange if they are long and leggy. If they're dry, they will turn brown on the edges and crack. Light is typically not an issue, they need light, but not a lot. It sounds like you still got a nice yield for your first grow. Just keep working with them, you will get it dialed in.

Lastly, What’s your success rate would you say with pasturing instead of sterilizing?
@RenegadeMushrooms
@RenegadeMushrooms Жыл бұрын
Its favorable to spawn heavy with pasteurized substrate for two reasons: boost the nitrogen content of your block/improve yields, and out-race contams. Note that I have videos showing that you can supplement with wheat bran up to 10% and still pasteurize as long as you have a fast strain. Folding the bags would probably be fine, but I prefer to hermetically seal, not much more effort. With this method, and up to 5% wheat bran, my success rates are 100%

@@RenegadeMushrooms So, there's NO soaking, scraping, dunking or spanking? No taping over the old holes and cutting new ones? No resting in higher temps and re-colonizing the block? Is this just because it's an oyster strains or just this one performs like this?😊
@RenegadeMushrooms
@RenegadeMushrooms 3 жыл бұрын
@@scottstevens7569 Most oyster strains will just keep rolling after the first flush until they're exhausted. Sometimes you'll get heavy clusters that are trapped under the plastic of your grow bag, but you just have to cut the plastic away to set them free.

Hey man you don’t need to pasteurise pellets, generally the manufacturing process does it enough. Pretty cool.

Hi. I offer a recipe for the easiest way to grow oyster mushrooms. We need 1.5 kg of straw pellets, 2.5 liters of water, 0.5 kg of mushroom grain seeds. The water can be cold, nothing needs to be pasteurized or sterilized.
@RenegadeMushrooms
@RenegadeMushrooms Жыл бұрын
Cool, maybe I will try your recipe in a video at some point. Nice work 👍

I tried it now, for the first harvest of 1.4 kg of oyster mushrooms. The current growth temperature is 11-12 degrees Celsius. And the straw pellets must be clean, they cannot contain odor absorbers. If you are interested, I would also send some photos of cultivated mushrooms, but to which email? Greetings from Slovakia.

If the bag fully sealed how miselium can breath
@RenegadeMushrooms
@RenegadeMushrooms Жыл бұрын
There is a filter patch in the bag that allows it to breathe without allowing contaminants in. The filter patch allows air exchange until you are ready to fruit your mushrooms.

So what ratio of spawn/substrate was that? 1lb spawn to 2lb substrate? Seems excessive? I must try the pasteurisation method soon, but i use hardwood briquettes, and they expand so much that they would burst the bags!
@RenegadeMushrooms
@RenegadeMushrooms 3 жыл бұрын
I use 1 lb. of grain spawn typically per 6 lb. finished block. That is a very high ratio obviously, but the extra grain boosts the nitrogen content of your block and boosts your yields. This is important because you can't supplement too much with pasteurization. I'm working on some new methods that I think could change that though, stay tuned 👍
@BoroBootBoy

 @Ghost Pipe Mushrooms Thanks for the reply. I never considered the Nitrogen. Look forward to your new methods, as i am always trying new things. Will let you know about my experiments if they ever bear fruit (pun intended).

Why do you have to cut a hole to the bag to let air out? Isn't the filter on the bag just for the reason so air can change with CO2? If not, does it mean you actually don't need to pay much more just to get the filter, when it actually isn't even doing anything?
@RenegadeMushrooms
@RenegadeMushrooms Жыл бұрын
You leave them sealed during incubation and let the filter patch do it's work. You only cut the bag when incubation is complete and you're ready to fruit your mushrooms. At that point, I cut the top corners off to purge the air and tape the bag back tightly on to itself like I show in the video. Then cut X-slits to create areas for the mushrooms to emerge.
@danielalt7508
@danielalt7508 Жыл бұрын
@@RenegadeMushrooms but if air can move through the filter, isn't it just possible to press at the bag, without poking a hole, to remove the air? Or does the filter make a lot of resistance if the bag is just pressed at?

Can't you use soy pellets instead of aspen? What are advantages.
@RenegadeMushrooms
@RenegadeMushrooms 2 жыл бұрын
I've never tried soy pellets with pasteurization, typically they are mixed with sawdust and sterilized. Aspen shavings are a nice additive to sawdust. They give your mycelium something a little bigger to chew on, and can still be pasteurized.
