For real...Batman The Animated series was my LIFE growing up and one of the main reasons why he's my fave DC hero. That show didn't dumb things down too much for the kids so it could get REALLY serious at times. Also the episode where the mad doc turned Catwoman into an ACTUAL catwoman was the first time I had ever heard the poem "Tiger, Tiger Burning Bright" and it made me look it up. Mark Hamil as the Joker was a masterstroke for that series and one of if not the BEST version of the Joker, the ones people remember are Jack Nicholson for the Tim Burton movie and that's only after Mark Hamil..seriously my entire way of laughing was colored by the three Jokers I grew up with: Cesar Romero from the reruns of the Adam West (r.i.p) Batman, Jack Nicholson from the Tim Burton movie, and Mark Hamil from this...toss in some Muttley from Wacky Races and the like for my snickers.

This was the best Batman. It has all the best elements of Frank Miller/Steve Engleheart and Marshall Rogers/Dennis O'Neil and Neal Adams/Bill Finger and Bob Kane Batman (the grittiness, the noir-ish chiaroscuro art, the art deco design, the sense of overwhelming reality even the most unreal of situations), mixed it with just enough of the heart of the Adam West series (it's not campy, but it's definitely not afraid to be humorous at times), and give it all a big heaping helping of heart. These characters felt like real people. The rogues gallery too. It helps that Batman has the most human rogues gallery in comics, but man did they really humanize these characters and made them all understandable. Not necessarily sympathetic, but you understood why each one did what they did. It introduced us to Harley, who has become a staple of the series since. It gave the definitive (and most heartbreaking) origin to Mr. Freeze. And Mark Hamill's Joker is just perfect. He's everything the Joker should be. He does horrible things all while making you life. And then you feel like shit about it afterwards. That's what Joker should be! God I love this series!

I think the problem is less about barabra having a crush on batman/bruce. and more with the issues of batman returning the feelings. in the show I actually really like barb having a crush on batman because he is handsome and cool and its like how people like the mature older guy. or having a crush on a teacher. I respected how open she was with her feelings at times. plus it was always rather funny to see bruce look a little awkward and not knowing what to do. since he probably didn't want to break her heart but he also definitely couldn't return her feelings. with age, her being the daughter of gordan his friend, him liking multiple other people(seriously people act like cat woman is his loislane but batman has a legit rouges gallery of love interests who are about equal in chemistry and possible endgame) all being factors as to why not. the batman thing in the killing joke is creepy because even IF hypothetically batman would have something with batgirl , just on its own the batgirl scenes made the story worst and made both of them look bad. with barbra looking like she was desperate for batman, that she needed his permission or approval to fight crime when she has clearly been fighting crime for years as well at this point. the sex scene came out of nowhere and made bruce weird because he just let her pin him down and went along with the clearly bad idea of having sex with her. after acting like he has any right to ban her from fighting crime or that specific villain when she is a adult with a job. he is friends with her father so since that was also a big focus in the film it made it weird. barb also felt sulky since she was focused on her thing with batman for a large chunk of the movie. bruce looks also emotional stunted because he didn't call or try to communicate properly with her about it afterwards.. like I rather like the parallel with barbs having a thing for older batman and how there was some chemistry but due to the age thing was going to happen. like how robin and batgirl had chemistry but he was younger than her enough that she didn't see him as a serious contended/possibility. and considering that eventually dick aged up enough to get her attention and the age gap started to matter less, it would be interesting if the same happened with bruce. and maybe if they explored that properly. since they clearly know barbs definitely isn't a endgame love interest...I'd prefer if they didn't have sex. but maybe deal with batman dealing with the emotional conflict of realizing he does have some actual attraction to this woman who he had met when she was a teen. what chemistry or similarities they might have. or maybe explore properly why it wouldn't work out between the two, not just with the age. honestly I'd just prefer that even if barbra has feelings for batman, that batman/bruce never returns those feelings and doesn't give her signs to hope. never sleeps with her or anything like that. the influence and power gap between the two is large not just bringing up the age so it makes it a creepy as soon as batman returning feelings or acting on feelings of sexual attraction.

The discussion after about the comic adapation, to me, really encapsulates why there aren't any REALLY good video game movies. The material rarely - if ever - lends itself to other forms of media. To be taken out of the interaction, on whatever level, and forced into spectating what you were originally a part of in some way leads to a kind of dissonance. Not to mention 96% of studios that attempt it utterly crucify their source material, but I digress

I know everybody hates seeing Batman and Batgirl having sex on a rooftop in The Killing Joke movie, but it does shine a light on the kind of relationship they had at one time. There have been other mentions of their relationship in other medias like in Batman Beyond when Terry asked Commissioner Barbara Gordon about her relationship with Bruce, even he said "Woah!" when her learned they were like that. Even in the comics where we learned that Bruce and Barbara had an affair when she was with Dick. She was pregnant with Bruce's baby but had a miscarriage and lost it. Maybe that's why Dick hates Bruce in Titans. A story like that is just screwed up enough to justify him saying "F*** Batman".
