The Cape Wrath Trail - One Amazing Week.

Spent one amazing week solo backpacking and camping on the Cape Wrath Trail. It is considered to be one of the most challenging and difficult long distance backpacking hikes in the UK.
It is an unofficial, unmarked and magnificently challenging route for experienced long-distance backpackers, the Trail passes through some of Scotland's most spectacular landscapes.
However I believe it should be called the Cape Wrath Challenge as it will challenge you both mentally and physically. It will challenge your fitness, mental fortitude, hill skills and gear selection unlike anything you may have done before.
Due to time restraints I had decided to spend 7 days backpacking the Southern Section of the trail with one rest day in the middle. My hike would start from the Corran Ferry crossing and finish up at the small village of Ullapool on the shores of Loch Broom.
This was the last section of the CWT I had still to complete having already walked the northern section southward from the Lighthouse to Ullapool and having to pull out due to blisters last year.
It normally takes 2-3 weeks to cover the 230-miles through the highlands of Scotland. Most will usually start from Fort William and finally ending up at the Cape Wrath lighthouse which is the most north westerly point in the whole of the UK.
The terrain and weather can make travel on the trail difficult day to day and good navigation skills are a must. Many of the sections involves multiple steep ascents and descents which can be difficult, often in remote areas of the highlands with no visible paths or routes.
NB -The content within this film is strictly my personal video of the trip. It is not intended to be used as a guide. Take care and be responsible for your activities. Do your own research, be safe, be prepared and have a great time in the Great Outdoors :)
Day 1 - Corran to Allt na Cruaiche (16 miles)
Day 2 - Allt na Cruaiche to A’ Chuil Bothy (15 miles)
Day 3 - A’ Chuil Bothy to Barrisdale (14 miles)
Day 4 - Barrisdale to Shiel Bridge (16 miles)
Day 5 - Rest Day
Day 6 - Shiel Bridge to Maol Bhuidhe Bothy (16 miles)
Day 7 - Maol Bhuidhe to Kinlochewe (27 miles)
Day 8 - Kinlochewe to Ullapool (23 miles)

Absolutely superb Ray. I’ve done from Fort William to Morvich on the trail so I understand the effort you must have put in to do a 26 miler followed by a 24 miler AND filming at the same time!! Absolutely awe inspiring. Your filming was spot on too. I just wish I’d seen your river crossings but I guess they were maybe too frisky to risk going back and forward given the levels of rainfall you had. I’ll be buying you some coffees shortly. Well deserved 👍

I am a postie from Newcastle and have just experienced the worst rain, ever. Even a bloke who's worked there 30 years said "Aye, that's the wettest one Aa've knaan". But, here I am, bathed and warm and this was recommended and I have had a smile on my face, throughout. Pleased that's not me! My name's Mackay, so this is my forefathers' country. Nee wonder they left! ;) All jokes aside, this looked like a great trip, well worth doing. Beautiful! And, if there is a chance of a sherbet or two, to keep the pecker up, when all is dreich, it looks like it's worth the challenge. One more for my bucket list and well done, pal. Hat's off to you.

Hello there! Nice to see 'you ended what you started'... So to say 😅 What's this, we're getting lazy? 4:31 (Kidding.) Pitching almost on the road... These Scotts... Back to 'our' trusty Access 2 l can see... Nice! I think we have the same overtrousers from Berghaus, they served me well on the CWT and SNT, great choice! The shot at 9:23 made me laugh... To me it looks as if you were in a prison or similar 😄 that 'mains board' right behind you... Great video as always... And well done carrying all the camera gear knowing it'll rain most of the time. If only some of our viewers knew the effort we put in our videos... 😄 Stay safe and hope to see you soon! 😊

Yeh that was along walk to 4.31 section and nowhere to camp that wasn't flooded. Had to take Access as I had sold the Notch and was expecting my new tent but didn't arrive so used the winter setup. Great tent for the space in the bad weather and wish now I hadn't sold my Duomid :( That trip was really hard,both in distance and filming that it has put me off going back out for a while. Wonder why I put myself through the filming at times when many can just wave a GoPro about so much it nearly makes you sick watching. Yet get x5 more views and subscribers. Really thinking hard at moment direction I plan to go on ;) Atb

@@RS.Outdoors I almost missed my Access 2 on my Nordkalottleden adventure. Psychologically, there is a big difference between getting into the Access 2 or the Duomid. To me, the Access 2 is a lot cosier... I can't believe l'm just reading that second part of your comment tonight. l was talking with a friend, a Berkeley alumni graduated on Computer Science (a tech guy). l gave him access to my channel to assess the stats and his conclusion is simple: make shorter videos (l can send you an email if you think that my help and tell you more in depth). It was already hard to cut my Kungsleden video into chapters, yet he suggested me to cut the chapters again into half (!). Basically, if you want to succeed in YT, you got to feed the algorythm (you already know this). The algorythm doesn't 'see' the difference between the image quality of our heavy Nikon cameras and a feather-light GoPro... l don't know about you, but l start to believe l'm in the wrong platform 😕 Check out the views of my WHW video and tell me about quality VS views! 😂 Anyway... l'm sure you'll become more and more successful in time. 'Time' is a powerful variable in YT, as well. But yes, l 100% understand and share your opinion. Congrats for the CWT video! It's a pleasure to watch! And don't get discouraged, your content is GREAT! 🤩

@@RS.Outdoors I think it’s single skin though so I’m not keen for our weather. I know some people are happy with tents like the ZPacks Duplex, but doesn’t appeal to me. If you get a humid night with heavy rain, it’s difficult to avoid getting sprayed with condensation.

Nice vid. Great shots and editing, little touches like the look at the building at 30:18 give me some inspiration to pay a little more mind to what I'm doing :-) Also - the mental fortitude to keep going with the walk past/walk to shots when you're already goosed... I fully appreciate why you took the choice to slow your speech down a few months ago, but I kinda want speed it up again lol Anyway - great work with this, maybe one day...

G"day ray. Have you tried using a 60 watt folding solar panel to charge up thevbattery bank while you are hiking ?. attatch it to the top of your backpack. have one battery bank on charge and use the other then swap them over. it wont take much to charge them battery banks up. Do you have plans at some stage to complete the hike ?. One thing i learned when i was a lot younger when i first started hiking, is when you start on a hike you should finnish the hike on foot, then its a throu hike. I hope you do so some time in the futer. Iam still getting my gear together. hopefullly after ester it will be cooler then as well hear in Australia then i hope to start hiking. Gerard.

Hi Ray. What's the difference between the MSR Access 2 and the Hubba Hubba NX? I know that the Access 2 is a 4 season and the Hubba is a 3 season, but how does that present itself in terms of spec? I've got the MSR Hubba NX one man tent and was wondering if it would be sufficient for the Cape Wrath Trail?
@RS.Outdoors
@RS.Outdoors Жыл бұрын
The Access 2 has less mesh with only a couple of triangles of mesh at the top of the doors. this is to keep the interior a little bit warmer in cold weather. It also has an extra centre pole that wraps over to keep the middle of the tent a little bit stronger in winds. Lastly it has a few more guy points again to help in windy weather. The Hubba I feel aould be ok as long as the weather is not too wild and you pitch it sheltered. Haze outdoors done the walk with one of those Chinese Lanshan 2 tents and survived to tell the tale. Really depends on time of year and weather. Atb
