There is no way I could do 6 nights in the Highlands with a decidedly wet & tad breezy forecast packing only the gear folk who have very obviously spent 0 time here in winter give as shakedown alternatives.. in fact I'd pay good money to see some of them try it 🤣 yes my pack may be 2lbs heavier than they take but by gawds ill be warm, have dry socks each day & can stop and make hot chocolate anytime the weather starts to get me puggled.

Joe from the USA. Enjoying your videos. I use the befree as well. The reason it clogs up is because minerals in the tubes crystallize. Soak it for 24 hours in a 10% bleach solution and that will fix the flow problem. Also when you clean it after trips use distilled water instead of tap water.

Thanks a lot for this tip Joe Hikes. I really love the Kadadyn BeFree filters and have bought more than one replacement filter in my time using them, I had come to accept the eventual slow filter rate and had two old filters which I had written off. Your explanation on why the filter clogs up and recommendation to soak is the first solution that I have found (of many that I have tried) to actually work. I was not keen to use bleach, so informed that the answer was to soak in a dilute solution I found a tip to use 10% malt vinegar solution instead, which worked a treat. Thanks a lot for the info.

Do you always use the inner with the duomid? I can understand it for the midges? But when they're not out why not save the weight?
@RS.Outdoors
@RS.Outdoors 4 жыл бұрын
@@doctorfeelgood4819 Because of the gap along the outside of the tent. If you have a 6" gap around the perimeter the wind can blow through and you will feel it chill you. For the sake of a few hundred grams the inner cuts this down and keeps you warmer. This is more important in the winter as the inner nest increases the temp inside the tent a few degrees and keeps the biting chill off. Just my preference and my own comfort levels. Many like to not use an inner but I like a little bit of comfort. atb

Not sure on really long durability but you will get years and years out of it if well looked after. I have rolled mine up as it makes easier for packing. Best tent material as it doesn't absorb water, Doesn't sag when wet, stays tight and also doesn't flap like silnylon in high winds. One downside is in heavy rain they can be a bit noisier due to tight structure but if anything it helps me get to sleep. Always felt more secure in my Dcf Duomid than any other tent I have owned. Atb

Great video Ray. Interesting that you're sticking with the Katadyn water filter despite being disappointed in its lifespan. Is it the flow rate you like (I understand it's better than a Sawyer). Also, isn't the cap proprietary, restricting its use to (not exactly cheap) Katadyn bottles rather decanting into a standard water bottle?

Its the flow rate I do like. With the bottle high up on the strap I just need to flick up the sports cap cover and can drink whilst walking and don't need to remove it. Great video Ray. Regarding the ME Jacket, how do you find the fit, true to other ME jackets? Also have you had the chance to test it in multi wet days with a pack? I have a Lhotse but for a winter CWT trip I would love the idea of shakedry jacket that does not wet out. I have read that some people have experienced wetting out under the rucksack straps (not sweating).

Not sure on sizing as never had an ME jacket before. I am 5'10" and average size with podge ;) and large fits great. Have worn it for long days on CWT over few days and never had issue with it wetting out. No issue so far either with rucksack straps and to be honest cant see how it would wet out due to rubber coating. Atb

Thanks for the review. I bought a propeller jacket a few days ago. Haven't had much chance to test it yet because of lack of rain and I live in the lake district! Has your pack caused any wear on the jacket, I have read some concerns about that, although M.E. do describe it as suitable for wearing with a pack.

So far not had any issues as yet but to be honest. But not worn it a great deal as I have not been out in the rain much. Atb

Some of the kit I have is expensive, but you can find alternatives that don't break the bank. Seen people use a Frog Toggs jacket as it is lightweight and very cheap. Do some searches for it on YT. Atb

Another informative vlog Ray cheers👍 I've been meaning to ask for a while where you managed to source the Mld duomid? I've been looking seriously at getting one having done a lot of research and comparisons with other lightweight tents, but seems when looking I can only buy it direct from the US.

I manged to source it from the UK MLD Facebook group when somebody was selling it. The only reason i got it as I also wasn't keen on buying from the US. Atb

Good vid- what’s the biggest and best rucksack you have used in the winter?
@RS.Outdoors
@RS.Outdoors 4 жыл бұрын
Have been using the Osprey Kestrel 58 as it is a bit more rugged for putting items in such as crampons and carrying my ice axe, etc. But it is a fair weight at 1.75kg so going to see if I can use this new rucksack during the winter. If not then my Kestral will be used over the winter. Atb

Is 42-liter the smallest pack, within reason, that you can use, excluding camera gear? Does the 42-liter capacity include the outer pockets?
@RS.Outdoors
@RS.Outdoors 4 жыл бұрын
People carry less and lighter gear than this and also lot smaller rucksacks. For me this is ideal for what I carry. The capacity is for the internals and zip pocket section. Side pockets not included in calculation. Atb

Hi Ray, thanks for another really useful video, you’ve already helped me select some of my gear for getting started this year :) Do you use your Spark Sp3 sleeping bag in Scotland in the summer as well, or just in the autumn? Hope the feet have recovered by now. Thanks for all the great videos.

I got it for the cape wrath trail and has been good so far in summer. Even in summer a lot of the Scottish mountain tops can be very chilly and it has worked well. With the 3/4 zip I can use as a quilt if too hot. Have a bit of a game plan with it as well for the winter that may let me use it all year. That idea will get tested once the snow arrives. Atb
