A. Gallo also makes a Dragon's Blood. They are based in Italy but some colors, including DB, are available from Jackson's.

Hi Jay - I have just started to build my Renesans palette with the pan colors. They are only available in the states from an Etsy seller. These paints do reset beautifully as they have honey as a binder. The colors are lovely (except for the Caput Mortum - way too purple). I also picked up some tubes of the Intense Colors. I have not done a complete painting as yet...soon. Thank you!

interesting range of paints! I think I'll give some colours a try someday.

The colors are beautiful, but some of the colors are just kind of off and not what you would typically think of. Either way, they're beautiful in their own right. Thanks for swatching these out. Have a great day

They are definitely different than tubes and usually they are better - you avoid binder separation and shiny glow after the dryout.

I have some of both their half pans and tubes and I'm going to double check my Caput Mortum now to make sure about it

I have a set of 20 colours I chose myself, most of your top row is different to mine, but I have nearly all of the others except the gold and silver. I like them very much to use, mainly for notebook work, they are easy to use and behave well. My caput mortuum is very different to yours a deep semi opaque brownish red that leans towards purple rather than the one you have. I love the cobalt pigments for botanical subjects, it is a favourite palette that I do not feel precious about which makes it very usable. They are not easy to find, but I never regretted purchasing them. It is interesting to see your set, they are as far as I know identical to the Zecchi range which are far better known. Some strange names, but if you do not mind mixes pigments then they are lovely. I am not a purist like that, rarely make mud anyway, so it really does not bother me. Their chromium oxide green in a mix with white gives really beautiful and very natural pales for use in botanicals. Their current range of half pans online seems rather reduced if my memory is right, pretty sure I had a Naples yellow that is no longer there and maybe a couple of others too.

Hey Nathan, I can confirm too that that's not how Caput Mortuum should be like, looks more like the manganese/mineral violet..
@JayNathanWatercolor Жыл бұрын
It's a strange one. Not sure why it's that colour.

Thank you. I definitely would give it a miss on raw sienna. 😱

Thank you Jay. I have just a handful of half pans in this brand. They're really nice for the price. I wonder if Caput Mortum was mislabeled.

I have the Caput mortum pan (49) and it is just as purple as the one he was sent.
@deeniefirebird Жыл бұрын
A lot of their colours are way off. I have the 48 set, the Raw Sienna looks more like Burnt Sienna, the Burnt Sienna is closer to being English Red and my Caput Mortuum resembles a Quin Violet. I also found that all the earth tone pans I received were only just over half full. The paints are okay to use but I have found it best to ignore the colour names, particularly if you're used to using professional quality paints of other brands. Must admit I was rather irked about the Caput Mortuum though, it's usually one of my favourite colours.

I did side by side comparison of Raw Sienna with Daniel Smith and they are comparable. In many brands yellow ochre and raw sienna are too similar so I appreciate the more distinct difference. Regarding the other colors you mentioned, I agree.

If you compare the Caput Mortum of mostly all the other paint companies to this one, they're more or less the same wine/brown color, while this one is so purple that I don't know what made them give it the same name. But I enjoyed your video non the less as I enjoy all your videos- thank you! 😄🤗💖🧑🎨

I also think this one is undoubtedly not a caput mortuum. Same as perylene violet in tubes - has nothing to do with perylene violet.

I purchased the pans and tubes. Like the paints. My pans however were not filled full in most of them. How were yours?
@JayNathanWatercolor Жыл бұрын
I don’t remember mine being noticeably under filled but I’ve used them quite a bit now so can’t double check.

I have their caput mortum and it looks very different to yours. Its a purple leaning brown. Way more natural/desaturated than your half pan... did they change the formula? Or is it a quality control issue? Either way bit sad. I love my renesans but havent bought more in a few years
@JayNathanWatercolor Жыл бұрын
That's very interesting. I'll have to double check it. 🙏
@sallygreenfield6991 Жыл бұрын
@@JayNathanWatercolor Yes, I also have it and it does not look like that. I suspect yours is straight dioxazine violet (which is PV23 alone, I think). Perhaps a labeling or manufacturing error?
@deeniefirebird Жыл бұрын
@@sallygreenfield6991 Sadly it's not a one -off though, my Renesans Caput Mortuum looks like Quin Violet of other brands.

Mine if different too, and exactly as you describe it. This looks like a labelling mistake….

Same here. In my 48 set only a few of the primaries had a decent fill level and all the earth tones were only half full.
