The hilarious thing about this whole saga is the way Byakuya is built up as Ichigo’s main enemy, you’d think he was the most powerful captain when in reality, Yamamoto could easily solo Ichigo, his friends, and every single soul reaper present at once if he went all out. That’s also not even getting into the fact that Shunsui and Gin had bankais WAY deadlier than Byakuya’s. There’s also the fact that Aizen was still lurking about, Kenpachi hadn’t released his full potential (2 hands), and Unohana could wreck Kenpachi with zero effort.

Exactly. Because some weirdness was going on what with the whole Aizen thing, a lot of more powerful Captains had to lay low and allow other Captains to deal with Ichigo and the other ryoka. And I never count Unohana and Kenpachi because I consider their type of mentor/student relationship both unique and fascinating.

Had Ichigo actually thrown down for real with Yamamoto, Shunsui, Jūshirō, Soi Fon, Gin (if he took the fight seriously), Tosen, and/or Unohana (if allowed to fight)…The arc would be A LOT shorter.

It does fit the theme, though. Bigger doesn't always mean better with a bankai and with Ichigo, Byakuya deduced in their final fight that the smaller bankai essentially condenses the Spiritual Pressure of the wielder. We know Zanpakuto can change, especially after being broken and remended, so it made sense to me when I saw Renji's redesigned, smaller bankai reflecting a principle similar to Ichigo's, where it's smaller but actually it's an improved and more balanced form.

I feel like Renji was still overwhelmed. I did like how he managed to bring Byakuya down to one knee, it is only because Byakuya was caught off guard and not used to his Bankai. It was new to him. Nonetheless, i will acknowledge his effort, but it was an impressive feat. Realistically, Byakuya didn’t need to use his Bankai he already had him subdued with his kido it was a wrap then. But this is just my humble opinion

However, should he reach Bankai level, he would theoretically be as powerful as Old Man Yama. Of course, if his power went up, he would require himself to wear more spirit energy sealing patches so that Yachiru can handle it. Also, as you know, the patch is for fighting purposes. When Old Man Yama used his normal spirit energy level, he nearly crushed Nanao(Squad 8 Lieutenant).
