!! so Renjun is from one of China’s 56 ethnic groups called Chaoxianzu (people whose ancestors were Koreans that migrated to china a long time ago; the history chaoxianzu is a bit complicated to explain but it goes all the way back to the Qing dynasty era). He attended a dual language school learning both kr and Chinese. The Korean language that Chaoxiaozu uses has become unique to itself through time so It has many many differences to the standard kr language spoken in sk today (e.g pronunciations, English loanwords etc). Idk a lot about his history with Korean but it’s super impressive that he is able to speak Korean to his fluency if his only connection to the language prior to going to Korea was his grandmother. I’ve seen a lot of kids who have been basically singlehandedly raised by their grandparents that don’t speak English (dominant language in the US), but still are unable to express themselves past a beginner level in their grandmother’s tongue. They’ll understand, for example, Spanish but would be unable to actually speak it since they would just respond in English. It’s really interesting that he clearly spoke to his grandmother in Korean even though his surroundings didn’t prioritize Korean, which is something most kids aren’t encouraged to do and end up falling back on whats “easy.”

nobody in the comments has mentioned this so far, so i will: renjun is part of an ethnic minority in China: Chaoxianzu. These are the descendants of ethnic Koreans who migrated into China anywhere from 645 CE to now. renjun grew up bilingual in a Chinese province just North of North Korea (which is why there were speculations he was north korean around his debut bc his korean accent aligned more with north korea than south korea) and he went to a school for Chaoxianzu children (hence the pictures of little renjun in a hanbok). there is a bit of a tricky history with south korea and the chaoxianzu people labelling themselves as korean, as they aren’t really korean: they’re a chinese minority with korean blood, they celebrate both korean and chinese parts of culture. I would be careful about calling him more “korean” than other members because of this. his chaoxianzu heritage is very beautiful and a part of him, and we should respect that he would know different korean media and knowledge than his south korean members and Chenle (who is literally from one of the largest chinese cities).
@xzzkat3 жыл бұрын
I’m not sure what you mean by their ‘accent’ aligns more with NK. The Korean language that Chaoxiaozu uses has become unique to itself through time. It is influenced by both the standard language of South Korea and NK, and has Chinese characteristics at the same time. Also that rumour was spread with malicious intent so I wouldn’t say that’s the reason because it’s not :/
@xzzkat3 жыл бұрын
Also just fyi, Korean immigrants who move from Korea to China now are not considered a part of Chaoxianzu, they’re just immigrants 😭
@cielo20073 жыл бұрын
Ooh so he’s Chinese but with Korean blood? So like his ancestors came from Korea but as they lived in China where they had kids with full Chinese people so that would be why he’s Chinese and not Korean? He’s a Chinese person but with some Korean blood? That’s cool I think I can kinda understand because my step dad is Mexican (so am I) but he’s a different type of Mexican because he has some asian blood in him but he’s Mexican it’s just his type of Mexican is a descendant of asians (not sure which ones) but he’s Mexican
@user-fl7el5nf9t3 жыл бұрын
So basically lots of people immigrated to China from Korea during Japanese occupation to avoid persecution so the history is not that long (It depends but normally early 1900). On top of that, their accent is apparently more related to North Korean accent rather than South due to geographical reason. I don’t know if he is fully JoseonJok(Korean Chinese) but that’s why he is way more familiar with Korean language and culture. He is just in minority group in China so his nationality is China.
@xzzkat3 жыл бұрын
@@user-fl7el5nf9t noo the history of Chaoxianzu goes way back to the Qing Dynasty era or even before. Yes, many Koreans did immigrate to China during the Japanese occupation but that’s not the origin of Chaoxianzu.
@florabellegrim63673 жыл бұрын
RenJun speaks Korean and knows the korean language and korean culture even before he moved to South Korea and even before SM recruited him... His from Jilin province of China which is where the majority of Chaoxianzu resides, their a Korean ethic group or Chinese minority group from Korean descent that's been living there in Jilin province of China for a couple hundred years, their considered Chinese nationals or Chinese citizens but with Korean ancestry or roots and because of this they were able to preserve their Korean culture and korean language even though they've been residing in China for hundreds of years.. Hence the explanation of RenJun saying that he grew up with his grandmother that's why he speaks old Korean, which is kind of similar to the North Korean dialect but not the same... Thats why out of the foreign members of NCT, RenJun was the most fluent in Hangul/korean language even during debut years..

as a person who speaks mandarin, renjun is right though. when a word with a fourth tone is followed by another fourth tone, the tone of the first word will change to the second one. great example of this the word ‘goodbye’ or ‘zài jiàn’ in pinyin. when you spell it they are both in fourth tone but when you say the word it becomes ‘zái jiàn’ plus it makes it look weird saying both syllables in fourth tone sequentially as they are both pronounced forcefully down(?)

The reason why he is good at Korean and knows about Korean culture is because he is Joseon-jok. Joseon-jok is a Chinese with Korean blood They are Chinese, but they speak Korean

WAIT THAT'S MARRY YOU AS THE ENDING CARD SONG ;; BLESS YOU Renjun bouncing between being super competent in Korean and messing up in Korean is bilingual culture tbh. Honestly, the fact that he knows all of these old songs is kind of amazing, and I didn't know that Renjun sung Love Battery before. ;; Hong Jinyoung is my favourite trot artist, and I got so happy when I heard Jeno sing "Thumbs Up" before, so I'm glad to be receiving these crumbs.

3:25 Please can someone tell him to cover the whole song? The tiny bit he sang was just purely angelic and I wanna listen to it all the time 😭

isn't Renjun like ethnically Korean too? I heard way back pre-debut that the area he lives in has a lot of ethnically Korean people (usually from North Korea over the border) and could explain why his grandma's Korean is old/dialectical

so Renjun is from one of China’s 56 ethnic groups called Chaoxianzu (people whose ancestors were Koreans that migrated to china a long time ago; the history chaoxianzu is a bit complicated to explain but it goes all the way back to the Qing dynasty era). He attended a dual language school learning both kr and Chinese. The Korean language that Chaoxiaozu uses has become unique to itself through time so It has many many differences to the standard kr language spoken in sk today (e.g pronunciations, English loanwords etc). Thus, he had to relearn a lot of those things which was very difficult and he talked about it on his radio show. Hopefully, this explains why he’s familiar with many of the old school korean tv shows and songs :)

When I first watched nct dream I thought all of them are Korean. I speak Chinese and understand Korean. I was surprised that Renjun is Chinese because he literally doesn't have any Chinese accent in his Korean and he speaks really fluently.
