Great insights you guys. A few thoughts: Offer to save the buyer some time. Ask them what specific questions they have while they are on the phone (before visiting). Ask them if they’d like an additional overview of the car and any work done on before they come see it. Ask them if they’ve reviewed the CarFax. Ask them how familiar they are with this particular model. Be upfront that you are asking a fair price but that you do have a LITTLE room for flexibility (this sends a no-low-ball warning). Put yourselves in the shoes of the buyer (something you two love to do). Try to pre-answer the same questions you’d be asking. My favorites: How many keys does the car have? Are all the manuals included? When were the serpentine belt, plugs, coils, brakes, coolant, oil or clutch last done? Receipts? Who has serviced the car? Do you have a DME report - anything noteworthy? Any cosmetic only paintwork that wouldn’t show-up on a CarFax? Any mods? Did you keep the factory parts? What number owner are you? Is there anything that currently needs to be done to the car? What are the date codes and brand of the tires? How has the car been driven - weekends, daily, autocross, track? Why are you selling it? On a scale of 1-10 how would the seller rate the car? Other pro tips for selling a car: Do your own PPI to share with a prospective buyer. (You only have to do it once and then it’s available to many buyers - saves you time). If you know the quirks of the car then be prepared to address the questions (example: headliners in a 987 Cayman, door cards in a 981/991, etc.). Run the VIN # on VINanalytics.com and provide the build sheet. I do all this for cars I’ve personally sold to friends and I’ve never had a complaint. I also do this for cars I’m considering buying. I don’t sell a ton of cars (I prefer to keep them), but I tend to treat the buyer the same way I’d want to be treated if I was buying. Final note: Don’t put up with any BS or sob stories. Life is too short.

Great episode. I've never maximized my outcomes (buying or selling) as I've never bought or sold a car privately. I don't have the patience. (It's a hassle enough to sell crap on Ebay) This video makes me feel better on taking the "L" on buy/sell price to save myself unwanted aggravation.
@Synchromesh1233 ай бұрын
Good story, although a little stretched. One thing to do after you shake hands initially is to take a non-refundable deposit, preferably in cash. That seems to make buyers a lot more eager to come back and finish the transaction. If you don't, things mentioned in the video happen. To me the car is not sold until I have a deposit in my hand.

I use a company in Orlando owned by a couple friends who are Porsche enthusiasts. When I’m ready to sell a car, Oliver at Millenium motors charges a very fair fee, which I’m happy to pay in order to avoid the issues brought up in this video. He even alerted me to an under market value Boxster S in mint condition with low miles and the IMS fixed done. I wasn’t in the market for another car, but that one was such a cream puff, a very reasonable price that I had to grab it.

Some good advice given to me years ago - Find a local Indy (that you can pay a couple hundo’s) that will allow you to drive to, each time you want to show / attempt-to-sell your car from. I do not allow anyone to know where I (or the car lives) until we sign the title & Bill of Sale.

Great video and selling a Porsche is getting more interesting for sure as the car guy level in general is going down. Understanding and vetting your buyer is paramount will save you a lot of time.

Exactly. Just had this expereince. Sold my 718GTS , and people are so so so picky and want a “discount” because of this rock chip, this scuff mark, this mark in the seat, this mark here this mark there …. It’s a 6 year old car. If you want perfect, buy new. Blows my mind
@iOSAT2 ай бұрын
Yeah frankly PCA buyers are some of the worst simply due to the fact that most think they’re smarter than they are, and they get worse the more “competitively” priced your car is listed.
@amac84872 ай бұрын
@@iOSATexactly. Lots and lots of window shoppers. They’re the same people that if they do buy it, they never drive it because it was honestly too expensive for their comfort zone and they baby it to the point it never gets used in fear or f “ruining it”. Everyone thinks their car is worth more than it is due to sentimental reasons. I get it. I really do. But people need to be realistic.

I despise selling cars (and motorcycles) to the point that I now first think about having to sell them before I actually buy them. That has stopped a lot of my impulse buying/collecting over the past few years, which is probably a good thing. If I do sell something though, the minute the "buyer" starts to pick apart the vehicle, they're done. I would never sell something I love to someone who's acting like they don't like it... "This isn't the car for you, goodbye". 👋

Selling a car is such a PITA! On the flip side I seriously wish I could locate individuals that care for their vehicles as much as I do, but it appears to be a rarity anymore which ultimately forces me to order and purchase new.

I had a seller pull out of deal the day it was going to happen with an air cooled a couple years ago. Checked the car out, test drive completed, agreed on a price , PPI performed and Cashier's Check ready to go. A hour or so before we hit the road to go pick it up, he called to let me know he could not go through with it. His wife had to get involved to a least get what I paid for the PPI back. It was a Craigslist ad.

I am typing as I listen so my story may be similar to yours… I was selling my 997 C2 I had a guy contact me right away he had a different name on market place than he told me so right away I called him out on that. Anyway he wanted to see it but he was on holidays, he gets back from holidays he was coming to see it on the weekend.. of course he never showed. A week later he wants to come see it again, he wants to bring his kid and his mechanic. I said for sure bring everyone you want, tells me he will be at my house at 5pm, showed up at 6:45 whatever. Goes over the car with a fine tooth comb nit picks a couple minor things but the car is mint. Turns out his mechanic is actually an HD mechanic that has never worked on a Porsche before, whatever I have no concerns with the car. So he wants to go for a test drive, I said sure you and I can go then I’ll take your mechanic if he wants to go. Oh we all can’t go at once? Side note his mechanic is about 320lbs and I doubt he will fit on the car at all. Anyway I stick to my guns and say no to the kids and the kids seat in the back. Anyway him and I go for ride I let him drive all goes well, I think he is a buyer so we come back I tell the mechanic he can drive it as well I am sure the car is sold already. The mechanic drives it, he had no poker face he loves it I start to think he might buy it the mechanic tells me it’s the nicest one they have saw by far. It’s nice and tight he said the it’s $10,000 more than the other one they looked at but if you spent $10,000 on that car it’s still not going to be as nice as mine. So we come back, he nit picks a couple small things on the car like a wrinkle in the paint protection film crap like that. So we make a deal he is coming back tomorrow with cash. I didn’t take a deposit because he either comes back or he doesn’t I don’t really care. So the next day he sends me a long winded text about his buddy that owns 20 Porsches and he thinks that in 5 years he will have trouble getting all of his money back out of the car so he offers $10,000 less than we agreed upon because that way if he moves back to Germany in 5 years he won’t lose any money…. I said your buddy thinks it will still be worth that 5 years from now? Well now that I think about it I’ll drive it another 5 years and sell it for that myself I might as well enjoy it for 5 more years if you’re offering me that and it’s still worth the same money. Sorry long winded but who makes a deal then the next day decides it’s worth $10,000 less.

I hate selling cars!!!! Now, I’m a hobbyist with a significant collection of cars. I’ve bought and sold many cars and it seems of late, buyers have become impossible to deal with. From the 50% of asking low ball offers or the self educated experts who don’t know anything other than what they read on the drive over. Does it have original miles? No, they are aftermarket miles that I bought on line…. The car I was selling was an original paint, family owned since new example with full documentation since new….and the guy looking at the car insisted it was not original and it must have been repainted because the color was “OFF”….. It was a BLACK car…. Another guy asked if it was all original…. I said no… the battery, tires, tuneup parts and brakes have been changed. The car had 50 thousand miles on it…. He said OH, so it’s NOT ALL ORIGINAL….that’s points off…. Oh I can go on for ever…

Also, if the guy was such a time waster/scammer why not name names? You’d be doing the community a favor. Lastly, strange choice of title. I’m sure most would agree that when it comes to auto transactions, the selling party is the side that is doing the vast majority of the lying.
