A little look around Reno in 1990, you can see some of the old casinos in view during that period.

So many memories. August 13, 1990 in Reno. This would have been right around Hot August Nights and a few weeks before the Balloon Races. This would have been exactly 32 days before I met the mother of my kids and fell embarrassingly in love for the first time. I just just picture the person filming this, balancing one of those briefcase-sized VHS camcorders on his shoulder like he's a field news cameraman. heh. I really wish Reno hadn't changed from this time. You could still get a job and raise a family and buy an affordable home back then. It still had that small city feel, large enough to have just about anything you wanted, but small enough that even our rush hour traffic only lasted five minutes. Now it's unrecognizable as the quaint city in this video.

We came up in 89 for HAN and that set a series of events in motion that made us frequent visitors, then residents a few years later. Because of car trouble and because we had our new pup, we walked from Gentry/Virginia to Wells/9th a couple times that weekend. So, yes, I remember downtown this way.

That parking lot was for Mayfair Market only!! Had a brand Acura legend in '86! About 4 months old. Came up from Thousand Oaks Ca To visit my cousin and parked in that lot at about 11 pm & we went into The El Dorado to play slots and came out 2AM and there was a boot on my front tire! Never seen one before. It took over 2 hours and many $$$ to get off! Lucky we won some money to help pay the bill. In '93 me and the wife moved up & are still here. Pretty great town then. Now to many cars and people!

That supermarket between Eldorado and Circus Circus was torn down for the Silver Legacy. Opened in 1995. Railroad tracks between Fitzgerald and Eldorado is now underground. Fitzgerald is now non gambling. Turned to the Whitney Peak Hotel. Harold's Club became Harrah's. Then closed in 2018. Apartments to open in 2024?? The Sundowner became residential timeshares. The Mapes was demolished in 2000. It's become a city square in from of city hall. The Virginia Street Bridge over the Truckee River was demolished in 2017. Rebuilt to look Deco-ish. The Bowling stadium and old city bus terminal on Center Street were built around 2000's. Only to sit almost dyfuct.

Once table games were opened up and differences between Class II and Class III slots were blurred for the tribal casinos the end started rolling for Reno. There was no way in hell that Reno was going to rebrand itself as "northern Las Vegas" as the big corporations were NOT going for it and thus we have the abandoned downtown Reno with the remaining 3 Circus Circus and Eldorado and Silver Legacy are entirely "walled off" from the sidewalks and how long will Cal-Neva hold out....... Downtown Reno is truly an abandoned downtown today.

One is always aware, in that Virginia Street/Downtowne area when visiting today; of faded glory. Almost a ghost town now, it's so obvious that this was once a bustling hub of activity. I never got to see it in it's "good ole daze" period. At least vids like this can be a testament of what this place was.
@danc1197 Жыл бұрын
Legalized gambling in California is what put these Nevada casinos under. Most of the tourists came from California since it's just a short drive away. Now nobody has any reason to travel to these slums when the local casinos are much newer and nicer and not surrounded by bad neighborhoods. Most of them are in outlying areas with no neighboring businesses.

Did el Dorado connect with circus circus and silver legacy back then?
@shirleytyree2762 жыл бұрын
TheMiguel... no, it didn't. In Jan 1997 there was a terrible flood in downtown Reno, causing all sorts of destruction and damage. In those days you could walk out of one casino at night, cross the street and walk right into another casino. It was an awesome feeling when you were there at night. Because you would be having such a great time in the casino, and then you went outside to go down the street or across the street to the next, you would be hit with amazing fresh mountain Air and be able to take that in before you went into the next casino. After the flood though, so many of those hotels/casinos fought each other out and connected etcetera, and turn that whole area into what seemed like a great big casino Mall, mostly the silver legacy or things owned by the silver legacy (I hated it actually, and I hated that you could never go outside anymore before just walking quickly next door to the next casino. Since now it was all mostly enclosed indoors. It's a shame how things have to change, and it sure was great watching this video and being able to remember what it was like, and having so many great times down there.

ALL gone now. The only thing left are El Dorado and Silver Legacy and CircusCircus which are all just indoor malls which only perpetuates killing Downtown traffic. And all the motels that served the non-resort-hotel street casinos are all boarded up and/or fenced off or are struggling as single room occupancy residents serving what little indigent residents there are left in Reno.
