So you do NOT have to run the input ground all the way to the starter battery? - I was thinking I could just run a short ground to the frame vs a long cable up to the neg terminal on the starter battery…is that correct?

That's correct! Starter battery was already grounded to the frame. As long as your aux (house) battery is also grounded to the frame, I think that's okay (it has worked for me to this point)
