I lost someone very dear to me as a result of suicide and I wish everyday that I could have helped him with his struggle or at least told him it gets better. plz fight. it does get better. don't give up.

I feel this song perfectly describes someone going through an issue someone who has massive depression and is considering suicide someone in an abusive relationship someone who is being bullied someone with an eating disorder someone who had cancer someone who has AIDS or HIV It's just amazing how powerful this song can be dispite the fact it's only a repetition of words. Beautiful.

The inspiration for this song came from an actual Life Support-type meeting that Jonathan Larson attended with a friend. A guy was speaking about being afraid in connection with his illness, and he said (I'm paraphrasing) that he really wasn't afraid of the pain, or even death, he said that "The only thing that troubles me is 'will I lose my dignity'?" I read that somewhere before I saw this scene, and I was sobbing hysterically by the time Roger came in.

I suffer from depression, anxiety and multiple eating disorders. Much of this was brought on by losing my father back in 2013. He was the one person I really couldn't bear to lose. This song is one that I really feel connects to how I feel all the time as my remaining direct family can be very emotionally and verbally abusive. This song reminds me so much of him..

this one and life support are my favorites songs because even there shorter songs of the movie are the more profound and deep of all, because it is about a fight no only from aids like them, but for any kind we face. I always liked this song since I watched the movie a decade ago. Today I listened to it again after surviving a year of medical hardship and coming to terms with a lifelong condition that will slowly eat away at me. Though not as quick acting as what it was in the movie I know over the coming decades I will have to fight for every good day. If I stop moving or believing then the darkness comes for me and I deteriorate more quickly. So I understand. The integrity I once had and the respect and image I once held among my peers was shattered over a diagnoses that caused me to to become a husk drifting in and out of work and social circles. Today I live mostly as a hermit and lost all drive. This song made me smile. This whole movie does.

I was a new grad RN when I worked on the AIDS floor in San Francisco. I was losing at least 1 patient per night, sometimes 2 or 3. When I'd go home in the morning, I'd swear my car was on autopilot because I was always blinded by the tears I could only shed in the privacy of my own car. I lasted 8 months when I finally had to transfer out due to my heart breaking every single night. By that time I was taking care of friends, neighbors, acquaintances and coworkers. This movie and the hard hitting lyrics to these songs are like someone went into my heart and stole them. It will always be special. It was like Mr. Larsen was speaking directly to me.

Everyone else seems to be sharing their story so I guess I will too... I know it's definitely not as bad as some other people's but I really don't think it matters because it's still my struggle. I have OCD, anxiety and depression... it really sucks because it screws up my social life and it's just the worst feeling ever. I always have the feeling that nobody really cares about me and listens to me. I've always been the weird one. And it hurts a lot. I just wish I didn't feel like such an outcast. I just want to matter.

don't feel so alone. I believe that everyone has an invisible line connecting everyone in the word sometimes the like never ends. But you will make friends and you will be loved. you will feel special and you will feel happy trust me.

Miss Pudding I feel for you. I have anxiety, OCD, ADD, and depression. I hope things get better. I recommend seeing a therapist if you aren't already. I'm seeing a therapist and it's helping bit by bit. 💜

I got two out of three. lol Anxiety and Depression. I have anxiety more than anything, more precisely chronic paranoia, and it is pure torture. I'm working as hard as I can to conquer it, but I often find myself singing this song.

This song is exactly how I feel every sing day of my life. Horrible anxiety and depression. Detaching from emotion, and family problems. I ask myself this every single day... will I loose my dignity, will someone care, will I wake tomorrow from this nightmare

It is tragic how Jonathan Larson created this intensely generational moving masterpiece and devoted so many years of his life to it and never even got to see opening night of the Off Broadway because he died that the night before. mr. Larson you have touched more lives then anyone can imagine

I was born in 1988, so the horrors of the AIDS crisis were before my memory, but listening to this song in 2020, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, gives it a whole other depth. Nothing makes humanity confront its own physical, emotional, and psychological fragilities, for better and worse, like a hitherto-unknown disease. Stay safe and strong, everyone. Someone will and does care. Blessed be.

Every time I listen to this, it reminds me of everything I've been through. The depression, the heart breaks, the near death experiences, being FtM, having to come out, trying to fit in, losing those close to me, having friends call me late at night in a suicidal panic...

My theatre class did this on stage and we all had candles. The soloist came out alone. No lights on stage other than the candle. Then the guys joined in harmony, came on stage followed by the altos almost immediately after, all holding candles. Then the sopranos about halfway in. Then we stayed there for the rest of the song and at the end we all blew the candles out. It was so sad especially knowing what the song was about.

All these years later I still love how this song still resonates with people. Yes it was originally written with those who had AIDS but fast forward from then to now and it applies to so many things. Whether it's a dibilatating disease or a terminal illness, struggling with the aftermath of surviving abuse, and yes even those who struggle with their sexuality and gender. "Loss of Dignity" applies to more than the loss of bodily function and bodily control. Anyone who has any type of mental illness constantly asks themselves if they will wake from "this nightmare" as do any abuse survivors. And we all ask the question "will someone care?" Because deep down we all worry and fear, no matter how much we are told contrary to the belief, that no one cares. And that's why this song resonates with so many people.
