I can't believe they didn't go with this ending. This was absolutely perfect - it brings tears to my eyes. And I'm not just talking about Angel walking back on stage like that (which was also perfect). But it was just the nice nod to its theatre origins and a lovely tribute to this amazing cast.

Ben Waldburger I always kinda thought they should have had people who looked like the actors standing in the places here and in the opening then we go into Rent with the obc (ish) and close with the last No Day But Today as Anthony Rapp (Mark) sitting in the audience wearing like Collins’ cap, Roger’s jacket etc to show this whole thing was Mark’s production based on this experience (kinda like it was with Jonathan and his friends who were either HIV+ or had died from the disease)
@gingergoddess89535 жыл бұрын
They did it because they thought people would be confused into thinking it meant Angel came back to life like Mimi.
@Lina-zl1cc5 жыл бұрын
@Sunday Girl the thing is that yes it's a nice way to reflect on its theatrical origin and the obc, but a movie is not a stage production. They're totally different so you can't always use the same scenes because of the flow. Movies are more detailed, you sort of get transported into the story in a way that theatre doesn't. This ending would have twisted the flow of the movie and completely forgotten about Mark. This is technically Mark's story, he's the narrator. With the ending they went with, not only are they showcasing the characters and the obc, but they're also making us think about aids, life and its ups and downs, the group of people you surround yourself with, that there's no day but today while staying in Mark's pov (which shows his development). All that in the little film that he made. And ending with a shot of Angel is significant because it pays tribute to the people we've lost to aids (like the names of the people in the support group, they're names of people that Jonathan Larson knew and died to aids). And had they gone with this ending, I'm sure many people would have thought that Angel had not died

Let’s be honest, who here didn’t care that we had two gay couples as well as interracial couples, and this was the end of the 80s!! God this movie accepted diversity and it was awesome!!
@jdzspace333 жыл бұрын
just because modern media and social media likes to act that everything before 2016 was not diverse and everyone hated anything that wasn't all white or straight doesn't mean it was true. There are TONS of movies, shows, plays etc. with all kinds of diversity. That wasn't the only thing they brought to the table, and they didn't market the hell out of that fact like what we get today. I won't say stories like RENT were the norm, because it was and is special (at least imo) but not for it's diversity, for it's heart.
@RedDragonForce23 жыл бұрын

@@RedDragonForce2 - sorry, it just drives me up the wall the way modern culture treats diversity. It feels like in the past diversity was just a fact of life, but now it's mandatory even if it doesn't suit the story, setting, time period or what have you. I started watching this movie last night and finished it this afternoon (I've seen it before, but this is the first time I've actually paid close attention to the plot). This ending is beautiful and yes it does connect to the opening, and a part of me thinks it should've been kept in. Why? Because an interesting angle to go for would've been to make it seem like the characters were already dead, and that everything we saw in the movie was them reflecting on their lives, and then to end it with them exactly where the movie started, the auditorium (which is a metaphor for heaven). But I understand them not wanting to approach that, because it would've been too easy to make it seem like everyone died along with Angel.

Amazing song. I played bass guitar for this show recently (a local amateur theatre company) and was blown away by the music. I had never heard it before, apart from Seasons of Love. That Larson chap could write a tune! What a tragedy that he didn't live to get the acclaim (and the money) for this wonderful show. You know, some people in the band were saying "This doesn't seem to fit" or "Why is this bit in the show?" but my attitude is: leave it. It's not perfect (is anything?), but it's a little theatrical masterpiece.

The problem for me with the show/movie's treatment of Benny is that he isn't really. villain. He's sincerely trying to help his friends, he treats them more courteously than they treat him, he pays for Angel's funeral and what happens? His wife kicks him out and he's forgotten. So 'letting him' sing with the others at the end (or the quick shot of him in Mark's film in the ending they used) is less than the least that could have been done for him. Plus I think Taye Diggs' performance is very underrated.

In the commentary they remarked this ending would have cheapened angels death. Where in the play angel coming back is a relief, in a movie it would have been abrupt, even with the direct scene location. And I have to agree as much as I love angel. And the movie still ends with angel. Just on film instead.
@JustBob-sw4rf2 жыл бұрын
They were wrong. This is just a final farewell from all the performers. It doesn’t cheapen the death of the character in the live play for the performer who played Angel to come out and take a bow at the end. This ending to the movie is no different than that.
