Hey guys! I'm Alexandra Gater and I show you how to do rental-friendly upgrades and DIY projects on a budget. New videos every Saturday! Today is the final episode of My Rental Reno Season 3 and I am tackling the bathroom! I actually started this makeover back in the summer but it didn’t feel finished. So I’m taking a second pass at it by tiling over existing backsplash, hacking an Ikea storage cabinet and making a DIY towel ladder.

Amazing makeover as always…I would add a wooden butcher block style top to your white cabinet in the same vibe as the mirror trim and knobs . Also, like the black shower curtain rod but the silver shower head seems a little mismatched. Also, I kinda feel perhaps that there may be too many black accents and my eye just darts all over the space, just my opinion of course. Love your channel and personality…you are so real and not afraid to show it.

I would’ve left the chrome knobs on the cabinet doors I would’ve left the chrome shower rod and put up a hookless shower curtain I would’ve chosen a square or oval chrome mirror and I would’ve asked my landlord if I could swap out the single sink for a vanity that has more storage on top as well as underneath and I would’ve bought hooks for the back of my bathroom door to hang my towels on that I would use on a regular basis that way if my significant other isn’t that neat of an individual it’s very easy just to hang onto a hook. And I also would’ve asked my landlord if it would’ve been OK to swap out the tile on the floor with more of a modern style tile but these are just my thoughts and opinions love the makeovers that you do as always

I so agree! I was surprised when she didn't change the shower head and knobs to black to match everything else. Also, in the same vein as, "too many black accents," I was shocked when she brought in a black ladder- I thought for sure she would bring in raw wood to tie in all of the other wooden accents. I love your idea about the butcher block counter top for the storage units. Something kept throwing me off about that area, like it needs something to break up the white cabinets from the white walls. A wood top would be the perfect solution!

The two detaily bits that get me: how thick the back splash is now, but I guess it's useful since it's a little ledge... and also you had the power off to change out the sconces but didn't flip your outlet so it was right-side up.

This was so relatable. Sometimes it takes a while to have the courage to do the bigger things that a space needs. I've been living in my home for 2 1/2 years and we renovated the bathroom already because it was a real mess, but we have now saved enough money and know enough about what we need to redo the kitchen. And I'm glad we waited because I'm now very much into gold hardware, which I would never have thought of getting 2 years ago. 🙂 Love your bathroom design. The black accents are so chic, love the mirror and knobs. Simply adorable

What I love most about this makeover is all the black. The shower curtain is really fun. The original towel lander was too big so the new one is perfect. Beautiful makeover! I have to say I’m not a fan of cats because of allergies but your cats is so gorgeous!

Well done, Alexandra! I would sand the ladder back to natural wood if it was my bathroom, but otherwise love the makeover. The whole point of decor is that people do what they like, and everyone would do something differently if it was their own space.

You have a window with natural light, and put the rubber tree (that needs direct sun or at least direct light) in the corner away from the natural light. The peperomia (smaller green plant) can be away from the window a little. If you want your plants to live, put them where they get light. You also do not think of the humidity of the room. The bathroom often gets to 100% humidity, these plants can mold and rot if you are not careful.

I loved the new wood mirror. The balled frame tied back to the curtain tassels and cabinet legs. Round black looked comparatively cheap and would not have tied in all the elements as well. It would have looked like an amateur decorator - the ones who always go matchy matchy. And would have clashed with the long lines of the black faucet. So great call. I think the tassel hanging down on the cabinet was a vertical line in the center and “messed up” the composition. Love that you went with black on faucet and love rug and new Roman shade and vine placement. Your decorative items are always on point.

This was really great, my only call out is the backsplash. I was afraid that the thick tile would be bulky over the existing and it was and turned out uneven. Maybe update with a thinner tile?

Very cute makeover. My preference is the cabinet knobs would look better turned vertically, with the wood on the right. Personally I think the ladder and side table should be the same color wood as the mirror.

Love the effect that changing out the hardware had! I wonder what a wallpaper accent wall would look like behind the cabinets--either bold or subtly patterned. I feel like it could really tie the whole space together and give a focal point. 🤩

Many wonderful improvements! I would love to see you hire a inodor plant consultant. That pothos has been dying for more light----hence, the spread-out, sparse leaves. It wants to be cut back for thicker, fresh growth, a larger container, and a cleanup of dead leaves. It worries me that someone will slip on that rug with no rubberized bottom!

It's a beautiful makeover but I feel like the tiles look really messy and unprofessional. I would've painted them or totally replaced them idk. Also the round mirror fits better.

It’s a rental! Changing tiles, painting tiles would not be acceptable to the majority of owners. Change is limited to what is acceptable and allowed

I like that in these videos you'll keep in footage of you trying something and deciding later that it doesn't work, like the earlier roman shade attempt. It's realistic to what the design process is - not always going to get it 100% right the first time.

2 questions.. Where do you keep your products for the tub/shower? And tiling over the other tile, is that something you got approved by the homeowner or is that something you will remove? Doesn’t appear to me to be something that could be removed but maybe I am missing something. I find it helpful when you specify what is rental friendly vs permanent.

She said her land lord told her she could do the tile. He showed her how to do it. Also she has a huge cabinet of storage along the wall for products. And a stool next to the tub

The tile over tile is the only thing I was anxious about. I honestly don't like it much, it looks clunky, and I would have preferred keeping the original or removing it,which isn't as hard as you think, rather than tiling over. But, if the landlord is okay with it and Alexandra prefers it then more power to her. I don't live with it so it's not my opinion that matters. It's a much warmer and more pleasant bathroom now, too cold and clinical before.

As a plant mom have to say that your potos plant needs more light. I would trim it and turn it towards the window. You'll see how many new leaves will grow. The bathroom turned very cozy!

The second makeover was amazing! Loved all the black and natural tones. I think the mirror and the rug look great. The rug adds a little bit of a color pop, that you also bring out with the accessories. I wouldn't want it to be all black white and natural. Alexandra, you have such a good eye!!😍 PS I love the shower curtain with the pom poms and I don't think it looks too girly!

How about putting the plants on an elegant tray of cut glass or silver to match the other silver already there , plus keep water spills off the counter tops . I think the pulls would be very pretty with crystal pulls which match anything. Love your shower curtain and overhead light and stained glass in the window would be beautiful and give the entire room a fuse of colors as well , but you will do the best for your own space ...no doubt..Just a few examples that add charm. Love your show and your talent.

I saw patina kitchen and bathroom faucets. There is patina paint I believe. When the patina gets too dark there is a cleaner you apply and it takes it back to original patina look. Something to speak of.

things I need in the bathroom are a laundry basket and somewhere to put my clean clothes that I will wear after the shower or bath. I just wouldn't want the clothes on the floor in the meantime and also don't want to run all the way from my closet to the bathroom naked lol. I feel like the stool could be used for that. I know not everyone has that in their bathroom, I think it's so important to go with things that work for the people who use it with every space you tackle and you always do that

Loved most of the choices but I’m having a hard time with the light fixtures over the sink. I waited for the reveal thinking maybe they would fit when the whole room was pulled together but I just hate them so much lol. They look like eyes staring at you. But design is personal preference and they seem very Alexandra so if you love them….Anything with a round globe seems to be a theme across a lot of videos.

The black looks so great but,water scale builds up on the black than you start seeing white build up.So if you can, it's more work ,but just wipe the water off all the time .even the shower rode around the tub. Then it will not build up.Have fun ,it looks so good!!! 😏😊

It looks great, the only thing I would change is the shower head and handle. Leaving them silver doesn’t match the rest of the room.

Changing out those really high ceiling shower heads can be really tricky, and sometimes the faucet hardware on tubs turns into a nightmare too. I’d just hit them with some high quality paint meant to adhere to metal, much faster and easier. Otherwise that room looks fabulous!
