I know a little bit about Iceland's history. Apparently the monarchies in the Scandanavian countries were becoming more powerful, and the early settlers in Iceland were people who wanted to live in a republic. Iceland was also a stopping off point for people who went on to settle in Greenland and Newfoundland. The Vikings had settlements in Greenland and Newfoundland, but they eventually gave them up.
