Renting a car in Taiwan or taking public transportation, bus, train, taxi

This is my third visit to Taiwan and my second time renting a car here. A lot of people will say you don’t need to rent a car in Taiwan, I disagree, your range is greatly extended with a vehicle, and if you are in a group, you could even manage some savings. There are sights that can only be reached by vehicle. That said, you should be experienced diving in poorly lit night country roads over elevation, stay safe.
If you intend to stay solely in Taipei, and be close your hotel room, visit night markets, and hang out in shopping malls, then stick to the metro and bus services. If you intend to visit the mountains of Nantou, Hualien, Yilan farmlands, and Sun Moon Lake, and are considering the pros and cons or renting a vehicle, I hope this video helps you make the best decision.

Parking in Tai Chung and most of Taiwan is affordable, don’t park on red lines, don’t park blocking private property, if there is a free gantryless parking lot, a parking attendant will paste a parking slip on your windscreen, pay for this at any 7/11. I found that full day gantry based parking will cost 100 to 200 TWD. Some hotels offer free basement parking, others a special rate for full day single entry at 100 TWD. I chose not to drive in Taipei but the prices didn’t seem that bad so in retrospect I might next time I drop by here. Most of the places I stayed in, Sun Moon Lake, Yi Lan Country, Hualien, Tai Chung, Nantou, had free parking with the room.
