Good advice Muzz. After 30 years of riding throughout Bali, I have 2 sets of eyes in the back of my head and that’s still not enough. It’s a game of chess and you need to be 4 moves ahead

Take a photo of the number plate It’s the best way to recognise the same bike after you parked it somewhere Muzza You should also explain the petrol options. From a petrol station as known in AU or the vodka bottles at the shop vendors.

It is definitely different to ride in Bali as you said mate. Defensively slowly steadily but one thing I’d like to add when I rented my bike from KW TOURS they took photos of my international license and I showed them my insurance policy which they also took a photo of in case of something happens in case you are incapacitated to communicate KW TOURS have this sticker and phone number and logo on the bikes this is a Service. I find valuable please please please drive safe in Bali. I can see myself a safe rider and my last trip in Bali under low speed while going round the bend, I had a minor incident, damaging the foot peg on the bike. This is the nature of riding in Bali so once again ride safely and all else fails get some more tips from Muzza 😂

Hired a xmax from Ketut at KW Tour only last week great condition bikes and great for organizing any tours you may want to go on.

All excellent points muzza, I’ve just returned from a ride to Tulumban( north of Amed) it’s a 3 hr ride both ways , the roads are shocking in places, or that’s how they felt on the Scoopy I was riding. I found the concentration needed was intense to stay safe, literally anything can happen infront or behind you, check your mirrors constantly. Next trip I’ll go up through the middle from Sanur to beyond Kintamani. For a good deal on a terrific scooter I went with a lady who works from home, delivered the bike to my homestay and picked it up at end with baby in tow, great service & excellent bike + very good price.

The traffic rules are same or similar to Australia and any other countries in the main. The issue is the huge increases in vehicular traffic on poor and underdeveloped road structure. Single lanes even for arterial main roads is evident everywhere. So the natural thing to do is to take shortcuts, ride on pavements and head to any lane that has a break in traffic. All foreigners within 10 minutes of riding on Bali roads will follow the locals because it makes sense. Just have to be more cautious. One unexpected benefit of highly congested roads in Bali is the significant drop in speed, so high speed collisions are rare.Accidents are minor and usually involved only party falling off their bike after hitting a pothole. Thailand has better roads but unfortunately this results in locals and foreigners going over the speed limit and accidents are more serious.

Some sound advice, Muzza. Having lived in Java, I can only sum up their style of driving as assertive deference. The use of the horn is rarely used in anger, especially in the villages. Thanks for your input!

That beach is stunning Muzza.....and yeah I love Bali east coasta and inland areas.....AMED is a favorite Thanks Muzza.....motor bike is just not for me, way to hectic and stressful.

We love riding in Bali and we bring good quality helmets from home, they give us more protection then the helmets which come with a rented scooter.

Last year we had top-level travel insurance for Bali but would not cover riding a scooter. Did not know you needed an international license. Cheers from Oz

Muzza I don't know where you found such passive traffic. You should have done a run down the Sanua bypass start or around Canggu. Ride safe wear a helmet. Take a car if you can't ride. You'll never think again if you get it wrong(:-)

I always hire from Nichols Rent Bike at Bemo Corner. They charge $8.00 per day for a Honda Beat scooter - and their bikes are top quality. I find a small bike such as the Honda Beat is easier to manoeuvre through congested traffic than a Yamaha NMAX. I actually witnessed a crash two days ago outside of Warung Norman in Kuta. A young Balinese female was riding past some parked cars when a man opened a car door. She hit the door rather hard, but was walking okay soon afterwards. So a good idea to stay vigilant around parked cars.

Thanks muzz. I thought it was ok to just hire a scooter with an international car licence only. Insurance company won’t cover it. I’ll get my motorbike licence in Australia first even though I know how to ride a scooter competently.

What about the options to rent an electric scooter or a bike under 50cc . Thinking those would not require a license and should be enough to get around

Indonesia requires you to have a motor bike license (SimC) to ride any bike.

Question. Where I’m from you are legally allowed to drive a scooter with a normal drivers license. Would that count in Bali?

After experiencing Bali and Lombok recently I wouldn't even hire a CAR there!! It's absolute bedlam, extremely dangerous and I'm surprised that insurance companies are even allowing it.

Looks like the same road rules as driving in Saigon Basically forget everything you know about driving and follow what the locals do . Seems like they share the road a lot of give and take riding and 100% focussed on what’s in front of you . In Vietnam it’s actually the law you must toot the horn when you are overtaking seems like Bali is the same .It’s a good idea it uses all your senses to know what’s around you .

I had a young Aussie woman pull up next to me riding in a bikini and she said you don't need to wear a helmet, take it off its too hot. Said to her you obviously you don't have a license otherwise you would dress for the slide not the ride. Her reply was what do you mean, I said if you ride you would understand. Her riding style was clear she hadn't rode a bike before.

A young guy from Australia just got a mercy flight back home yesterday in a critical condition after a otor bike accident. He had no insurance & after a go fund me plee , his parents may vgery well lose there house!!. it has cost hundreds of thousand dollars!!.

I think I read the story yesterday of the mum trying to get her son back home…such a sad story…I was almost in tears…she had a Go Fund Me account to help for the hospital bill and the Medivac back home to Australia…
