REO stands for Ransom Eli Olds, founder of the Oldsmobile. The band was named after the REO Speed Wagon, an early truck from the REO Motor Car Company. As others stated, credit must be given to the great Gary Richrath.

If any of you guys are old enough to remember the Oldsmobile brand of car, REO was the initials of the founder of the Oldsmobile company (Ransom E. Olds). REO was a light truck company founded by the same dude, and the REO Speedwagon was a model of a light truck by the REO company from the early 20th century. I love old-school REO from the first Kevin Cronin album (REO TWO) from 1972 through this album. Great stuffl. Not as big a fan of their later stuff from the 1980s that was more pop. However from their huge 1980 album "High Infidelity" that sort of broke them through into the mainstream, I do love the last song that never got any airplay "Wish You Were There." Some other old school REO: Roll With the Changes (from this same album) Golden Country (a scathing political song, rare from REO) Being Kind Can Hurt Someone Sometimes.

In one poll, Gary is rated as the 2nd-most underrated guitarist of all time. (Mark Knopfler is #1.) Absolutely brilliant. Whereas Dave Amato is no more than adequate. I should also point out that the drummer you admire is co-founder Allen Gratzer; Bryan Hitt didn't join until 1987. The current lineup (Cronin/Doughty/Hall/Hitt/Amato) has been together since '89 and gets points for durability ("After 31 years in the group, Dave is still the new guy", as Kevin said last year), but the key lineup is from the 1970s, Cronin/Richrath/Doughty/Gratzer and first Gregg Philbin and then Hall on bass.

The current guitarist is filling in his shoes, and the whole band have benefited from Gary, and the resurgence of Classic Rock in tv shows and movies. Richrath was the Rocking powerhouse of the band. Ransom E. Olds (REO) could be considered the father of automotive claiming to have built the first automobile with a steam engine in 1894, then a gas powered one in 1896, this would credit Lansing, not Detroit, as the birth place of automotive. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/REO_Speed_Wagon

I'm sure you know by now and for the future that there can be no real discussion of REO Speedwagon without the late great guitarist Gary Richrath, whom - when he was in his prime - there were very few American guitarists who could touch him. That guy was an absolute madman on lead and rhythm guitar. I would even say he is probably the greatest Midwestern guitarist of all-time.

An REO Speedwagon was a heavy duty truck in the early 20th century that was also fast, relatively speaking for its time, often used as a fire truck. The band formed in 1967 in Champaign, IL. They have a lot of great tunes. They started off as hard rock and around the early 80's became more of a ballad/arena rock type of sounding band.

Ransom Eli Olds the founder of the REO motor company. Made a high power truck in 1911 that was the first high powered vehicle that could carry heavy loads called the Speedwagon. It was used a fire truck and other heavy duty jobs. The founder of the band Neal Doughty. (keyboardist) was taking a history of engineering class at the University of Illinois and was looking for a name for his newly formed band and the first day of class the instructor wrote REO SPEEDWAGON on the balckboard and Neal decided it was the perfect name for his band. The used Ramson Eli Olds intials and formed R.E.O Speedwagon. in 1968 the band still tours every year (except this year of course)

REO Speedwagon touring "You Can Tune A Piano But You Can't Tuna Fish" was my first concert. I had never heard of them prior to that concert. They spoiled me for any other concert I've been to after them. Kevin is the best front man I've ever seen. He had the audience in his hand with his high energy and the way he talked to the audience. The show was general admission so my friends and I made our way to the front of the stage. As high as I was I still remembered several of the songs, especially "Riding The Storm Out" and "157 Riverside Ave." Kevin fucked up his intro dialog on "157" by saying "Smoked some wine and drank a joint" (paraphrasing) He stopped bent over laughing and admitted to his fuck up as he laughed with the audience. BEST PARTY EVER!!!
